Weight loss after quitting wine

25mini7 · 08/05/2024 12:04

I've not had a drink for over two weeks. Decided to quit for my health and bank balance. I was having 4 bottles a week. I stupidly didn't weight myself 2 weeks ago but my clothes do feel looser. I've not changed my diet really but I'm certainly not snacking either in the evenings. My question is how much weight would I be loosing from not having the wine?

The average bottle apparently has 625 calories, so 625 x 4 is around a days calories for the average person. And if it's also 4 x snacks of 300 calories for example, then that's 1.5-2 days worth of over consumption of calories. So you could lose 1-2lbs a week I reckon just from the snacks and the wine, maybe more maybe less due to the very unscientific method I have used to make that estimate!

Bridgertonned · 08/05/2024 12:37

It's impossible to say, but there's a few factors and they're all positive -

  • avoiding the calories from the wine itself
  • less bloating
  • less likely to snack/over eat when drinking
  • less likely to crave high sugar/high fat foods the day after (eg due to poor sleep, not necessarily a full on hangover)

It can add up to a surprising amount! For me even one or two low calorie drinks leads me to eat more, so it isn't just the alcohol calories themselves.

25mini7 · 08/05/2024 12:56

I really feel so much brighter in myself. Not missing it

My friend and I did Dry January - so 31 days no wine and I didn't lose an ounce of weight, neither did she.

Slightly less bloating and improved sleep were my bonus' but absolutely zero weight loss. Gutted.

(I drank 3 - 4 bottles of wine a week)

Sandwichgen · 08/05/2024 12:58

I ditched alcohol for a few months years ago. I didn’t lose anything

Clearly wasn’t drinking g enough!

PersephonePomegranate23 · 08/05/2024 13:01

In all honesty, I've never lost anything from not drinking wine. When I do gain weight after a night on the wine, it's because I get snacky or feel tired/hungover the next day. If I drink but resist the snacks, there's never any difference - but that's just me, I might be odd!

Having said that, I don't drink much wine any more because it makes me feel very tired and more likely to reach for crisps or chocolate.

Revelatio · 08/05/2024 13:03

Me too! I actually put on weight! I find alcohol an appetite suppressant and when I quit I found my appetite increased and I craved chocolate which I usually don’t eat as don’t have a sweet tooth.

fiorentina · 08/05/2024 13:05

I’ve not lost weight from cutting out drinking alone, however I do snack less with no alcohol, and feel like more energetic exercise more frequently so it definitely helps overall.

WithASpider · 08/05/2024 13:07

I stopped drinking all alcohol for 50 days, didn't lose an ounce either! Fuming. I'd done it because i have other medical issues and wanted to see if it made a difference. It didn't.

Sleep was better and a bit less puffy but I didn't see any of the other benefits you're supposed to see after 3 weeks.

Wasn't worth it tbh.

NCfor24 · 10/05/2024 10:36

Same. I did dry January and didn't lose a thing.
I'm now calorie counting and using Mounjaro...having 1-2 glasses of Prosecco 4x a week but within my calories. I really don't understand why I didn't lost when I used to drink maybe 4-5 bottles of wine a week, but I'm also happy to see it isn't stopping me losing now although consumption is much reduced, I enjoy my evening drink!

Jennywren2000 · 10/05/2024 10:41

I didn’t lose anything, but was probably drinking less than you: used to drink 1-2 glasses of wine each evening and decided to stop.

I haven’t actually noticed any benefits myself, but I know most people do! Perhaps less bloating. It was all a bit of a non-event sadly!

I think for me, the wine actually lessened by desire to snack on sweet things in the evening, whereas some people snack more if they drink. Still, I have broken the habit so planning to keep drinking less.

All this. I haven't stopped drinking, just being mindful, and I was probably drinking 3 bottles worth a week....as in a couple of glass on 3 weeknights, share a bottle on Friday/Sat/Sunday.

I'm slimmer, I'm sleeping better, I'm not snacking anywhere near as much, I'm making my early morning gym class or walking before work, my face is less puffy.....it's all good.

That's amazing! May I ask how old you are @25? I'm in my 50's. I'm on my 3rd week alcohol free and I've not lost a thing.

25mini7 · 19/05/2024 09:16

I'm 48

I drink 1 to 1.5 bottles of wine a week over 3 days. It lessens my desire to have cake or chocolate. I cut it out for a few weeks and lost nothing. I am in my 50s.

user1471554720 · 19/05/2024 09:22

I add that I don't snack hardly at all when I have wine. I may have 4 dry cream crackers after my 2 or 3 glasses of wine.

25mini7 · 19/05/2024 09:23

I think I must have been snacking a fair bit! I do feel healthier and the sleep now is amazing

Jennywren2000 · 19/05/2024 09:24

That’s fantastic op, well done

TheFutureMrsWolowitz · 19/05/2024 09:28

I went on a 120 day challenge a few years ago and put on 2 stone.

This was, however, because I subconsciously thought it gave me a free pass to eat like crazy. I have binge-eating disorder and I just ate and ate and ate. I was eating full Big Mac meals as snacks before dinner.

When I decide to stop again I need to pay careful attention I think!

Hi
I tried this a year ago. I was drinking a bottle of wine a day, since lockdown, and thought the weight would drop off with 600 calories less a day - it didn't! I now understand the concept of calorie deficit. I was still exceeding the calories I needed every day through food so until I ate about 500 calories less than what I needed, I would never lose weight. Everyone's base calorie burn is different (based on weight, age, gender, activity level, etc) so it'd be worth checking your own online - I need 1400 or less to be in deficit to lose weight. But either way, kicking the booze has got to be a good thing so good luck!

Ottika · 04/06/2024 12:33

I think a lot of people use this excuse of not looking better or losing wight to GO BACK to drinking on here quite a bit.

I always lose weight when not drinking wine. I was fine with spirits in moderation but wine turned me into a stiff, bloated sausage - and after a good while like this, you just end up normalising it in the mirror Grin
It is very strongly targeted at women. Even a failing ice cream parlour in our town stuck up a prosecco sign in a desperate attempt to woo the mid-day mums. It's everywhere. It is marketed as 'healthy' (dubious!), French, sexy, classy, sophisticated....and it feels that way, for a while, until the long term heartburn sets in. lol.
