Is 1500 too much per day to lose weight.

Depends on your current weight, height, age and exercise levels

Lara96 · 30/04/2024 22:51

I put my details in to the calculators and my cutting calorie amount is coming up as 1582 but that still seems a lot to me.

Try it for a few weeks. If you lose weight its right. If not, knock 100 calories off and try that for a few weeks

I honestly wouldn’t bother calorie counting as it’s soul destroying and you’ll likely not keep it up in the long run.

Stop eating all crap. No chocolate, no cake, no crisps, no biscuits, no sugar in tea etc.

Eat pretty much as much as you want of anything else.

Snack on fruit.

Go for a 30 minute brisk walk every day.

The weight will fall off.

Google TTDE.

i lose slowly on 1200 calls per day. 1500 pd I’d gain (my BMI is 22)

PickAChew · 30/04/2024 22:57

No. Unless you burn less than that, then yes. That's unlikely unless you are small, old and sedentary, though.

daisydalrymple · 30/04/2024 22:57

How much are you currently eating per day? In old calorie counting advice. You need to cut 3,500 to lose a lb. So if you’re currently eating 2000 or above a day, then cutting to 1500 should see you start to lose weight steadily (a lb a week roughly).. When the weight loss slows, then you can think about cutting down if need be.

As pp says above though, you also need to take into account activity levels, weight, height etc

It concerns me that the competitive undereaters will swarm over this and persuade you that 1500 is too much. If it helps I lost about 16 lbs on 1800 calories a day before I had to reduce to 1500 calories. I was very overweight though and I was exercising so it’s a balancing act. I used the James Smith calculator and often lost more than a pound a week

Menora · 01/05/2024 07:11

I did start out on a lot more as I was a lot bigger, about 1900 a day then gradually reduced it as I lost weight so now it is about 1400/1500 as I am nearer to my final goal. I also used James smith calculator. Don’t use my fitness pal to work it out, and don’t try to lose 2lbs a week as that will be really tough going. Calorie counting is doable long term if you don’t go too low in my own experience. Also be really honest about your activity levels as that can catch you out.

I am 5’5 and I was 100kg now I am 72kg (aiming for 65kg) and haven’t eaten 1200 calories one single time. Less than 1500 would only be needed if you were very short. You would likely still lose weight on 1600 if the details are correct on the calculator you used

1500 is not too much. There's so much crao about 1200 calorie diets. If you've done a few calorie counter calculations and they're coming out pretty much the same, then it's usually suitable for your statistics. Try it for a month and see what happens!

Pickingmyselfup · 01/05/2024 17:28

Not necessarily no, its entirely personal. I'm 5'1 and pretty active, I lost weight on 1700 for a bit but I was a little bit overweight.

Couple of years on, weigh less, bit more active and I would probably struggle to lose eating 1700 because I weigh less and thus need less food to keep me alive in general.

I logged everything over a 6 week period and tracked my daily intake, it wasn't entirely accurate because I'm always eating a pinch of cheese here, a chip there but it was close enough.

Try it, if you go over, log it, log everything as close as possible for 6 weeks and weigh yourself weekly and you will see the trend.

GoldViper · 01/05/2024 17:37

I'm 5 foot 5 and weight 148 pounds. And am sedentary. (Work from home)

My tdee is 1584 so to lose weight I would need to only eat 1084 calories a day. Obviously I'm not going to do that so I'm eating 1300 per day which means I loose weight but not a pound a week. More like half a pound.

Mumblechum0 · 02/05/2024 14:01

That James Smith calculator is interesting, I'd like to lose a little more, just about half a stone, and it said 1226 cals per day to lose a little, which was what I said upthread.
As a pp said, there are so many variables, and someone who's doing loads of exercise is going to need a lot more.
