Anyone else taking Semiglutide? Is it working for you?

Hi I’ve got diabetes but also I’m obese. I’m taking meds for the diabetes and in January my gp prescribed me Semiglutide alongside in the hopes that it would help me lose weight. However it’s done absolutely nothing! And if anything my appetite has increased! And I’ve put weight on! I’m so upset, I’ve arranged a drs phone appointment but that’s not for another 4 weeks! This time last year I was eating one meal per day but of course I can’t do that now and also I’m on a weight management programme with the hospital who are stressing how important it is to have 3 healthy meals per day. Sorry for the essay. But it was so much easier when I didn’t eat at all. Is anyone else having great results with it?

How many weeks have you been in it and what dose?

Ladybird69 · 20/02/2024 00:02

5 weeks and the dosage is 3mg tablet in the morning

A couple of thoughts:

Most people who use it for weightloss have injections. I don’t have experience of the tablets but a quick search suggests they should have the same effects.

people who take it for weight loss often ramp up the dose over time. Will your dose increase or will it stay the same?

No weightloss happens unless you change what you eat and eat less than you burn. It’s perfectly possible to stay the same weight on semaglutide if you don’t change your habits.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 20/02/2024 07:40

I think that 3mg is the maximum dose?

soupfiend · 20/02/2024 07:42

My OH is on it for diabetes, he has an injection, he has found its really reduced his appetite although I wouldnt say he has lost a huge amount of weight.

Guttedme · 20/02/2024 12:35

I have heard of this, I want to say I think it has something to do with mindset and it being the right time.

I tried the Rybelsus oral pills very briefly back in 2021 and they did nothing for me but at that time I'm not sure I was wholly there in mind to want to lose weight. I got to the same stage when I had Victoza (liragultide) at a consistent dose of 1.2mg from the gp. Now I'm on 4.5mg of Trulicity weekly until that runs out in a couple of weeks, then if keeping up all the exercise I shall see.

Sometimes it has blown my mind when you compare the daily injection to the weekly. I do think there is a difference between the medication which is licensed purely for weight loss.

Yes I see people have lost 10 stone in quick time, but I've found it a long process, up and down for a third of that.

gingercat02 · 20/02/2024 12:53

Rybelsus comes in 7mg and 14mg doses, too. Do you take it properly, on an empty stomach with no more than 100mls water and 30 mins before other food or drinks?

Thanks for all your replies
@Imitationzone i am on the lowest dose and the Gp did say that he was hoping to have tirzepatide but he can’t get hold of any so has given me the Semi instead. I have completely changed my diet in the past 6 months due to the diabetes diagnosis. I dropped 2 stone practically over night and then have stuck. Before starting the tablet I was never hungry or craving food but I am now.
@Itscatsallthewaydown i don’t know if they have any higher dose, I’ll have to wait until I speak to the Gp
@soupfiend thats interesting that your husband has it in injection form I wasn’t offered that. Tbh I do have lots of weight to lose , so thought and hoped that the weight would fall off!
@Guttedme it gets to me when I see all the celebrities going from a size 6 to a size 0! When using the meds. And I need it more. I struggled to eat one meal a day before my diagnosis and now I’m eating 3 meals and could easily eat more
@gingercat02 hmmmm that is really interesting. My Gp explained how to take it but he told me to take it with a pint of water, not just 100mls! Then an hour later I take Empagliflozin with another pint of water and then an hour later i take my first dose of metformin with some fruit for my breakfast. Then I take my second dose of metformin with my evening meal. I have got a phone appointment booked for the second week of March but I think I need to try and get a message to him to check that I’m taking it correctly.

Don't focus too much on your weight, it's your blood sugars that count. What was your last hba1c?

I'm on Metformin (1g a day) and find I can't eat any form of starchy carbs even if the wholegrain/wholemeal versions. NHS guidance on type 2 diabetes is horribly outdated, and I've found better results using following the low carb program online - it was about £70 for a year and you get a weekly coaching program, recipes, community board etc. Eating once a day isn't good for keeping your blood sugars stable at all, I need to eat every 4 hours.

Ladybird69 · 22/02/2024 20:41

@Wizzadorra70 I was first diagnosed last April with levels of 122! Through diet and metformin I’ve managed to get it down to 60 and due a blood test next week. I struggle but force myself to eat 3 meals a day! But since starting the Semaglutide I have a ferocious appetite! I have decided I need to speak to my Gp and let him know what has changed. I’m lucky that my Gp is the county’s top diabetes dr but alongside that is the fact that I have to wait to speak with him as he’s in such demand.

Sounds like you’re on Rybelsus. You mustn’t take more than a big sip of water with it and then nothing else to eat or drink for 60 mins after ideally.

3mg is the starting dose you won’t notice a difference on that but you should move up now to 7mg or 14mg. It takes 6 weeks to get fully in your system but also you need to move to the higher dose after month 1.

Sunshineandrainbow · 30/03/2024 11:31

I cant decide between this and wegovy. Can anyone help?

Titwillow55 · 03/04/2024 08:11

@Sunshineandrainbow Rybelsus and Wegovy are exactly the same active ingredient. one is a daily tablet and one is a weekly injection. personal choice.

Lisa3617 · 01/06/2024 18:48

This med Rybelsus is awesome. It has helped me bring my A1C down to 5.1 from a high of 9.7. I first started with the 3mg and am now on the 14mg. Been on this med since March and while I did experience some nausea and mild upset stomach it went away after about a week. It has also helped me lose 50lbs as well. I also take with metformin. I should be the poster child for this drug...even though I'm 50 - https://onlinecheappills.com/semaglutide.html
