Charles Clark's "New High Protein Diet" - Anyone done it?

My DP and I started this a week ago. I need to lose about 6 stone to be in my ideal range, and he needs to lose about 3. He reckons he lost 2-3 stone using this diet before, and after one week he's already lost 3 kilos! I have only lost .5 of a kilo, but it's better than going up I guess!

This diet is essentially similar to Atkins, though you aren't supposed to go into ketosis, and the daily carb allowance is 2-3 times higher (40g, 60g at absolute most). I'm finding it fairly easy to do, and I'm not hungry, but I am TIRED and think am a bit constipated (TMI?).

I've been low carbing for a while, and this was the first book I read.

I've never followed a particular plan, and don't count my carbs, just restrict them by eating low carb veg and avoiding bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, fruit and sugar.

Firstly your husband will lose more than you and more quickly - it's an unfortunate and very unfair fact that it's harder for women to lose!

You may be tired to start with, and may experience headaches, but this should just be temporary, and after this is over you may find that you are much more energetic and need less sleep. Drink plenty of water (which should also help with the constipation). YOu may also need to make sure that you're getting enough potassium and magnesium - and a supplement won't help you here, as the quantities of these minerals will be too small. Try using Lo Salt rather than ordinary salt, and the occasional half avocado is also a good source.

Good luck!

Perhaps you could go to your local health food shop and ask if they have any dietery supplements for constipation.

Re the constipation, are you getting your carbs from veg?

sarah73076 · 12/03/2008 16:50

Because, how much have you managed to lose on it? I'm so curious!

I'm having veg and the occasional nectarine. . .yesterday had spinach and watercress salad with cucumber and avocado, really did think that would get me going! I take a prenatal vitamin too....

I keep hoping this pain in my lower left abdomen is ovulation, but as my temp isn't going up, I think I'm just stopped up! Chugging water like no tomorrow trying to make myself 'unstuck'!

Oh and I agree about the headaches, I've had a nearly permanent one since starting this malarky. DP says if I don't start feeling better on it by next week, that I should go back to the Marilyn Glenville 'Fat Around the Middle' diet and he will just stick with the current. That will suck though, I don't want to have to deal with completely different diets and it's so much easier doing it with him!

I have lost and gained and lost and gained - because I tend to fall off the carb wagon at certain times of the year (holiday/Christmas, etc)

When I first started I lost over a stone, and (for the most part) now use LC eating to maintain my weight. Now I'm LCing to lose weight again, and I'm doing it slowly - at a rate of 1lb a week.

That might sound really slow, but I'm also still drinking wine. I know that if I cut the alcohol out then weight loss will speed up, but I don't enjoy being 'on a diet' and feeling deprived!

BTW - I wouldn't eat the nectarines if I were you! Very carby. If you want fruit, try rhubarb or blueberries. Much lower in carbs.

If you're still suffering from headaches, I hope you're not suffering in silence? Take painkillers and be done with it. It should only be temporary.
