Would a dietician help me with this constant hunger?

I am always hungry and I can never lose weight because of it. I feel I have eaten enough but the nagging ravenous hunger strikes again. It's so frustrating. I have tried everything to combat this, but it doesn't seem to work.

Would a dietician be able to help with this?

For the record a enjoy healthy nutritious food and eat like that first. It's like something insatiable needs satisfying and I can't concentrate until I've eaten.

Not a dietician, but have you seen the gp to rule out other issues like worms/thyroid etc or are you breastfeeding etc?

friss · 16/12/2023 22:45

I have an under active thyroid. Oh gosh worms that scares the hell out of me, but I have had this problem for years so I hopefully would have noticed worms? Omg that has freaked me out how would I know?

I had this. Intense hunger for years ( I wasn’t dieting), and it got much worse when I did a ‘paleo’ (low carb) diet on the advice of a medical doctor who wasn’t NHS and had some very unusual theories.

It made me very miserable. My GP and a consultant endocrinologist couldn’t help. It eventually resolved with Chinese herbal medicine and also self-prescribing myself something called Konjac root - I think you can buy this as a food supplement and it’s also an ingredient in some low carb noodles you can buy. It really fills you up and curbs hunger pangs.

I rarely get the uncontrollable hunger now, and only get the odd pang when I eat a meal that’s not well put together, or I’m rushed while eating, or stressed out. Or if I eat things I know I can’t digest. My digestion seems to be very delicate so I’m very careful with my diet. The hunger seems to be my signal that my digestion isn’t happy.

I would talk to your GP initially to rule things out and see whether a dietician referral is appropriate.

Have you tried intermittent fasting? I find it helps curb hunger after a few days. It's tough for a few days then your body seems to adapt. Also knowing that the kitchen is closed between 7pm and 10am (10.30-6.45 ish eating window) really helps me too. I just don't eat during this period as I know it will break my fast.

Mine seems to have improved with age. I tend to feel fuller now

Also 2 bits of toast in the morning. I tried loe carb too but got weak with hunger, now I just get hungry at lunchtime in a normal feeling way.

You're going to get millions of idea's on this lol. Worth checking for gastritis or if it's IBS? I get more hungry after eating something like an apple (apples are the worst for this for me) as the discomfort of digestion causes a hunger like pain

timetofetgit · 09/01/2024 05:26

Are you drinking enough? The body can confuse hunger for thirst.

NADJA24 · 09/01/2024 05:29

Thet would run blood tests and suggest slow carb releasr high protein and increased water. They might plan specific high protein low cal snacks and suggest keeping a diary and getting busy to distract from hunger. They will say drink water, plain sparkling or herbal tea. They might say cut on caffeine. It's all the usual tricks.

How many grams of protein are you having a day? Do you have protein shakes?

I’ve been seeing a dietitian and the main thing she bangs on about is protein protein protein I am for 70g of protein a day … it feels like a lot of food to get there

shearwater2 · 09/01/2024 06:48

They also need to bang on about fibre, I'd be the size of a house if I was relying on protein to fill me up without being careful with portions, as I can eat a lot of protein sources until they come out of my ears, and many are also high calorie.

As well as checking underlying causes, I'd be recording my food intake and making sure I was having 25 - 30g fibre a day.

Try intermittent fasting.
Drink lots of water. Don't drink calories.
Cut down on carbs and -- especially!! - sugar.
No UPF.
Eat lots of vegetables and protein.
Protein is what fills you up and stops you feeling hungry.

My dinner yesterday involved one chicken breast, brown rice, veg and a pot of high protein yoghurt and was 55g of protein in itself while only being about 500 calories.

One of my typical lunches is a hot smoked salmon fillet with veg - 21g protein per fillet. Add a couple of eggs - 35g protein in a meal for about 500 calories.

Breakfast - 45g All Bran, High Protein yoghurt (trying mango Skyr at the moment), chopped up banana - 330 calories, 25g protein, 14g fibre.

I don't tend to have two yogurts a day - that was actually breakfast/dinner on two different days 🙂
