Hi everyone

I don't want everyone to think i'm just delusional, but has anyone else had a shocking BMI even though they're not carrying alot of excess weight?

I'm 5'9 and a size 14. I would call myself mid size and am happy with the shape i'm in. I feel healthy and don't hate the way I look.

I just feel like regardless of my dress size past and present, i have always been heavy and my BMI is shocking. I eat and live healthily although i am hindered by having a desk job.

Just me? 😂

How much do you weigh? Or why is your BMI shocking?

toomanyleggings · 02/10/2023 13:53

I’m 5ft 9 and my bmi is just in the overweight 25.6. I feel very heavy. You may be carrying it differently to me though. I’d love to feel body confident

I don't want torn apart posting the measurements. It's just, i in no way look obese.

Perhaps it's how we carry it

It can be a shock the first time you check your BMI. I think it’s because it is a medical assessment about what is best for our bodies health wise rather than an aesthetic or socially based measurement.

In medical terms ‘excess fat’ is overweight, whereas of course people continue to look great, be healthy etc with a wide spectrum of fat covering.

Abergale · 02/10/2023 14:27

there will always be exceptions to the rule but I think if you are size 14 you are likely to be and look overweight and have just got a wonky baseline.

That's true but I think i'd know if i was carrying excess fat. I'm not the slimmest person in the world but i'm far from obese.

I am also 5'9". I carry my weight on my bottom half, and also didn't look obese, not with clothes on, anyway. With clothes off, I looked overweight, but again not obese. But I was. And I'm definitely carrying excess fat, as my thighs and buttocks show.

ModeWeasel · 02/10/2023 19:44

I had a similar reaction to you OP. But the fact is that unless you are a very muscly athlete if your/our BMI is in the obese category than you or I are medically defined as obese and have all the medical risks associated with that until we lose the weight.

ModeWeasel · 02/10/2023 19:46

You could check some other health measures like waist to height or waist to hip ratios.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/10/2023 19:52

What do you think obese looks like?

A lot of people seem to think it’s people who weigh 40 stone on those American programmes. That’s morbid obesity.

Obese is a medical term, it’s not a look, because as you say everyone carries their fat differently and there’s a wide variety of body shapes.

Checking your height/waist measurement which is a good indicator.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 02/10/2023 20:10

My BMI is well within the healthy range and I'm usually a size 10, but I feel flabby and horrible and want to weigh less. I wish I had the OP's self-confidence!

mynameiscalypso · 02/10/2023 20:13

I'm a couple of inches shorter but when I was a size 12, I was right on the borderline between overweight and obese.

Disturbia81 · 02/10/2023 20:24

BMI doesn't take shape and skeleton width into consideration. Everyone is always surprised how much I weigh even though I look slim with bony aspects of me.
I have wide shoulders and hips so weight hangs differently

Stokey · 02/10/2023 20:24

Isn't BMI a flawed way of measuring weight? I think it doesn't take into account muscle density and ethnicity.

lljkk · 02/10/2023 20:31

Need to declare your numbers OP.
BMI bashers will be along any moment now.

Do you want to be stronger, fitter, faster, curvier?

Graciebobcat · 06/10/2023 14:29

What's your waist measurement, OP?

Where you carry the weight is important. My BMI is 27.6 but my height to waist ratio is in the healthy range. I'm still wanting to lose weight though to get down to BMI 24 but I will look pretty lean then and will probably be a size 10.
