Hi all, I've recently been to the doctor to ask for help with my weight. I've been two stone overweight since I had my 3rd child 16 years ago. I'm a couple of years into peri-menopause now and have recently piled on another stone. I'm in a vicious circle. I can't run anymore because my knees hurt. My knees hurt because I'm overweight ( plus some small amount of inherited arthritis). My mild sleep apnoea is exacerbated by my increasing weight now which is making me tired. My cravings for fat and sugar are exacerbated by the fact that I am tired. My consumption of too much fat and sugar are making me pile on even more weight. Plus menopause. I need help to get me out of this spiral and down to a decent weight to help me get back to more exercise. Has anyone gone through their gp / weight management clinic to get a prescription for either of these drugs?

The thing is @LoveMyBengalCat it is possible to lose two stone. It’s not a huge amount to lose although it can feel like it I know. You don’t need a serious medication with side effects to lose two stone. And in fact you could just aim to lose half a stone. And then re-assess. You will feel better. You will notice the loss. And then you can aim for another half a stone.

These medications are aimed at people who have been obese long term.

I understand what you are saying @Peridot1 but my weight is growing rapidly now because I just can't stop eating and I feel it is unfair to wait many years and to stay overweight to be qualified for help. I was on a higher range of normal weight for last 20 years and I just reached overweight status and it triggered all fears that it will grow even more.

I know its hard @LoveMyBengalCat. Have you heard of the book Why We Eat (Too Much) by Andrew Jenkinson? It’s worth a read. It explains a lot about weight gain and loss and foods and how important WHAT we eat is. Cutting out ultra processed foods is really important. Avoid any foods labelled low fat or low calorie or low sugar. They are designed to be addictive.

@Peridot1 the problem is that almost everyone who is overweight knows that it can be done by overhauling diet. But they also know they are unable to do it themselves without help.

I am around 3 stone overweight and I've accepted that I just can't do it alone. I just do not have the willpower. I can't go a single day eating healthily, I feel constantly ravenous and then I'm a total cow to everyone around me.

I'm going to try Mounjaro (privately) because I feel like it's my last chance to feel better.

If it was as simple as overhauling your diet (basically the equivalent of saying "just stop eating") then there would be no fat people in the world

I didn’t even try getting it from my GP as he constantly sends me texts telling me not to contact the surgery as there’s no staff. I have been taking Mounjaro privately for six months and have lost four stone. I have more to go but it really is a game changer

Peridot1 · 07/05/2024 16:24

Oh trust me @Littlebitpsycho i do know. I really do. I had six stone to lose. I have lost three on Ozempic first and now Wegovy. But I do think it’s possible to lose two stone. I don’t think anyone with two stone to lose really needs these drugs. In my mind that is not long term obesity.

I got into a really bad headspace with diets etc. I had been trying and trying to lose weight for so long. I lost two stone quite a few times. But then the mountain I still had to climb to lose the rest seemed insurmountable. But I could lose two stone.

One of the reasons I recommend the Andrew Jenkinson book is that when I read it I stopped blaming myself for lack of willpower and just being rubbish and greedy and a failure. I did become very angry at the diet industry!

I know it’s not easy. I really do.

I have BMI over 40 and other health issues and have had to obtain meds privately. NHS services for obesity are rotten

I do agree with this. I’ve really been helped by Mounjaro- BMI below 30 and about 20% of weight loss already. I have to think that the NHS would save money in the long term given that these meds are so effective and have cost me about £120 or so a month retail.
