The weight is seemingly falling off me. Great. But should I be worried ?

49 years old. Never really dieted before/made the effort to the extent I am currently. Not specifically counting calories:

Dinner/lunch is mostly chicken breast with veg/salad or veg stir fry.
Minimal carbs. Think pasta once every 2 weeks. No bread.
No cakes, crisps, ice cream what so ever
Occasional fun size choc bar
Significantly reduced alcohol
Running 50-60 mins several times a week. This is around 6-8k & 500-650 cals
Some swimming (breast stroke), usually around 40-50 lengths of an olympic size pool.

This weekend I had a curry takeway fri night (poppadums,, chicken tikka (starter size), no rice, spinach side) with a bottle white wine. Sat night was home made tacos (mince/low fat sour cream, minimal cheese & the taco shells. I had about 5 of these), 3 large glasses of wine. Nothing else in the day. Sunday was home made chicken salad and a biscuit. I ran 6k/500 cals and swam 30 lengths. I was fully prepared to have put on today after the wine/curry/tacos. Instead I have lost another pound. This is great but I am beginning to worry something is amiss.

I've recently had full bloods for something that was suspicious. Bloods were all clear.

SW 12stone 10lbs (Jan 31st)
CW 11 stone 9lbs
GW 10 stone 7 lbs

I have never lost weight to this extent but am doing quite a bit of running (gym).

the weight continues to fall off me. As an example: I'd not been to the gym for around 2 weeks. I had a weekend of lots of wine drinking. Not really eating dinners as such, I'm picking at foods (mainly meat for protein). We went out for a curry, I had chicken tikka & tandoori chicken i.e. meat no sauce. Had a day of eating a fair amount of chocolate (and some meat). Still no crisps/cake/mcds/bread/ready meals/sweets/cheese/ice cream/biscuits/fizz

Monday this week I weighed in at 11st 10lbs. I had put on 2lbs, I then had the chocolate day I've since ran a 6k and collectively done around an hour and a half of sit ups. No real dinners, still picking at meats. Today (thursday) I weighed in at 11st 7lbs. That's 3lbs off in 3 days, despite the chocolate day, all the wine at the weekend and 3 fun size mars bars eaten at midnight last night.

I've recently had to be medically checked, think I mentioned this up thread. Bloods are all fine, all levels are in the middle of each scale. Blood pressure is really good as is beats per minute. Dr even asked if I am an athlete.

You seem to want to find a problem.

If you are only picking at food and not eating much you will lose weight.

However before you go rushing to the GP, track your actual calories for a week and then decide.

Is it worth buying a few smaller bottles so if you get the urge to have a drink you can have 1 without feeling like you may as well have another, and then have to finish the bottle before it goes off (which is my thinking!)
Or switch to something else like g and t or rum and Coke where you can control the measures?
Nothing wrong with having a drink on the weekend but a whole bottle of wine is a lot

OP was asking advice about weight loss not asking for opinions on drinking a bottle of wine !

Also you are likely to be in ketosis if you are not having any carbs - when you go into ketosis you can lose a few lbs in glycogen. If you have only been picking at meat and having a few carbs the 3lbs could easily be you have gone into ketosis over the last couple of days.

That weight loss sounds commensurate to your diet, exercise and timescale. Are there any other symptoms worrying you?

soupfiend · 28/03/2024 14:10

Its not particularly fast but isnt slow either and will slow down in any case, good on you OP

I wouldn't be worried, 1 stone weight loss over 2 months is within normal - no more than 2 pounds a week is recommended. As you're doing so much exercise and eating in a deficit it's clearly working for you! I think the body does strange things when losing weight and I definitely remember some mornings pre weighing myself, thinking I'll definitely have put a pound or two back on, but then I'd lost again. All depends on sleep, hydration, salt levels etc as well. As a random aside, I was exactly your start weight and achieved your goal weight in 6 months. I did similar to you in terms of diet and exercise, and now maintain. Well done!

I always face this issue when I've been losing weight on purpose - what to do when I want to stop. I have never gone the calorie calculation route, I've always gone the eat a bit more and then weigh myself (weekly) for two or three weeks; if the weight is still going down I add a bit more, if it's steady all good, if it's been going up I cut down again. Just adjusting til I'm more or less stable.

So in your place I'd add a couple of hundred nutritious calories every day. Handful of mixed nuts or a banana mid afternoon. Marmite toastie at breakfast. Small additions that give you a nutritional bang for your calorie buck.

You can also bring back some fun things like a glass of wine or some chocolate but I do also think that drinking so much at the weekend is stressful way to add calories to your diet. It's giving you a huge spike of empty calories all at once and it's not really helping you to stay healthy or keep your weight stable.
