Hello I've lost 4 stones in a year has been tough and my aim was to be a normal BMI
I've just squeezed into 25 but honestly I'm still huge!! Big fat stomach
Boobs have remained at a 38FF
In reality how much more do I need to lose?
I'm thinking maybe two more stones ?
So disheartening

Well done one the weight loss. Four stone is amazing and you must feel great.

what dress size did you start and and what are you now? At a BMI of 25 it is unlikely you are huge. Are are probably being very critical of yourself.

Hi . Congratulations on your amazing weight loss and healthy BMI . I’ve recently lost 3 stone . When I reached my healthy BMI of 24.9 . ( 25 is still overweight apparently but there you go ) I still felt a bit over weight . I lost another 1/2 a stone and felt about right . I still look at photographs of myself at my new weight and still think I look a bit overweight but clearly I’m not , and neither are you ! So well done .

Very well done, you should be super proud. Perhaps look into waist to height ratio, as for some people (actually a lot of people) BMI is way off. I'm not suggesting you're huge at all btw, and you have done so well.

Well done on the weight loss!
I'm technically right at the end of the scale of overweight bordering on obese at a bmi of 29 and I am a size 12/14, weigh 12 stone ish.
BMI is not a fair representation for a lot of people.

endofanera23 · 22/11/2023 23:05

I look my best at a BMI of around 18.5/19 tops. I'm currently about 21/22 and there's no denying I have at least a stone of extra fat on me (that I just can't shift!). I do have quite a fine bone structure which I think must play a part.

I think the BMI range is catering for that though, I.e. you could take 3 people my height and one "perfect" weight (medically) would be hitting a BMI of 19, another's is 21 and the other is 24. It'll change based on bones and muscles and things! Basically, I think you have to base it on how you look and feel rather than numbers which are just a guide.

A BMI of 25 is the upper limit (so the medical profession tell us) of a healthy weight, the fattest you can be without putting your health at risk. Just as a BMI of about 18 is the thinnest you can be without putting your health at risk. I would say that most people with a BMI of 18 look extremely thin and, equally, most people with a BMI of 25 look heavy. I would aim for the middle of the range, 20-22.

Congrats on your weight loss! As to your ideal weight, it really depends on your build, how much muscle you carry & where you carry your weight.

A naturally narrow person who doesn't work out is likely to look chubby at BMI approaching 25. A broader shouldered person who works out and carries a bit of muscle will look leaner.

Equally a person who carries their weight round their middle will have to be lighter to look slim than someone with more even weight distribution.

Are you doing any strength / resistance training? That can also help. Muscle burns more calories than fat as well as the aesthetic benefits. Obviously if you have a tummy no amount of exercise will give you a flat tum, but getting your BMR up by building a bit of muscle could help your continued weight loss.

That is amazing weight loss!

I think your story goes to show that BMI is a pretty rough index. Your weight is affected by your fat distribution, muscle mass, bone structure and density, so at the top end of 'normal' it's understandable that you might still be carrying some fat in places you don't want it.

I would second switching to measurements rather than weight when setting your next goals, and focussing on exercise/weight training to help get the shape you are hoping for.

Elastica23 · 23/11/2023 12:57

What are your measurements, OP?

Check your waist to height ratio.

I don't consider myself fat at BMI 27- size 12 clothes are comfortable, I'm 5'7", waist measurement is in the middle of the healthy range, I have a proportionate hour glass figure, I'm fit and healthy and do plenty of exercise, resting HR is 51, BP 110/65, cholesterol, iron, blood sugar all healthy, yet I don't really need to be 12st 4lbs and am trying to get down to 11st which would be BMI 24 for me. Definitely not less for me - I think size 10s will be comfortable/loose and I'd risk my HR and BP going very low indeed.
