I just binged on a lot of food after a couple of months of strict dieting I feel so guilty

I’ve been dieting now a couple of months and lost over a stone I don’t know what happened but I was really hungry this morning so instead of having a protein shake for breakfast like I have been doing I instead ate 6 chicken nuggets then I cooked dinner but I didn’t pay attention to the time And when I realized it was ready at 1pm I panicked thinking I was going to be hungry later I made 500g of pasta and ate half of it in one go along with chicken and the sauce usually I’ll have a protein shake in the morning, then if I get hungry I’ll have some fruit then my dinner then if I get hungry in the evening I’ll have more fruit or some brown toast and jam now I feel like I’ve messed everything up I feel terrible

One unpopped kernel in a bag of popcorn doesn't ruin the popcorn! Just like on day of making decisions you look back on and don't think were your best efforts doesn't remove all of the decisions you've successfully made for the last few months to lose weight. Congratulations on your over a stone loss! That's fantastic!

Tomorrow is a totally new day you can approach in a different way 😊

Menomeno · 27/02/2024 15:51

It happens. Write it off as a bad day and get back on the horse! It won’t do any harm to have a blow out once in a while.

SallyWD · 27/02/2024 15:55

I find that whenever I'm dieting I'll have a day (maybe one day every couple of weeks) where I can't stop eating. I think it's because I'm feeling quite deprived and by body doesn't like me dieting - the occasional binge is my body's way of trying to get some more nutrients and calories in to me!
It's fine. It won't make much difference, believe me.

CaraMiaMonCher · 27/02/2024 15:55

It was actually inevitable after such strict restriction for so long. Read about the binge:restrict cycle.

The guilt and negativity are pointless emotions though, they certainly don’t help anything!

You wouldn’t crash a train for a leaf on the line, you’d just deal with it and carry on the journey, so that’s what you should do, but maybe you need to build a bit more flex into your eating plan to allow for the days where you’re more hungry than others. It’s okay to eat pasta, you have your body what it asked for, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Sedgwick · 27/02/2024 15:56

Don’t feel bad. We’ve all done it. Just forgive yourself and move on.

oneboy3girls · 27/02/2024 16:00

It doesn't seem that much anyway.

SquirrelsAssemble · 27/02/2024 16:13

It's okay!

Maybe look at this morning's wobble as an opportunity to learn about how your body reacts to stuff & plan better for next time.

Maybe its a message that you're getting bored of the current routine & you can plan some new, high protein, healthy breakfasts which will sustain you better than a shake?

Maybe its your hormone cycles and you can expect them & forward plan in future?

Definitely don't feel guilty for eating when you were hungry.

Tomorrow is a new day and all that x that was me on Saturday just past.

DarkDarkNight · 27/02/2024 16:28

That isn’t as bad as I thought. You won’t ruin a diet with a couple of slips. Try not to beat yourself up, just start again.

As a side note, it seems very restrictive. I’m calorie counting and at the moment (touch wood) it’s going well. I couldn’t stick to what you are eating, you can have protein to feel satisfied without Needing to drink shakes. I’m not an expert at all but you need to be able to stick at it.

Lollibert · 27/02/2024 18:49

@DarkDarkNight 56g of pasta is the recommended portion for one person I ate 250g in one sitting with toppings I was scared that I would be really hungry after with it being 1pm instead of doing the sensible thing and waiting until a more appropriate time to have dinner I decided I’d have a really big portion to fill myself up for the day I wasn’t thinking right at the time but afterwards was when I felt extremely terrible and I still do I don’t even want to know how many calories my food was

ApolloandDaphne · 27/02/2024 18:52

56g seems a very precise amount. I use 75g per person and that seems tiny.

Loopytiles · 27/02/2024 18:54

Restriction can be a trigger for this.

DarkDarkNight · 27/02/2024 19:00

@Lollibert if you are only eating one meal a day and the only other food you are having is a protein shake and some fruit then maybe more fruit or some toast I think it’s understandable you would binge. It’s not a sustainable diet.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. It is a blip. There is nothing you can do now about what you have eaten, just move forward.

I was eating terribly before I started calorie counting. If I go over one day I think that it’s probably still less calories than when my diet was really bad. A day or so over calories will still probably be a deficit over the week if I stick to my goal on the other days.

Menora · 27/02/2024 21:30

I think as others have said your diet isn’t working as it’s not enough food. I don’t know how you are managing on such a strict diet. There are better ways to eat and manage hunger including eating proper meals. It’s not surprising you ended up eating carbs if you are living on fruit and protein shakes for months! Tomorrow is another day but perhaps this can be time for some readjustments?

Lollibert · 28/02/2024 12:33

@Menora it does the meal I do eat I have everything I need i feel satisfied the other day I was thinking I couldn’t believe how little cravings I. Was having and I thought I was getting to a point where I didn’t care about food anymore well proved myself wrong yesterday with the amount I ate after doing so well for so long

@Lollibert having read one of your other threads I think the best thing for you to do is address your disordered eating. Diet pills are not good and neither is this way of eating. It's not going to work either. Please see your GP or if you can afford it seek private therapy Flowers
