To weigh or go by clothes?

Follow up thread to my other weightloss thread I done yesterday.
When I dieted previously never sure whether to weigh myself or go by clothes .
When I weigh and go down really happy but if scale dial ain't moving for week or even goes up a pound I am so demoralised all of a sudden but appreciate weighing oneself a lot more accurate overall. It can be hard even though I know there are fluctuations.
Currently size16 tight! And 14st 1lb
And have been anything from 8 to 20 in my life😬
What does everyone else recommend?

I weigh but also take measurements (and by the feel of my clothes).
I go by my monthly weight loss rather than weekly, because I can fluctuate quite a lot. And I do my measurements every 6-8 weeks.
if I’d relied on weekly weigh ins alone I’d probably have given up.

Weigh yourself everyday and take the emotion out of it. Fluctuations in salt, hydration, stress and the food you've eaten can make a few pounds difference up or down so weigh more often and look at a trend rather than a single snapshot in time.

Fitting into smaller sized clothes you’ve grown out of is a much better feeling than looking at a number on a scale. I use both but I don’t weigh every day. Maybe every 3 days or so. I find it affects my mood so I’d rather be in ignorant bliss.

That's the trouble I can't take emotions out of it. Wish I could.
I think what I will do is weigh less often rather than every day.

I have to weigh myself or else I just won’t be strict enough. I’ve learned the hard way - I gained more than a stone and didn’t even really notice it in my clothes Shock

That is so true as can kid yourself.
I usually weigh every day but will make it once a week so not so obsessed

The danger of weighing once a week is that you might happen to do your first recording on a day when you are lighter (just had a poo, less water etc) and then your second a week later on a heavier day so you don't notice any weight change and then get demoralised.

I like scales which automatically link to your phone so you can hop on them first think in the morning every day (without necessarily reading them) and then get a plot of your weight over time.

I would also measure waist size (at the narrowest point, maybe weekly) first thing in the morning as this is a good measure of fat loss.

Think about it for second, daily weight fluctuations are impossible to avoid. Say you weigh yourself tomorrow bang on 14 stone and then you follow the plan in a defecit with the aim of losing a pound a week, come back next month and weigh yourself again and it's 14 stone.

It means one of two things, you're either not in a defecit and the plan is wrong or you have lost fat but you don't really know because it's a weight fluctuation and you haven't any data to back this up. Daily weight changes are totally normal. Without the more frequent checks how do you know which is true?

If it's the former you'd have picked up on the scale not budging way way sooner and if it's the latter it doesn't matter as you know by tomorrow things will be back to normal again and you have the databank to see the weight loss already.

One thing I do to take the emotion out of it is to weigh in KG. My natural understanding of my weight is in stones and lb, by weighing in kilos it is really just a number and doesn't give you that little emotional jolt. Even seeing the number go up slightly bothers me less. Could be worth trying that?

koalaknickers · 17/10/2023 15:11

I weigh every two months - I know! I thought I could never wait that long...

If you are following your diet plan, it MUST be working. At the two month mark you will see weight loss and it will be real fat loss.

I don't go by clothes personally because when I was much bigger I had clothes in everything from Sizes 10 to 22, depending on garment type and materials and branding.

I weigh every day. I didn’t like it when I stood on the scales and didn’t lose or added a pound. Made me stop. But when I weigh everyday I can see the ups and downs. Wouldn’t go back to every week again. Better for my mental health this way
