Getting sexy back

I want to lose 50lb by May 2024.
Refuse to fill as bad about myself next summer as I did this summer. I want to be happy to wear a bikini on my May 2024 holiday.

1200 calories a day.
Couch to 5k
And as much cardio as I can manage.

Starting Monday.

Good luck. That’s quite a restrictive intake, but it will give quick results and should keep you motivated.

You're not going to stick to that so why even start. Small steps at a time! Sort your diet out first, why does the 1200 cal number get plucked out of thin? If you're 50 pounds overweight you can eat a LOT more and lose weight easily to start with anyway, literally no need to suffer and be miserable when you don't need to be.

my82my · 02/09/2023 17:45

I used a calorie deficit calculator and it said I needed to eat 1200 to lose 50lb by my holiday. Open to alternative suggestions though?

What is your calories intake now?

Around 2200. I've put on 50lb in 3 years.

I've lost 50 lbs since just before Christmas, I eat loads. No idea about calories as I follow SW. It needs to be sustainable and something you can stick at.

IrisBearded · 03/09/2023 14:26

Hi!

I've lost about 50lb in 8 months , so just wanted to add my thoughts.

I stick to about 1200kcal a day as I'm short and have lost 1-2lb each week. It's mainly unprocessed low sugar foods too.
I eat in an 8 hour ish window and 2 meals a day so I find it quite easy to stick to in the main. If I have an occasion or party to go to I don't worry about what I eat. I don't drink anymore as it helps with the exercise motivation to be sober.

I would recommend strength training though, it's been a game changer for me. I follow Caroline Girvan on YouTube. Muscles are good for the metabolism, even though mine are only small. I hardly do any cardio.

Good luck, it really is an amazing feeling to see progress. There's a thread on here called unexpected advantages of weight loss which is inspiring

I'd highly recommend Michael Mosley books, fast 800. I dropped a lot of weight in a short time and stuck to a similar way of eating for the last 2 years as I really enjoy it a feel so much better. I think the previous poster saying "your not going to stick to it" is very derogatory. If you really want to achieve this then of course you can do it.

It's not meant in a derogatory way at all. The steps she's outlined are all good but a very all or nothing mindset and that is never good for sustainability.

Also the low calorie intake is hard to stick with. Far better off eating as much as possible and doing as little as possible to lose the weight, there's plenty of time to drop down the calories and increase exercise once it gets harder! If you start with so little food and so much exercise when weight loss does stall and it will stall, Only option is to go even lower with food and increase exercise.

I know it's boring and not very sexy but the truth of it is the longer it takes to lose weight the more likely it is you'll keep it off longer term.

This just isn’t really accurate, as long as you are eating less than your daily expenditure you continue to loose weight, simply the more weight you lose, the less your expenditure becomes and as such , the loss slows.

so for example at 90kg your expenditure maybe 2400 a day, so on 1200 you’d be loosing over two pounds a week.

at 60 kg it would be say 1800 and you’d be loosing a point a week.

it’s never linear but on average that’s accurate.

very few people have expenture at 1200 a day. So telling people to eat more simply slows their weight loss for the initial phase of their journey

Thank you for all your responses, I joined another thread that someone else started but am going to stick with it.
I'll check out that book and someone else mentioned Caroline Girvan.. ouch!! But I'm doing it.
I lost 4lb last week,1200 calories is hard but I've managed (I went over one day by 104 calories) but just started again the next day. I'm determined to look good around the pool next year!

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 09/09/2023 09:32

1200 is such a random figure but gets quoted all the time. I'm short and lost over 2 stone eating 1500-1700 on average a day going from
BMI 26 to 21. Cutting down by 1000 calories a day is going to smack of deprivation and has to potential to wreck your diet. Come join us on the LOSE IT threads where the focus is on healthy sustainable change to both diet and lifestyle. If you have 50lb to lose there's no way you me tdee calculations are going to give you 1200 a day in order to lose.

Divebar2021 · 09/09/2023 09:43

where has 1200 calories come from? Is it a calorie tracking app? I’d check against this

https://www.jamessmithacademy.com/macro-calculator/

ive lost 2.5 stone on 1200 calories and had the personal trainer etc but honestly whacked it all back on again (and presumably the long term goal is to keep it off.?) My will power really only lasts about 3 months. My progress now is slower but feels more sustainable.
You definitely would be better with weight training rather than tons on cardio also. Good luck though …. We’re all on a journey

But why go so fast at an unsustainable rate and lose a quite a high percentage of muscle mass at the same time as fat?

Also 1200 will bring in diet fatigue really fucking quick I see this number on here all the time and I just don't get it. Hardly anyone got fat at a rate of 2 pounds a week! Every study shows the longer it takes to lose the more successful the participant is at keeping it off..

1200 reeks of a short term crash diet that will inevitably lead to failure and a rebound.

Divebar2021 · 09/09/2023 11:53

I do get it …. When you’re finally in the zone and you’re being strict with yourself you don’t want people telling you to eat more because you’re afraid that you’re going to let go of the reins and pile it all back on. You’re also impatient and why wait an extra six months. The likelihood is that you will let go of the reins because there’s only so long you can over ride your bodies need for the calories. ( I’m not talking about overeating or eating junk I just mean eating more). Christmas will come or a holiday or someone’s birthday. If you do carry on you need to be thinking about maintenance now because there are very few people in the world who will carry on weighing their food and logging calories with the same enthusiasm they started their weight loss with.
