Can’t seem to get control

I’m 5ft 3 and weigh 11 stone (🤮).. I need to lose 1.5 stone minimum. I can lose 5 pounds but then seem to get stuck. The thing is I don’t eat crap so can’t cut that out. I obviously eat too much but I’m really, really struggling. I’m 50 now and the old ways don’t seem to work.

I do have an under active thyroid but I’m well medicated.

I feel a bit desperate to be honest.

Any one had any success at same height/weight?

I could do it on the fast 800 but can’t seem to sustain.

Come over to the LOSE IT threads. We've got a Christmas countdown edition. The threads helped me lose over 2 stone. I'm the same height as you and weighed 68kg and now weigh 56.2kg. I did get down to 54kg but regained over the summer and have only in the last 2-4 weeks really got back on track and have lost 2kg. I'm 47. I est around 1500 calories a day and don't eat after 6pm. I eat mainly carbs and don't deny myself anything as long as it's within those calories and before 6pm. I weigh in kg and use happy scale app to keep me motivated. Kg is smaller segments so progress is recorded as little and often. You can do it!

witnessprotection73 · 18/11/2023 22:20

Thank you @JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots could you post the link pleaS? I’ve search but can’t see this specific thread. I’m not sure I eat 1500 calories a day now! 🤷‍♀️…

🥳LOSE IT! 🥳Christmas 2023 Countdown Thread 🥳 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weightlosss_chat/4931960-lose-it-christmas-2023-countdown-thread

My maintenance calories are 1900-2100. Have you worked out your tdee?

gofullpelt · 18/11/2023 22:33

I'm the same height/age and was 11st 12. I didn't want to diet as such because I can never sustain it and always feel hungry so I decided to try and eat for nutrition and try and do the 30 different plants a week challenge (Zoe nutrition) and try and cut out as much processed food as possible.

Just by swapping in interesting salads or veg in place of potatoes/rice/bread most of the time (this has mainly been noticeable for lunches where I've been making salads with loads of chopped veg and stuff like chickpeas instead of having a sandwich and crisps) I've lost 11lb over about 8-10 weeks.

So it's not been super fast loss, but I feel like I've changed some habits and can stick to them because I'm not feeling hungry.

witnessprotection73 · 19/11/2023 09:56

@JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots I'm in! Thanks x

@gofullpelt thanks for your reply. I actually did the ZOE programme and I loved the test. I’m good blood sugar, excellent gut microbes, good diet and poor blood fat. I haven’t continued as it’s super expensive and the app is crap. I’ve definitely incorporated more beans and pulses in to my diet but I’m not eating 30 plants a week, I need to eat more. Plus if I ate nuts the way they suggest I’d gain even more weight!

OP posts:
gofullpelt · 19/11/2023 12:12

@witnessprotection73 yes you're right about the nuts and I do just use them sparingly, but by focussing on getting loads of different veg into me it's made my diet so much better.

I'm just off to make a salad with sprouts that I saw on ambitious kitchen (no nuts!)

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 20/11/2023 07:20

I’m the same height and I’m 48. After doing the tdee calculator I am on 1100 calories and I lose about 1 pound a week !

witnessprotection73 · 20/11/2023 22:15

@Sleeplessinseattle234 my TDEE is 1777 so I think I deduct 500 for loss?

Hi I’m also 50 and struggled with weight gain around menopause - I lost 2 stone on a low carb diet and kept it off, going low carb and cooking from scratch is the only way I’ve been able to keep the weight off. I am also hypothyroid

witnessprotection73 · 21/11/2023 06:40

@Touty thanks for your reply. I’m going low carb too. Despite the ZOE study showing me that my blood sugar control is good, low carb is the only thing that works. But I have high cholesterol so have to be careful with fat too!
how long did it take you to
Lose 2 stone? Thanks x

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 21/11/2023 07:13

@witnessprotection73 yes. I tried this a year ago and started on 1350 calories but I barely lost any weight at all. This time I have other medical problems attached and found that unless I was eating less than that I wasn’t loosing weight at all. But I eat a lot of fruit and veg which feels me up daily so u don’t feel hungry even on the low amount. I don’t eat rubbish though. Most everything I eat is good for me. So no processed foods or biscuits or cakes.

TheRealHousewife · 21/11/2023 12:02

Hi @witnessprotection73 I’m 3 inches less in height than you (at least 😬), have a medicated thyroid and was well over 12 stones when I started my weight loss journey about 6 years ago 😮 and my weight loss has been slow due to disability. Don’t let that dishearten you. Progress is progress. Today over 45lbs lighter. If I hadn’t taken action when I did and remained diligent and consistent I am certain I would be 45lbs heavier.

You can do this but be mindful there are no quick fixes, no magic bullet; just you yourself/mindset/healthier habits and time together with a way of eating that suits your body/mimd. Bottom line, people need to ingest less calories than they expand day to day. Start planning your meals and include decent protein, good fats & fibre. Take it meal by meal, day by day and you will get there.

Thank you for the share @JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots 👍❤️

SaraAndersson · 21/11/2023 12:41

Hi one thing that has worked for me is walking 10,000 steps. Maybe that could work for you hun?

witnessprotection73 · 21/11/2023 14:42

@SaraAndersson yes I agree and I love walking & on my non office days I do this, but unfortunately 3 days a week I’m stuck on an industrial estate and only get 30 mins. I need to try and get out for the 30 mins and ignore the lorry fumes 😂..

OP posts:
SaraAndersson · 22/11/2023 09:56

@witnessprotection73 Go out and walk those 30 mins, you'll get 3000 steps ❤️ But to really lose weight you might have to walk 10,000 steps daily🥰

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 22/11/2023 10:13

If you can't walk try bouncing on a gym ball. I do it watching tv if I've not been able to walk much. A bounce counts as a step and it's great for your thighs and core.

Touty · 23/11/2023 04:58

It took me six months to lose the weight, but it has to be a lifestyle change, I find that if I go back to eating say bread, pasta, potatoes, rice that I put weight on.

witnessprotection73 · 23/11/2023 08:35

@Touty Do you low carb? This is what I’m doing as it’s the only way the weight comes off.

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 23/11/2023 12:23

I'm 58, post menopausal, aldo have an underactive thyroid (medicated). I've come down from 12 stones 3 lbs (😲) to 9 stones 5 lbs, so nearly 3 stones this year by doing intermittent fasting 16:8, cutting out a lot of mindless snacking, and doing a daily workout before having anything to eat. Weight loss is slowing down now because I've pretty much reached goal weight, but it was dropping quickly when I started earlier this year.

I had begun to despair of being heavier than DH, thinking menopause meant I was destined to be overweight forever.

I'm really pleased that it's worked so well. I don't calorie count, am not consciously low carb eating. I eat mostly plant based, and have been vegetarian for nearly 40 years.

Touty · 23/11/2023 17:24

@witnessprotection73 yes im on low carb, it’s the only way I can keep the weight off.

YessicaHaircut · 23/11/2023 18:11

I’m the same height as you OP, also hypothyroid (medicated and pretty well controlled), 40 and perimenopausal. Have managed to drop from 12st to 10st since this May on low (ish) carb. Have a look at the Bootcamp threads on here, some really good support and recipes/meal ideas. Honestly it hasn’t really felt like a diet, I can have lovely things like steak, salmon, cheese, butter, berries and dark chocolate. I’m not good at feeling deprived or counting calories so it’s been brilliant for that and definitely feels like a sustainable lifestyle change rather than a quick fix.
I also cycle to work 3x a week and usually 2 workouts as well, spinning/swim/aquafit. But the changes in my diet are definitely what has made the difference for me.

witnessprotection73 · 23/11/2023 21:05

@CatOnAHotShedRoof thats amazing and inspiring! Post like this give me hope so thank you. Feeling determined and think if I keep checking in here and being organised about shopping I may just crack this! x

@YessicaHaircut thank you for sharing and well done, that’s amazing! I do need to up my exercise. And yes for me low ish carb is the way forward x
