What is a healthy diet?

I've been trying to lose weight, and will be ramping up my efforts in January. But I feel like I've lost sight of what is a healthy diet.

Please could you are with me what you eat in a day, some healthy meals, your favourites, links etc as I am completely lost and want to start the new year with a plan.

Healthy or low calorie? Obviously there is a lot of overlap, but are you looking to instil generally good healthy habits?

Short answer: eat food, mostly plants, not too much is my favourite advice.

Ie eat stuff that is not ultra processed or reinforced with weird stuff but looks like real food and cook for yourself whenever possible; eat more veg instead of meat, bread, fatty stuff, sugary stuff; and control quantity through sensible portions and no unnecessary/emotional snacking.

I like the recipes on The Doctor’s Kitchen.

I really think eating a wide variety of plant products is the key to health. Obviously lots of fruit and veg but other plant based foods like nuts, olive oil etc.
I think it's good to have each meal as 50% of the plate is veg, 25% protein and 25% carbs

@olderbutwiser good question, both but really good habits for the long term I think. I'd like to hope healthy with portion control would help the weight loss!

This, basically. Just a good old fashioned balanced diet. No fads, no ‘bio hacks’.

And, if you can, get some exercises every day.

A healthy diet will be one with plenty of veg and fruit, reduce your ultra processed food intake, wholegrains, mediterranean diet, lean meats, fish and some ferented foods (live yoghurt works).

I Consider a healthy diet to be no/little processed food.
Basically meat, vegs and fruit.
Lots of water.

I have found the exercise front a lot easier than food, I'm going to the gym three times a week and going for a twenty minute walk at lunch every day!

I'd love it if anyone could share some links to recipes? Thank you!

I use the hunger satiety scale
It is not just the food you eat it is preparing yourself in good time and not allowing yourself to become too hungry or too full up.

A healthy diet is one that is filled with variety of fresh foods and little processed foods.

I'm 8 and a half stone. Today:

Daily hot water and lemon
Daily protein shake- vegan protein powder, vegan yoghurt, raw spinach, banana, pear and oat milk all blended together.

B Porridge made with oat milk, banana, nut butter and seeds.

D hummus, spinach and tomato sandwich

Snack some nuts and dried fruit and an apple

T jacket potato with mixed beans, vegan spread & vegetables

2.5 litres of water daily and vegan tea and coffee.

I usually eat avocado, healthy dishes such as vegan lasagne, I also eat lots of lentils, vegetables and chickpeas.

I only ever eat chocolate on a Sunday and am a teetotal. I run 5-15 miles every week.
I feel great every day and never feel like I'm missing out on anything (although people like to tell me I am).

For me what works is small portions of carbohydrates, plenty of protein with every meal, plenty of veg / fruit / nuts, and a moderate amount of fat.

For breakfast I have 2 - 3 eggs every morning cooked in a knob of butter, with a coffee. Keeps my blood sugar stable and I'm not hungry afterwards for ages.

Lunch might be a small jacket potato with a can of tuna, mayo plus half a plate of salad with olive oil dressing on. Piece of fruit.

Snack of walnuts or Brazil nuts. With a banana if I'm going to gym afterwards (I lift weights 2 hours a week - thats changed my life more than anything!).

Tea is something like a home made chicken curry with coconut milk in and veg. I eat it in a bowl with a spoon, with no rice, and rest of family has some rice.
Or I'll do baked salmon with veg, or slow cooked beef stew. If I am doing something like spaghetti bolognaise I would just eat the sauce in a bowl with cheese on top and the rest of the family have it with spaghetti.

I'm not demonising carbohydrates (because I do eat them in moderation) but I just know how my own body reacts to them and I try and limit my intake. Making sure your blood sugar is stable is the key to losing weight I find.
