Intermittent fasting- 14/10

I'm looking to start as I would like to lose 1.5-2 stone by June. Has anyone had any success with intermittent fasting? I'm very new to this so any advice is welcome and if any one else wants to join please do :)

A friend of mine does it, and it seems to be a fancy way of saying skip breakfast.

Yep! It's basically skip breakfast and no post-dinner snacks. I've shifted a stone of baby weight since August.

I found it works alongside calorie counting for me because it stops me thinking about food, it helps having cut off points to reduce snacking and I find I naturally I eat less (feels like once I start eating I feel hungry all the time, but not an issue if I don't eat first thing). I started IF for digestive issues (which has helped) and then added in calorie counting when I realised IF was also helping me to loose weight too. I started off as a 14/16 (and 5ft) in May, I'm now an 8/10 (never weighed myself because I don't want to get obsessed). I think that its more a way of life for me than a diet now. The health benefits for me have been the most beneficial thing hence I want to stick to it. I also like the routine of it but don't feel I've failed if I have a day off (eg go out for breakfast) because I want to enjoy life as well. I also 'cheat' by having milk in tea during fasting because I think I need a sustainable way of eating, not a diet and I've found that with IF. I think it's a personal decision and it's what works for you, your lifestyle and your health. Any eating plan needs to be long-term, a lot of the diet industry diets are not long term hence people fail and the diet companies get more money when they rejoin. So finding a long term eating plan that helps you loose/maintain weight is what people need and for some that's IF for others it wouldn't work. I thought it wouldn't work for me but slowly built my hours up and realised it wasn't as hard as I thought and often forget to eat at 10 am and often it's 12 by the time I do eat.

When I did it before Xmas, I found it really easy to delay breakfast until around 10am (stopped eating around 6pm previous day). I felt more alert, better concentration etc.

Didn't do it long enough to lose weight as Xmas arrived!! I need to get back on it but I'm doing dry jan at the moment and that is taking up all my skills !

14/10 isn't enough to be effective, in my opinion. I mean, it's only very, very slightly removed from a normal eating pattern- if at all.

Intermittent fasting is great and really effective from around 16/8.

I've been doing 23:1 fasting for 11 days now along with calorie counting. Mostly I make one giant meal a day up to 1500 calories, I found that eating small meals through the day left me feeling continuously unsatisfied but by having it all at once I could really fill up to the point of being genuinely full.
So far I've lost 5.9lb. I do have a lot to lose but I'm 5"2 and very inactive so 1500 calories is hardly a deficit for me (I think around 300cals lower than my tdee)

I do it and it certainly keeps my weight down. I couldn’t do 16:8, but 14:10 (or 15:9 at a push) in conjunction with reduced calories works for me.

Taking this back up again as I’ve very much fallen off wagon.

I found it useful way previously of basically cutting calories without having to think about it too much. Also for me personally it fits in well with family meals etc as my kids don’t pay any attention to me eating or not eating breakfast and I’m normally busy at work in the morning so I’m distracted until lunch and then I eat a normal dinner at home. I usually try and keep the window between 12-8pm, so essentially it’s just skipping breakfast and not eating after dinner.

I just need to be mindful of what I’m actually eating in the window and not treat it as a snack free for all! That was definitely my downfall last time.

I get used to it quickly and some days I barely notice hunger and some days I’m chewing my own arm off by lunchtime. I drink a lot of green tea in the mornings.

Hey, IF has worked for me! I've been stuck at 75kg for a long time and wanted to be back in the 60s range. IF has helped me reach 68kg! I don't eat anything 6pm and then eat after 11am. Sour dough bread helped me too as I love my bread and this is easily digested. I hope IF works out for you too!

Good luck all !!😊

I have done 16:8 since September and have gone from 11 stone 8 to 9 stone 13. I have also tried to do 12000 steps a day. It’s been an absolutely game changer for me. I’m still losing weight although I’ve passed my goal because I really don’t find it difficult.

Snippit · 25/04/2024 10:44

I’ve been doing the 16:8 for well over a year now and I’ve got rid of my menopause belly. I have breakfast around midday, porridge with nuts and fruit, a healthy snack around 3.30 then an evening meal before 8pm. It’s the easiest eating regime I’ve ever followed and feel so much better for it. My whole digestion feels cleaner, and I’m no longer constipated, which used to be an issue with my usual eating regime.

I’d never revert back from it now I love how I feel doing it. I’ve also recently read that science has found that it helps good gut bacteria to flourish, which is a bonus. The first couple of weeks can be tricky, I was starving waiting for breakfast, but I wouldn’t change now, it suits my body.
