NHS BMI weight calculator online

I like to stay healthy and check my BMI from time to time. I dont use the NHS calculator very often but it always says I am ok for my height and dfall in the healthy correct weight category. When you use this site, it give you various ethinicity options according to what race you are. I am multi racial which means I am one quarter black and 3 thirds whitee. When I have calculated mdy BMI before i have always refused to state what race i am and clicked prefer not to say. This time I picked multi racial and the outcome at the end said I am considered overweight. I went back on and put in my height and weight and clicked white and it came out as I was in the healthy category and the correct weight for my height.

Why should a black or asian person with the same readings as me be considered overweight and yet a white person would not be classed as overweight? A person is a person irrispective of where they come from and the amount of fat on someones body should be the same regardless and it depends on genetics and what you eat. I come from a family of very slim people and have a healthy diet

dont get it

I think it is because the risk of diabetes increases at a lower weight for some ethnicities.

I think it is well known that BMi is not one size fits all and some ethnicities are more predisposed to diabetes and gaining weight in their midsection, which is the most ‘dangerous’ kind of weight to hold in terms of heart health. My partner is Asian and his whole male family hold all their weight in the stomach and he has generations of type 2 diabetes in his family too. So his BMI is calculated based on this risk factor

Yes, some ethnicities are known to have higher risk factors etc... However, I dislike BMI as a whole as when I'm in the healthy range I'm a size 4-6 and that's really unattainable.

You don’t have to use BMI you can use height to waist or waist to hip ratios to work out your risks

It’s because if the risk of diabetes.
