If you could spend about £200 a month on attempting to lose weight...

..what would you spend it on?

Hoping to lose 1.5 stone. Currently a member of a council gym which has decent kit, range of classes etc, costs £35 a month. Go 1-2 / week which probs isn't enough but struggle to find time or motivation to go more.

Diet is ok, eat fairly healthy food but weakness for wine and snacks...

Could afford a personal trainer 1x / week but I'm not sure just exercising for an hour will make any real difference to my weight?

There's a lovely looking David Lloyd nearby which I've toyed with joining in the hope that the loveliness will motivate me to go more, but it's obviously £££

Just a bit stumped where best to direct my resources. Feel like I need someone to tell me what to do and hold me accountable. Is that a PT or a weight loss coach (does that exist?)

Any advice/suggestions v welcome! TIA Smile

For me, it would be some kind of meal prep service, so I've always got the right choices available and not resorting to lazy meals.

NancyJoan · 09/09/2023 18:32

Weight loss is mostly about food, not exercise. Change your diet and stick with your council gym. A PT session once a week will change the way you use your gym too

Same. One where you knew exactly how many calories you were eating each day.

I’ve lost one and a half stone in the last 8 weeks (including going on a cruise) and I did it by reducing carbs and buying myself a lot of really good quality protein and made sure my fridge was always stocked with lots of fruit and veg. I didn’t do any extra exercise as this makes me hungrier.
I have a sweet tooth so allowed myself one low calorie hot chocolate a day and made sure I had some nuts in if I was hungry between meals.
Could you for example limit yourself to one mini bottle of wine per week and get a healthier plan for the snacks you like?

PackBacker · 09/09/2023 18:43

How about trying Slimming World or weight watchers, not the online ones but one where you get weighed each week? They could be good if you need guidance.
You’re probably eating quite healthily but portions have crept up, think about all the calories you consume such as alcohol and sauces and dressings.

I've just spent £179 on a months supply of Wegovy....I know, a fool and his money and all that... but it works

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 09/09/2023 18:49

I lost 2 stones eating high protein/low carbohydrate. I am very undisciplined (food/wine etc.).
Walk - it's free.
Swim.
Lots of free exercise videos available online.
Save your £200 every month - buy yourself something nice. Or put towards a holiday.
In the right frame of mind it's doable.
Good Luck

I bought myself something nice or did a nice activity every time I lost quarter of a stone and look forward to buying some new Autumn clothes when the weather cools down.

Riverlee · 09/09/2023 18:57

i’d buy getter quality fruit, salad, veg, etc as I’d be more likely to eat it then.

Thisismynewusername1 · 09/09/2023 19:00

I spent in on a diet plan. Worth every penny.

lost 25 lbs in the 3 months I was on it. Reset my eating and I have been able to keep eating in that pattern and have lost a further 15 lbs- more slowly, but it is still coming off.

Go for a PT and stick with the council gym. Fancy gyms are pointless as long as you’re taught to use weights/equipment correctly at a simpler gym.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 09/09/2023 19:08

My 'drugs' have not led me to gain any back once I stopped or took a break..... think that's a bit of a myth

You do absolutely have to change lifestyle though. In my case I needed to lose the weight to increase fitness levels for a new job!

Phos · 09/09/2023 19:09

Honestly I love the David Lloyd gyms and I was in the best shape of my life when I lived near enough to go to one. Hands down the winner for me!

@Thisismynewusername1 what plan did you use? How did you choose it?

Angrycat2768 · 09/09/2023 19:13

Apparently the Zoe programme is very good. It's personalised to you. It's too expensive for me but I'd do it if I has £200 a month.

CompaniesHouse · 09/09/2023 19:13

I have spent about £200 a month losing weight and it was in meal delivery services like Pp said. Total game changer for me. Reset my appetite, reset what type of foods I naturally crave etc. never felt better and not just for weight loss, whole body felt good. And then I walk for free (I’m a shit jogger but if you’re an exerciser you could run not walk!).

MoxieFox · 09/09/2023 19:18

Go with the personal trainer. They are not a workout buddy. What they do is go over your history of injuries, physical limitations and goals and come up with a personalised exercise routine that you then do when you go to the gym by yourself 2-3x a week. You then check in with them once or twice a month for weigh in, adjusting the exercise routine and so on. By weigh in I mean measuring muscle mass gain, fat loss, waist circumference- not the number of kg on the scale.

It’s well worth it. I’d also see a nutritionist as well because sustained weight loss is a lifestyle change and often you need to adjust your nutrition and your exercise in a way that lasts.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/09/2023 19:19

For me I pay for a decent gym that I like going to- classes work best for me, push me without 1;2:1 pressure of a PT.
nice work out clothes help too.
I would also, with spare money, buy healthy M&S food to make it more enjoyable.

llamadrama16 · 09/09/2023 19:19

Reformer Pilates. I've done hard core exercise before in gyms, with PTs and nothing changed my body like pilates did.

Bananas1350 · 09/09/2023 19:25

Food food food. U cannot out run a bad diet. To loose weight and re set ur relationship with food. U need to stop the crisps and the wine. Or u will be forever in this circle of loosing weight. As when u stop and u then go back to ur original diet it’s the circle of hell.

after 15 years of doing this trust me on this.

LoserWinner · 09/09/2023 19:28

I’ve lost 5st without any costly aids, so if I needed to lose more, I’d exercise will-power, take the money for a few months and spend it on new clothes :-)
