Want to lose weight but scared to fail.

This is so weird. I desperately want to lose and I need too but I do it for a bit then slip back. It's like there's something psychologically blocking me? Also it's like being overweight is part of my identity somehow? I'm scared to fail and don't feel I deserve to look after myself?
It's all very strange and mixed up in my head.

Are you afraid of success? Are there things you will need to face when you’re no longer overweight?

Emilymaitlisdog · 22/04/2024 10:45

I really don't know. I really don't understand it.
I know exactly what I need to do and how to lose weight but my head is just saying nah, not that bothered. Even though 2 weeks ago my head was very bothered and focused on losing weight.

Maybe it would help to stop thinking in terms of weight loss?
I think alot of us fall into the trap of thinking we have to change our diet for a set length of time then can go back to 'normal' when we have lost the weight.
Obviously it all ends up coming back!

You could try just developing one or two healthier habits around food. More fruit and veg or weighing out portion sizes.
Just remember it can take over 3 months for something to become a habit and weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint!

I found it much easier to reframe it as focusing on getting fitter. Which also includes a healthier diet and exercise but my mind is on getting stronger and I don’t weigh myself. This seems to be working for me when before I was very much like you describe. Even though I know it’s the same process and end result! The mind is a funny thing!

Emilymaitlisdog · 22/04/2024 13:38

It's almost like my brain has shutdown on eating healthily/getting fit, anything like that.
Like I'm just absolutely exhausted with the whole thing.

How are you trying to lose weight? Maybe it is boring and unachievable?

Stuffing my face with chocolate, even though I look in the mirror and am horrified. What's wrong with me??

If I was to stay on the wagon I would be a size 10 by now (size 20 currently). But just couldnt stay on it for long enough. Ups and downs constantly. I took a leap and started on Mounjaro. It is really helping to block out thr 'food noise'. You dont think about food constantly.
Its really making a difference. Would you consider something like that

I get u OP. Problem is OP whe u are trying to lose weight I find u are always thinking about food. I lost 10stone with Weight watchers about 10 years ago. Unfortunately due to bereavement I have gained 5 back. I annoyed but have decided to have another ho. I'm.with WW again. It not difficult to follow. U will be surprised what you can eat. New start. Just have a go. Can recommend it.

We have a thread further down called "I want a different me! Do you?" It's just a few of us trying to make small steps towards self care
Very non judgemental. Do join us.

Personally I find I'm a procrastinator for many things which might improve my life. They all seem too hard to do shorterm for the long-term results.

So I've reframed it to short term goals ..like very small wins. I started just with no eating between meals. Pretty hard for me. I've managed about 9 days. It's now a lot easier.

It's been enjoyable in the sense food tastes absolutely delicious now when I do eat.

I need to lose about 15 kg. But first I need to lose just another 2kg. And the next 2kg is next week's problem ifyswim. And so forth.

I'm seeing a link with housework. I find it difficult to start because it seems impossible, the mountain. So I'm just doing little bits of the "extra stuff" and it's better than nothing...and next week is easier than last week because you build on the hard foundation of last week's efforts

And just to point out, maybe you are exhausted for a reason...like thyroid or Vit D deficiency or iron or B vits or not enough sleep or stress. Tackle those things first if you suspect any thing. Vit D deficiency makes you crave calories as the body stores vit D in fat cells, and the less you have the harder it tries to hang on.

Nettleskeins · 28/04/2024 17:27

Magnesium cravings can be chocolate cravings too!!
