is 'more protein' just the latest new fad?

Like no carbs or intermittent fasting....

I don't mind eating more protein but I don't want to go the protein shake route.

But who actually needs 130?

I really don’t find this. Protein doesn’t seem to fill me like carbs do. I’ve tried so often as well.

I found this too. Never been hungrier than when I tried low carb high protein!

OP yes, it’s a fad. Easy way to sell people ‘protein enhanced’ products. Most people get more than enough protein. Getting too much will give you kidney stones.

I've been eating full fat greek yoghurt after being advised it's high protein - then I checked the percentages and its actually much higher fat than protein which only seems to be the normal for any yoghurt! There are SO many things that you 'should' and 'shouldn't' eat these days - am I the only one totally confused?

Try Arla Skyr. 100g contains 63kcal and 10.6g of protein. I could get my daily 60g of protein from 600kcal if that’s all I ate, which I wouldn’t.

On the Tier3 NHS weight loss programme I was told to aim for 1200kcal and 60g of protein each day.

My 200 kcal breakfast is usually 150g of Skyr, plus 5g of flaked almonds for texture which adds 62 kcal and 2.5 of protein. I like eating but that sustains me for a few hours until my 400kcal lunch.

Icedoatlattelove · 27/02/2024 17:56

I had bariatric surgery via the nhs a few years ago now. They advise all post op patients to eat high protein and pretty low fat. So not like atkins. This is so when you initially lose weight you maintain muscle mass. But also it keeps you full for longer.

I can eat everything now so I do have periods like on holiday when I don't eat high protein. I do notice I'm hungrier. For me it's a balance though, protein helps keep me full but I eat high protein a lot of the time so I can not at other times. I'm a vegetarian / semi vegan too so I have to really make an effort to get my protein in.

AmaryllisChorus · 27/02/2024 18:04

I think it's possible to have a higher protein diet without any need for ultra-processed shit.

Protein certainly fills you up for longer than carbs and prevents blood sugar spikes and cravings.

It doesn't have to be high fat. Instead of Greek yoghurt go for Skyr Icelandic yoghurt. Lean chicken or beef, venison, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, reduced fat cheddar if you have low fat tolerance, tofu and edamame, pulses and beans if you are not carb-free, small amounts of nuts. No need for any protein shakes and Arla pots (except natural Skyr) unless you actively want them.

I do. Well slightly more than that.

If you needed 130g protein a day, could you achieve that from diet alone? 50g a day is easy from just food.

Edited

Absolutely no idea as I personally dont need that much protein and most normally active/fairly active middle aged women dont

50gr is enough for me. I dont get hungry, I dont snack, Im losing weight

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/02/2024 21:03

Skyr tastes horrible though.

Justbeenfined · 27/02/2024 21:11

Not sure Arla are that great a company ethically either tbh

samthebordercollie · 27/02/2024 21:13

@suki1964
In fact the older you get the more protein you need to help build and maintain muscle mass. If you have good skeletal muscle you are far less likely to likely to die as a result of a fall. Of course being active (with weight bearing exercise, swimming and cycling don't count as they aren't) helps and resistance training is best but a high protein diet also contributes to your body's muscle mass.

Which is why I aim for 50gr, which is a lot of my calories for the day - up too 1300 a day

Previous to "upping my protein" I was on a carb heavy diet, rarely ate any protein at all, a couple of thin slices of meat , 3oz of steak, a serving spoon of minced beef and of course it wasnt enough

I still eat little meat, Im not too fussed on it, but now add eggs and fish and of course I do eat things like chickpeas and lentils pretty regularly . I make my own fat free thick as in seriously thick, roll off the muslin thick yoghurt. No idea of the protein content, its just plain skimmed milk. Its greek yoghurt in all but name, much thicker then Fage and I eat that every day. Much more digestible to me then milk as the lactose is thrown out with the whey. Three tablespoons of that with berries and 20gr of oat bran keeps me going till my evening meal. My understanding is that the long strain time ( I strain overnight ) concentrates the protein . Its also low in sugar and still high in calcium. It works for me. I really dont need to up my protein to 130gr a day for sure

Isn't it funny how they recommend that after they've given surgery but they won't recommend it to obese and diabetic patients beforehand.

That wasn't my point. You were quite dismissive of protein supplements and preferring to eat your calories like it was the easiest thing in the world. I was asking what you would do if you needed more. Would you be dismissive of protein shakes then?

As it stands I couldn't cope on 1300 calories. I'm on nearly 2000 and do weightlifting so we live pretty different lives. I couldn't physically eat that many calories though with just food and meet my protein needs, so protein shakes have their place. My focus isn't weight loss either. You don't fear numbers on the scales when you do the weights thing.

I do dislike the big gimmicky thing going on but when you've been doing it a while you can sift through the crap and the big cons. Your average person will just see protein on the label and think it's a good choice. Not all protein powders are created equal either. Some of the crap out there does my head in.

suki1964 · 28/02/2024 01:34

@gamerchick I never ever wrote the post to sound dismissive, I only ever write from my own experiences

Because I am on quite low calories, for weight loss, for me the aim is not to go hungry , so I make my calories count and work for me . No where have I been dismissive of other peoples choices, I just clearly stated I dont take them as I want to eat my calories

However if you read something different ????

Just eat normally, eat fats - so butter, full fat yogurt, milk etc protein, veggies, some carbs complex are better because simple carns bc are basically sugar, everything in moderation. Avoid sugar, sugar is the bad guy, even though fat has been vilified for years, that's not the truth of the matter.

This is what I’m doing….have to say I agree.

it all goes in circles.
protein has never been as controversial as fat or carbs, just the recommended amount.

current trend seems to be low fat, high protein, high complex carbs (inulin, fibre).

greenacrylicpaint · 28/02/2024 07:46

eat food
not too much
mostly plants

I've lost 80lbs in 7 months eating high protein, low carb. It fills me up, it stops my blood sugar spiking and it protects me from muscle mass loss. All good things.

I’ve kept 5 stone off for 3 years doing the same.

no shakes or supplements for me, and I’m not ever massively hungry like I used to be. Am never “starving” like I used to feel. im sugar free too.

LondonLovie · 28/02/2024 07:53

Grass fed, beef broth protein powder after a weights / strength session, is amazing. Full of amino acids.

Predictabilitypreferred · 28/02/2024 07:57

High protein diets long term will damage your kidneys. I wish people would stop with all these fads. A healthy balanced diet with all the food groups is what we should be eating.

Bearpawk · 28/02/2024 08:02

Lower fat higher carb was definitely en vogue in the 80s-90s.
The thing is, medical research develops over time so there is evidence to back up the benefits of protein. There will always be evangelists about everything though - just be sensible I say

Yes, please quote your sources. If you read any studies from current experts on protein such as Dr Stu Phillips, Dr Alan Aragon or Dr Brad Schoenfeld you will see that this old theory of protein harming kidneys has been debunked.
