Tummy size not going down

I’ve recently lost a stone - 5”10 11st10. I know that’s by no means tiny, but normally when I am at this size my tummy is substantially smaller. At the moment it doesn’t look like it’s changed much at all! And I’m doing reformer Pilates twice a week plus running/weights class so more than I usually would. I’m 51, is this the dreaded perimenopausal thickening of the middle?!

Mine was the last thing to go when I started losing weight late 40’s. I had to get to the lower end of my BMI but it finally went.

Oh that’s not good news. I’ll never get to lower bmi 😥

Mid fifties, got a tummy for the first time in my life. It will not go!

Andrasa · 03/03/2024 09:30

i lost from bmi 29 to (currently) bmi 21.5, and my middle barely changed until I got below about 22.5. Thankfully it is finally looking miles better now and it seems like any weight I lose now = loss in stomach.

Keep doing the pilates, pehaps add in 10 mins a day at home too? and keep running a small calorie deficit. You'll get there!

I am 49, have 7llbs left to lose and it's pretty much all visceral and tummy. I'm really worried I'll lose my bum and boobs in the process but this belly fat has to go!

I'm carrying on with yoga, pilates and dancing in the kitchen when no one's around. I know everyone says you can't exercise off belly fat but surely if you have strong muscles all around your waist it becomes more defined and they'll be drawing their energy from the surrounding unnecessary fat? That's what I like to think anyway - it keeps me going!

The amount of bread I eat makes the biggest difference with my tummy.

My experience echoed that of @Andrasa, I had to get to the lower end of the BMI normal range.

I read something in the Telegraph about this - tummy and menopause. But basically chew your food properly, put knife and fork down and eat slowly. Then it's diet Eat lots of veg, saurkraut, yoghurt, v little alcohol, no 'white' carbs....

I lost my tummy at bmi 19.5 but sadly my boobs went first. Now bmi 19 and most remaining fat is on my thighs.
