I'll start losing weight 'tomorrow'

I'm so so tired of my eating mindset and I wonder if anyone has successfully broken through and lost weight?

I'm short, in the 15s and I love cooking and good food (always have done). Each week I start with loads of optimism and then by Friday I'm tired, cranky, want to cook up a storm, drink some wine and relax, with the mantra 'I'll start again tomorrow/monday'. All that means of course is that I never actually get anywhere. Any losses of the week are erased by the treats of the weekend.

You'd think it'd be easy to say 'just stick with it' but in practice, it's not that easy at all.

Got on the scales this morning and I've done it again and I'm so fed up with myself! Wonder if anyone has managed to conquer this? What are your top tips and how have you managed to change this mindset?

I have to exercise to lose weight. For me it is aqua and swimming but walking or a YouTube class may work better for you.

Me to @Mathsbabe People love to be so sure that it’s all down to diet and you can’t outrun a bad diet, but that’s just not true in my case. I cannot lose weight if I’m not exercising HARD.

I think it's easy to say 'oh I've messed up for today, I'll start again tomorrow / Monday' ... But it's another excuse, you can start again any time. You can start again at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on a Thursday if you want to. If you fall off the wagon, just mark it and move on.

(I'm not lecturing, I am also telling myself this 😁).

Oh that's interesting. I have a VR headset and I really enjoy playing tennis and doing these walking challenges where you're exploring different worlds etc. It's usually a good workout but I've always thought that losing weight is more about what you eat. Maybe I need to get more consistent with the exercise in order to shift my thinking!

Knowing how many calories my body actually needed was an eye opener for me. I thought 2000 calories was written in stone - it isnt, its all weight and height dependent

Right now , at my weight and height I need only 1300 to maintain, which when you like food , isnt a lot. So Ive had to up my exercise so I can get by on 1300 cals - but still lose weight. Its 3000 calories per 1lb of fat so I have to have a calorie deficit of 3000 calories a week to loose just 1lb. That keeps me focussed , that keeps me on track

Whats really working for me regarding the "Ill start again tomorrow" mindset, is keeping to "Ill start again right now". So if I do go a bit off track ( last night case in point, couldn't have stopped me reaching for bread and biscuits ) today Im back on plan, I have my healthy meals planned and ready to go. Yes I had biscuits and bread last night - possibly a couple of thousand calories worth, but I cant change that, its happened, all I can do is change what I eat today

And its great that you do like to cook, cooking from scratch is the best weapon in weight loss as you have complete control over whats going in. Ive made changes, we still eat the same old, but its how I cook thats changed. Air fryer roasties and chips - practically fat free if hand cut, softening onions down in water rather then oil and butter when making a curry, blitzing softened veg as the thickener for stews and gravy instead of flour ,basically just tweaking recipes to remove fats and oils without removing taste and shaving off the calories
