Wegovy, why am I hesitating?

Should I go for it? Nearly 50, nearly 14 stone and bloody miserable about it. Any reason (other than the £) not to try it?

I will be very interested in this too.

Doggymummar · 12/11/2023 15:11

If you have a look at some of the established threads, they give you the good and bad sides.some f us have been on it all year.

CaramelEmporium · 12/11/2023 15:55

I’ve had a read thanks @Doggymummar
I think it’s the thought of it working, losing weight, then putting it back on if I can’t retrain my habits. It’s just too hopeless to contemplate. But maybe it’s enough for now to go on it, hopefully lose the weight and cross the next bridge when I get there.

I’m fat, menopausal, anxious and miserable. Be nice to at least tackle the fat and if I could fix the fatness the rest may improve you know?!

it works incredibly well and you need make no real effort yourself . but you will put weight back on if you don't use the time to reassess your general eating habits going forward. if you do both, then it's great

Crazymadchickenlady · 12/11/2023 16:00

I’ve just ordered it. Now nearly 60 and on average putting on about 5kilos a year. It can’t carry in like this I can hardly do my shoelaces up anymore and get really breathless walking up stairs and up hills. I am now far too heavy and want to get back to 10 or 11 stone again.

hopeishere · 12/11/2023 16:07

I'm worried about the link to thyroid cancer. And as someone says losing it and putting it all back on m!

BeyondMyWits · 12/11/2023 16:10

How are you going to feel about loose, saggy skin?

If you are menopausal and lose weight quickly, it is a reality.

CaramelEmporium · 12/11/2023 17:38

Not thrilled obvs! But I honestly feel like I’m heading fast towards heart disease, knee replacements etc if I don’t do something.

This is me too. I've hovered over the buy button for a few weeks now but for some reason I can't quite go through with it. The cost is obviously a consideration and I'd have to give up other stuff to pay for it, but I'm also making excuses not to commit. My current one is that it's Christmas soon, and who starts a diet/healthy eating plan now? I need to hear some success stories I think, they usually spur me on.

CaramelEmporium · 12/11/2023 17:53

Yes @Pushkinini but then I’m thinking if I don’t then before I know it it’ll be Christmas and I’ll be even heavier.

We’ve just back from holiday and I noticed the older women fell broadly into two camps - overweight/matronly or trim. I so want to be the latter.

I’d start now because the initial dose is so low as to be ineffective (so I found at least). It’s taken me several months to get to the 1.7mg pen which I finally feel is doing some good. And the cost is eye watering, but I want the positive health outcomes associated with a lower BMI.

DesdemonasWinterBloom · 12/11/2023 18:00

I've lost over 4 stone this year, and have taken Wegovy throughout. It's definitely not the magic fix people think it is. My main focus has been dieting (I follow WW) and exercise (gym 3 times a week, Personal Trainer 2 times a week, 10k steps a day, cycling 5 miles to work). I still feel hungry and like large portions but the Wegovy just slightly takes the edge off my constant thinking about food and helps me be a bit more sensible. Wegovy on its own wouldn't do anything for me, it just supports my other efforts.

TryAgainWithFeeling · 12/11/2023 18:05

I posted on another thread recommending the Zoe podcast on it (states Ozempic, but the same active ingredient). I found it a really good listen to understand how it works - and how it doesn’t.

Honestly I think the biggest mental barrier is thinking that we should be strong enough to lose weight without it. It’s framed as cheating. But that’s absolute rubbish, if losing weight were that simple there would not be an obesity epidemic.

For me, I’m quite new to taking it. At 0.5 it’s starting to have an effect for me. And it really reinforces the idea that for some reason I don’t get the normal satiated feeling from food, because now I’m starting to get that feeling, and it feels so much more “natural”! I think one day we’ll look at weight loss drugs the way we look at insulin or anti depressants. Drugs that allow our bodies to function as they should.

Movinghouseatlast · 12/11/2023 18:10

I started it mainly because I went to see a menopause specialist who prescribed me an artificial progesterone. I said that I was worried about additional cancer risks. She pointed out that the additional cancer risks of my weight far outweighed those of the progesterone!

I have lost 2 and a half stone. It's been slow due to the supply issues- I was on .5 pen for months and was only losing half a pound a week. Now I'm hoping to lose another stone as I can get the higher doses.

I'm worried about putting it back on. I've always eaten healthily, no disordered eating etc but my metabolism has changed since perimenopause and I put on 3 and a half stone eating the same and exercising the same. So I haven't got bad habits to change, I just need yo learn to eat 1200 calories a day to maintain. Very depressing. I think I will try staying on.25 for a while after I get to my goal.

BastardtheCat · 12/11/2023 18:13

Would love to try it.

Simply cannot afford it though.

Tailfeather · 25/11/2023 22:08

I ummed and ahed for 7 months, and then started 6 weeks ago and REALLY wish I'd started sooner. I'm a stone down and feeling great.

Emanresu9 · 02/12/2023 14:01

@Tailfeather wow. When you started it did you radically change your diet too? I’ve ordered my first batch and waiting for it to arrive.

Tailfeather · 02/12/2023 18:44

@Emanresu9 Not yet, but it curbs your appetite, so I'm eating much smaller portions and not interested in snacking.
