Are home body fat scales accurate at all?!

I’ve been trying to lose weight for around a year, trying various level deficits with no success. My BMI is resolutely stuck at 27 (down from 33 when I initially lost 3 stone before this 🙂). I’m very active and strength train too so thought that possibly I was losing weight but also gaining muscle.

I bought scales that supposedly measure body fat, muscle etc and alongside my weight not changing (bar fluctuating over the month with hormones) - my fat, muscle etc haven’t changed either.

However my body has changed. I’ve lost 2 inches around my waist and clothes that were too tight last winter are now loose. I’ve dropped at least a dress size - really going from a tight end of one size to a looser size below.

But my weight, fat, muscle are exactly the same?! I would have thought that the scales would show some change even if not accurate.

Has anyone else found this? I’m starting to think that this is just my weight now regardless of my size 🤔

It sounds impossible that your fat percentage hasn't changed at all!

Brilliant work BTW.

I don't think those scales are accurate but I'm not a doctor. I don't see how you would get definite measurements of that type without something more invasive.

No, they're not very accurate - mine seems to track my BMI when am pretty sure I am putting on muscle. https://www.healthline.com/health/body-fat-scale-accuracy#takeaway talks about some of the different measures.

I’ve had a few strange measurements from them where they interpret hormonal water retention as fat 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️. I think I’ll safely ignore it and focus on how clothes feel.

Thank you @PermanentTemporary - I’ve decided to ignore them as they mess with your head slightly when they insist nothing has changed
