Wegovy and blood test results

I've just had my first set of bloods done since being on wegovy for 3 months. (the GP doesn't know I'm on it as ordered online)

It's come back with high TSH level of 8.8 (meaning an underactive thyroid) do you think this has been brought on by the wegovy or unrelated? I don't want to stop the wegovy as it's working so well! GP wants me to make an appointment to see him.

I can't help but I do hope you are going to tell the GP you are using Wegovy.

Bumblebeehum · 08/02/2024 13:55

The GP will have been notified by the provider of Wegovy, they should be supportive of you wanting to lose weight if your BMi is significant.

Go see them, try to do it as safely as possible.

I'm in ozempic and if anything it's helped my underactive thyroid. So I'd be surprised if it had brought in the issue. But you need to ask your GP about it.

Titwillow55 · 08/02/2024 14:05

No, they haven't been notified, I didn't have to provide GP details. But I will tell them at the appointment. Agree @Workwhat google seems to suggest if anything it would help an underactive thyroid. Will see what they say on Monday of course, just hoping I don't have to stop wegovy as it's been brilliant even in just 3 months.

Yeah so my tsh sits at around 2 to 3. Which apperently isn't amazing on levothyroxine but in range. Then first bloods after starting ozempic it was 0.5.

It's an amazing med for helping me with weight loss. I don't know your weight and history but unfortunately I don't think obesity is a simple thing of some people just eating too much. But I do worry about the thyroid effects as its obviously doing something which I'm not sure is understood long term.

Payakan · 08/02/2024 18:09

One of the big adverse effect of Ozempic was thyroid cancer in animal models. Of course the lifespan of a human is very different from the lifespan of a mouse. 9 days for a mouse are equal to 1 year for a human.

Given the blood test, I wouldn't ignore the thyroid results and you need to tell your GP.

Update from my GP appointment in case anyone finds this thread in the future. Told him about the Wegovy he was very supportive of that, said it wouldn’t be causing the increase in TSH. Actually Wegovy can lower TSH so that’s all good. They’ve given me a prescription for underactive thyroid and it seems I was worried unnecessarily that it was Wegovy related!

Glad that you can keep on taking it
Good luck with your weight loss.

It's totally unrelated. In fact if you have an under active thyroid it's probably why you found it hard to lose weight in the first place. Once you get on Levothyroxine you will lose weight even quicker.

Titwillow55 · 12/02/2024 21:38

@caringcarer yes exactly what the GP said.

I’m just about to start wegovy but the doctor what’s to put me on statins and hrt. Is anyone on wegovy and on hrt or statins?

Movinghouseatlast · 17/04/2024 17:17

I'm on HRT. There are no issues.

When you fill in the form for Wegovy you have to say what medication you are on.

@Jay8692 I'm two weeks into Mounjaro and my blood pressure had dropped from high to elevated and now into normal range. This is a reported side effect. I'm thrilled as I've been trying for ages to get it down. I was actually monitoring it as it was picked up at my annual health check and I'm supposed to give a week's readings to GP.
