lost a stone in my 50s...it's possible.

I was on here under a different name about 3 months ago getting some inspiration for weight loss.

Well, I've lost a stone now, slowly, but I have. Another 1.5 to go...but you know it's going in the right direction finally. I was always slim till menopause hit. So this has been hard.

And...folks...it's boiled down to eating less, eating more veg and moving more.

It's been pretty easy though.

I've cut out snacking almost completely, if I do it's a banana or an apple. I'm not drinking in the week unless there's a reason for it. Didn't drink a lot in the week but could go through a bottle of wine over 5 days.

Eating breakfast lunch and dinner.

And - though I don't think this has been a big part of it, got off my arse to go to the gym 2/3 times a week.

Congrats OP! That’s something to be properly proud of!

OldKingCole · 19/10/2023 12:20

Well done you!
I definitely think it’s an adjustment we need as we get older - we definitely don’t need as many calories every day!

Pancakepipsqueak · 19/10/2023 12:20

Well done OP!! Sounds like you’ve done it steady and healthily which is always how you keep it off too.

BankruptedByBirds · 19/10/2023 12:21

That's really encouraging and good to hear. Well done Flowers

JaxiiTaxii · 19/10/2023 12:36

Well done OP.

Yup, sadly no shortcuts to weight loss.

I know you feel the exercise isn't necessarily helping the weight, but be assured it will be delivering benefits for your heart, bones and overall function which are invaluable.

Nice one. 👍

VirusSchmirus · 19/10/2023 12:56

That's fantastic, well done you! I am also post-meno and found the pounds had crept on. Managed to lose 6 pounds so far since summer by doing exactly the same. It is possible although VERY depressing when I think about the amount of food I used to pack away in my twenties without a care in the world!

BigDahliaFan · 19/10/2023 13:37

Yes, exactly, I used to eat all sorts and it made no difference at all. I was one of 'those' people who could eat anything.

Well done you. I am the same age and have been told that my cholesterol is high so I am trying to lose preferably 3 stone, but would be content with 1.5 stones off. Have cut out booze completely, need to totally overhaul my diet.

IncognitoMam · 19/10/2023 23:15

Well done.
I'm post meno and could do with a stone or 2 off. I'm eating less and moving more. My stomach has gone down and arms are smaller. Just not much movement on the scales. But I look trimmer.
Slowly does it.

I'm concentrating on upper body strength as am on my feet a fair bit and walk a good amount. I've been doing yoga for upper body strength with Adrienne. It takes about 10 minutes and is basically plank press ups and stretching. Really good and works.

OriginalFloorboards · 19/10/2023 23:17

Excellent. It’s the snacking at night that I seem to be rubbish at, particularly chocolate.

SoundTheSirens · 19/10/2023 23:20

Well done OP! I’m menopausal and have lost around a stone since the start of the year. I want to lose another 7-8lbs but I’ve plateaued and am yo-yo-ing a bit. I’ve cut down on carbs, especially processed sugar, as they’re my weight downfall but blimey these last few pounds are hard going!

pizzaHeart · 19/10/2023 23:27

Wow OP, well done!
Can I ask what changes have you done in your diet/ what diet you followed? And what do you do at the gym?

@OriginalFloorboards you are not alone

Ovaltiner · 21/10/2023 20:51

Well done, @BigDahliaFan and thank you for taking the time to post here. I'm 50, about 1.5 stone more than I'd like (need 5lbs off to get to a healthy BMI) and keep starting various things and then giving up after a couple of weeks.

You have inspired me to try again!

bookmarket · 04/11/2023 10:29

Well done. This is inspiring. Are you able to share what your typical breakfast and lunch is? I'm okay with dinners but struggle with breakfast and lunch ideas. I work mostly from home so it's easy to prep things if I have a plan.

DRS1970 · 04/11/2023 10:33

I lost a stone once. But I quickly found it again. Doesn't help having a gravel drive perhaps.

Angrycat2768 · 04/11/2023 10:35

Well done! I need to do the same. I had a target to lose 2 stone before I was 50, and missed it because I just wasnt motivated enough to stick to anything. Did you count calories/ carbs or did you simply not snack? Snacking is my downfall. I eat home cooked meals the majority of the time- healthy, lots of vegetables, but just cannot resist sweet stuff and pastries on top.

Don't buy them. Just have healthy snacks in. If you want a bit of a crunchy treat buy the lower calorie baked crisps. Apples are a nice treat. A small piece of cheese and a few healthy crackers. And drink lots of water.

My stomach is going down. I've been batch cooking soup, freezing it and defrost that when I get peckish. Helps I love veg. Cabbage soup is nice if there's plenty of other veggies and chickpeas. And tinned tomatoes.

I had porridge yesterday morning with a bit of honey. I wasn't hungry until dinner. Ate again at 7pm. I didn't even want a snack. I made the porridge with whole fat milk.

Well done! I'm going to keep popping over here for inspiration.
I've gained weight (laziness, snacking & menopause) but having had a bit of a revelation when I stood on some bathroom scales about 2 months ago have cut a lot of the crap.
I'm mid 50s and have lost a stone now but like OP that's only part of the journey.
As I'm short, the extra weight really shows and it's been affecting my joints so now I am putting a bit less stress on them, I need to exercise.

useitorlose · 04/11/2023 11:19

I'm 55 and have lost 17lbs since mid-July. I already didn't drink alcohol and was pretty active, it was my food intake that was the problem. I signed up for Slimming World online and it's been a game changer for me. The loss is slow and steady and I did my initial three months then signed up for another six - I still have 10-12 pounds I would like to lose before I start maintaining.

There's some fab YouTube videos. You can start with 5 or 10 minutes and work up. Tbh I rarely get above 15 but I enjoy walking. I tend to do vids for upper strength or stomach toning.

rookiemere · 04/11/2023 11:26

I've lost about 12lb since February, bringing me to an almost normal BMI, I'm 53.

I started out cutting all carbs and sugar. I've pretty much kept to the no sugar- if I fancy a sweet treat I'll have a chocolate protein mousse or a chocolate Bounce bar - and I will have small amounts of carbs sometimes but avoid bread and cakes.

I did it primarily for health reasons but it's great to fit into clothes I've not worn for years.

rookiemere · 04/11/2023 11:27

I actually do less exercise now than I used to.
I did inefficient exercise like a zumba class with a friend. Now I do a lot of walking and try to do a couple of weights sessions a week, plus parkrun which I can't bear to give up.

gingercat02 · 04/11/2023 11:36

I've done very similar OP. I'm 54.
Was 77kg in May now 73kg, so nearly 9lbs in 6 months.
Eating less, low carb lunches, using my fitness pal and 2 classes a week, always pilates and something else.
It's not massive loss, but it has got me back to a BMI under 25, and all my clothes fit better.
In the long run, I would like to be around 70kg BMI under 23

burnoutbabe · 04/11/2023 11:39

I have lost around a stone since being 50. I got invisiline braces and so I don't snack between meals. (I could but it would involve removing brace, eating, then cleaning teeth again before re-Inserting!)

Apart from that I eat normal meals.
