Is anyone with an underactive Thyroid having success/weightloss with Wegovy/GLP 1 injections?

I keep seeing lots of positive reports of weightloss and Wegovy or similar. Has anyone had good losses with these injections and an underactive Thyroid (Hasimotos), please?

Also, is there a certain online Pharmacist that you recommend due to a lower cost/reliable supplies etc?

I'm presuming that you've had to go down the private route because the GP won't prescribe? Thought its worth checking as it seems costly, but worth it I imagine.

Last Q - are you needing to take it for life/long term or are people coming off it and keeping the weight off?

Thanks everyone. I'm trying to decide whether to go for it and just want to avoid any pitfalls.

I am on Ozempic. Just the 1mg. My low thyroid is pretty well controlled with thyroxine. I have lost on Ozempic around 20 kilos and have another 9 to go. I am not sure if it is life long but I will ask my GP to have me on it for at least 6 months at goal. So my weight can stabilise.

How long have you been on it @DrJump ?

Oh2beatsea · 12/02/2024 08:11

That is good going @DrJump . I bet you feel very different with being 20kg lighter. Do you have more energy? The Thyroid fatigue is draining at times.

I've been on it for 8 months. I had surgery prior to it and was on a program to lose weight prior to. So have lost 50 kilos. However this last 20 has really seen my energy and confidence return. I feel very much like myself again. So much more energy.

I've had under active thyroid for 29 years now. I've been on Ozempic for a year and lost 4 stone. I'm staying on it and hoping to lose 3 more stone this year coming.

Yes have had an underactive thyroid since childhood, pretty well controlled with Levothyroxine in that I have never needed to see hospital about it as an adult at all.

Had Saxenda in past (got to the point the GP did a prescription of the diabetic version of Saxenda called Victoza for a short while but I was not allowed a high dose/pens were capped to 2 per month so it was rather ineffective I found personally for weight loss, just kept the test results good) and currently on a weekly injection at the highest dose privately but not so sure Trulicity is considered a true hyped weight loss injection. I remember the diabetic nurse mentioning Trulicity back in lockdown as a then newish diabetic then which was actually what made me find Saxenda.

Would not be on the injections long term or for life due to stock issues. Having been through two out of stock situations I could not bare a third. Plus I spoke to a clinic in the UK last year about surgery who said the pens only suppress appetite for so long. Of course they too provide a service so it's all subjective.

I've lost weight/kept it off but I'm fortunate to be able to exercise 7 days a week and quite grateful both times the pens have got me ok'd for operations it turned out so that's how I'm left to view it.
No real side effects from the injections expect constipation at times (treatable) and stools being pencil thin.

@DrJump , where you prescribed it via your GP?

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 15/10/2024 08:08

@caringcarer , how did you obtain your medication please? Is you thyroid function monitored?

Both from my GP. I've been on Levothyroxine for 29 years now. My GP put me on Ozempic a year ago because I am very overweight, have asthma, high blood pressure and then in blood test they said I was pre diabetic. I've lost over 4 stone on Ozempic. I'm still losing weight now but much more slowly about 0.2 kg a week. The first 3 stone came off really quite quickly. The forth stone took about 6 months and the last 5 kg have taken several months but I'm keeping going.

I have to see practice nurse every 2 months for weigh in and blood pressure and I have a blood test for thyroid function every 6 months.
