@user6190 So, as in any diet, the initial weight loss is glycogen stores and fluid (um, and waste products as less food in = less waste out), ie only a few pounds of it is body fat. It’s normal when reducing carbs/calories to lose a significant amount in the first few days/week but it is unrealistic to expect that to continue. Your weight loss should continue at 1-2lbs of fat per week.
This is no different on ozempic/wegovy: the medication itself doesn’t make you lose weight - it’s the lifestyle changes that come about as a result of taking it - eg, you don’t feel hungry so you don’t think about food or snack; you find it hard(er) to eat more than 800 cals/day; the way it slows down the emptying of the gut means it is impossible to eat a full meal or binge.
The effect of the medication is strongest in the first 1-2 weeks after an increase, as the body gets used to it, which is why you need to increase from 0.25, to 0.5 and onward to 1.0 and so on.
So don’t panic. However, you CAN still plateau on this medication. I’ve just had a 6-8 week plateau on 2.4mg. There was Christmas etc and I thought I had really been good - been deprived even ☹️ However, after a very hard look at my diet, I realised that although I was not eating big meals, my calorie intake HAD slowly crept up. A ready meal/bought sandwich etc, a couple of biscuits and 4-6 teas/coffees a day easily make 800-1000 calories, horrifyingly enough, and yet I felt that ‘I had hardly eaten anything’ so the glass or two of wine a couple of nights a week, the odd slice of toast or the chips I’d made too many of for the family meal ‘didn’t count’.
In fact, the meds and the plateau (a real one, not one after two weeks of starting) have been really useful as I’ve realised that the snacking, the unconscious eating (sometimes just to be polite with visitors) seriously sabotages weight loss as it is easy to end up eating 1400+ cals/day and yet not eat a ‘proper meal’ with the family all week. I realised I was completely deluding myself as to how much I was [not] eating. I have now cut all snacks/little tastes/picking off the oven tray and count everything I eat/drink again and lost 3.5lbs in the last 10 days. Have started walking more too.
I also have PCOS and am hypothyroid and have been blaming these things for years, only now I accept that I really do have to make permanent lifestyle/attitude changes - snacking of any kind between meals, especially on days when I’ve not reached my 10000 foot steps goal, is an absolute no-no.
Hang in there, the meds work - but maybe not in the way - or at the speed - you were hoping. I am more than 3st lighter after 8m and confident the last 3st will be gone by my holiday in July now I’ve brought myself back in line. I’ve never stuck to a ‘diet’ for this long or so easily. You will get there too.
