I am on a diet and like to track my weight. My digital scales broke yesterday and so I hd to go and get some more. The only ones within my budget were glass ones which I bought. I weighed myself this morning and find that the reading is not correct. It shows tht between yesterday and today I have lost a stone whiich is NOT the case. The scales i used that broke were wooden digital ones so could it be that glass scales do not accirately show yur proper weight. I have apparently gone from 10 stone 7 to 9 stone 7 overnight. I think these new scales are wrong and am inclined to take them back but wont be able to get a refund because they are not actually broken. I got my previous ones from Amazon so all I can do now is go onto Amazon and get the same ones again, I am aiming to shed about a stone but I know full well that this reading is not accurate

Does anyone else have this issue with different scales. I will never use glass scales again

Mine weigh half a stone different depending on what part of the floor they are placed on. I just take home weight scales as a guide. I use the ones in boots or other pharmacies if I want an actual weight (then try to find the bit of floor that is closest 😆 )

Bellyblueboy · 15/02/2024 08:51

I have never had a swing that dramatic - my parents scales show I am a little lighter than my scales.

do some ache it’s still have scales with the printed read out? Or could you ask a close friend or relative if you can step on their scale? Then you can take the scales back and say they are definitely faulty.

of course if could be your old scales?

Hoglet70 · 15/02/2024 08:51

Can you weigh some things you know the weight of to compare? Maybe your old ones were wrong.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/02/2024 08:55

Why can't you take them back? I would.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 15/02/2024 09:00

Weigh a bag or sugar or something on them and see if it's right or wrong. If they're wrong, take them back. If they're right then likely it's weighing you correctly and your old ones were wrong.

PegasusReturns · 15/02/2024 09:01

new scales may be wrong, old scales may be wrong. They both might be wrong.

If you want accurate readings the important thing is that you weigh yourself on the same scales, in the same place, at the same time, wearing the same thing.

Starrysky812 · 15/02/2024 09:07

As PPs have said, either scales could be wrong. Maybe your old ones were weighing you too heavy; maybe your new ones are weighing you too light. I've always had glass scales and they were accurate for me, as they matched the weight I got at WW each week and at antenatal appointments. However when I got together with my now husband, I stood on his scales and they weighed me as 5kg lighter than that! So there's definitely a possibility that results can vary wildly between scales.

pickledandpuzzled · 15/02/2024 09:15

First of all, don’t panic. Your weight hasn’t changed.

Secondly as PPs say, both scales could be inaccurate.

You have three choices-

Restart the number you are using as what matters is the change over time not the actual numbers.

Get weighed somewhere accurate- GP surgery or boots or leisure centre. Use that to identify which scales were accurate.
Bear in mind it will also be different from your old scales because of time of day and clothes.

Go monthly and use that instead.

Flute56 · 15/02/2024 12:45

I did have a medical a few months ago and was weighed and the result was 10 stone 3 at the GP surgery. I keep my digital scales on the same place on the floor each time and always weigh first thing in the morning before breakfast. I have ordered the identical scales from Anazon that broke and will weigh myseslf with them and compare to the glass ones and I guarantee the ones from Ammazon will be 10 stone whatever because that is my true weight. The glass ones are wrong. No need to weigh anything else to double check the accuracy

Bring back the scales. Just say they are not suitable.

Go to the pharmacy and weigh yourself there and calm down!

So what are you very upset about? Just get a refund for faulty scales.

waistchallenge · 15/02/2024 13:49

Do you think you could be moving towards eating disorder territory if this has really upset you a lot?

I use waist circumference now instead of scales, I find myself less fixated on a figure and it helps me focus on my body fat and how I actually look, rather than looking down at the scales and ignoring the reality.

BTW I had glass scales previously that used to only work properly on the solid floor of the ground floor rather than the wooden floor of the first floor that must have had some flex in it.

BIWI · 15/02/2024 15:57

Are you putting the scales on carpet? They're often much less accurate if so. Unless you buy ones which are specifically designed for carpet rather than a solid floor.

Vegetus · 15/02/2024 16:54

I can lose 5 pounds by moving the scales a few metres across.

Flute56 · 16/02/2024 19:55

ok ive just received the new scales from Amazon. I tried them and bearing in mind i have eaten and am wearing clothes, my weight showed 10 stone 9. I carefully noted which part of my kitchen floor I put thm on and replaced them with the glass scales in exactly the same position on the floor and stood on the scales. My weight was 9 stone 9. I did go to boots to use their scales and was the same as I was with the new ones (10 stone 9) so the glass ones are definately faulty and I will be returning them. Glass scakes should be taken off the market

NigelHarmansNewWife · 16/02/2024 19:59

So much drama over a faulty product! Nowt to do with them being made of glass, they just aren't properly calibrated.

pickledandpuzzled · 16/02/2024 20:05

My glass scales are really accurate.
Did you read the instructions? I wonder whether they can be calibrated- 1stone is a big error.

These particular scales are inaccurate, get a refund and move on from it. Good lord.

Hotpinkangel19 · 16/02/2024 21:40

My glass scales are completely accurate. You are being slightly OTT over a set of faulty scales. Just return them!

Good grief, just take them back, products are sometimes faulty and need returning,it's no biggy.

BaroqueInterlude · 17/02/2024 00:31

@Flute56 Digital scales 'decide' on your weight and fix it. This means that if you, say, put your hand on the back of a chair or a cupboard as you are stepping onto the scales, they will fix your weight at a lighter point because you are leaning on something, unlike analogue scales which will recalibrate when you stop leaning. I was caught out like that and wondering about bizarre fluctuations in my weight until I realised what was happening.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/02/2024 00:54

I'm.on my second pair of glass scales. They are pretty accurate.

It sounds as though your scales are faulty. Take them back and get a refund.
