How am I not losing weight?

My meals are

Breakfast - 40g plain porridge with semi skimmed milk, handfuls of berries and a small amount of nuts.

Lunch - chicken salad wholemeal roll or a salmon roll with a muller corner yoghurt

Dinner - Home made meal maybe a pasta dish, spag bol, roast, curry, stir fry, jacket potato. Never a big portion.

Generally no snacks at all unless maybe a piece of toast if I'm especially hungry. Maybe a couple of biscuits at the weekend but definitely not snacking on junk all the time.

Drinks only water or coffee with no sugar.

I'm brisk walking for an hour a day, working out twice a week squats, weights etc.

I only want to lose 4-5 pounds but it's not happening.

@AtomicBlondeRose I find if I eat lettuce etc, it gives me bad wind and a few toilet trips (to put it politely). So I try and eat what you've stated. Tomatoes, carrots etc.

But what height and weight are you? If you're already very lean those last few pounds will take long time to come off. Don't worry about the carb thing - it's nonsense. Be sure to weigh/measure your food raw, especially calorie dense things like nuts and pasta. Butter on bread etc also calories dense so needs accounting for - as do all snacks and milk in coffee etc

The carb thing really isn’t nonsense. I lost & kept off a significant amount of weight eating low carb. I’m also not pre-diabetic anymore.

@Ifwallscouldtalk if the yogurt is something like Greek yogurt with probiotics then definitely keep eating it. It is very very good for you! If it is muller light, then definitely drop it!

I do have plain full fat Greek yoghurt a lot but I do also have those muller bliss things, so whipped Greek flavoured yoghurt. I like those Oykos yoghurts too. Not muller lights.

I know some of the yogurts are sugary but it is really the only treat food I have. Hardly ever have crisp, cake, chocolate or anything like that.

@Ifwallscouldtalk I would definitely look at cutting the muller Yogurt or anything that is artificial. Those so called yogurts aren't really a yogurt. I'd stick to the Greek yogurt. I like the Yeo Valley ones (just my taste preference).

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 14/07/2023 10:57

You might need to seriously up your water intake. Which might also help you eat less. Sometimes that is all it takes. Worth a try?!

L1R876 · 14/07/2023 10:58

Definitely! I try and drink 3-4 litres a day @OrderOfTheKookaburra I find it helps me from snacking

L1R876 · 14/07/2023 10:59

@Ifwallscouldtalk I would view this as a diet and then you can re introduce "treats" once you've achieved your goal. Otherwise there's not much point in trying to lose, if you aren't willing to sacrifice some food!! Grin

TheShellBeach · 14/07/2023 11:03

My goal weight is 10 stone 7 lb.
I am 5 ft 3 in.

I think you're being unrealistic. I eat more than you do and I'm losing 3 lb. a week.

You're asking why you're not losing weight. I guessed before I opened this thread that you'd already be at a healthy weight, which you are.

You'll be on a permanent diet if you keep this up, which is miserable.

L1R876 · 14/07/2023 11:37

@TheShellBeach you have to eat less to get smaller. Hence, why a few have said cut this and that etc. you can't eat loads if you want to be slimmer. You can eat more when maintaining though!

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 14/07/2023 11:54

I think you need more protein. Instead of the porridge, have low fat greek yoghurt (real greek yoghurt not 'greek style') it's high in protein. Add the berries and nuts as you do with the oats. Walking is brilliant but add in some weight training too.

L1R876 · 14/07/2023 12:27

Protein stops me from feeling hungry. I find if I eat a tuna salad or eggs, I am not hungry in the afternoon. Especially when you get that "slump"

Exactly this.

Yes.
My point was that I an eating much more than the OP and am losing 3 lb a week.
This is because I actually need to lose weight. The OP doesn't. Her BMI is 21!

You don’t need to be counting calories and weighing everything. That’ll drive you insane. Just cut out the bread and pasta, increase veggies - we should be having at least ten different varieties a day (don’t increase fruit you’re doing great there), avoid toast and biscuits. Drink lots of water. You’ll soon lose 4lbs

I really don't get this. It's like saying checking your bank balance or reading your gas meter will drive you insane.

It's just data. Without it you are flying blind

She’s got 4lbs to lose. She really does not need to be weighing and then calculating everything that goes into her mouth. It’s a faff that’s really not necessary. Look at her menu. It’s very obvious. That’s all the data you need.

TheEdgeofFortyFive · 14/07/2023 16:06

Hard disagree. When you are that close to your goal you have to be super precise. Your body needs far far fewer calories at BMI 21 so there's little room for error.

I personally Wouldn't want to be below 21 but if that's the goal, then calorie counting, weighing and measuring are extremely useful.

I really agree. It is exactly just data. Keeping an eye on the ins and outs of your bank balance ensures you save/spend what you want/need. Calories in and out is the same. Saying that please ignore anything your watch says. Mine suggests I "burn" approx 2300 a day and I've been maintaining for a year now on 1900 a day (same height and weight as you) so clearly don't burn anything like that much

GoodVibesHere · 14/07/2023 16:30

How long have you been doing it for? It takes a few weeks for any weightloss (on the scales, at least) to kick in, for me. Literally sometimes five-six weeks before I begin to see results.

L1R876 · 15/07/2023 18:17

@GoodVibesHere it sure does.

There’s no such thing. You drink tap water, your liver detoxes for you.

AnnaNims · 20/07/2023 18:58

Detox water is a gimmick.

Drinking water is good, it can suppress your appetite and temporarily increase your metabolic rate. Detox water might be more palatable as it’s flavoured. So if that encourages you to drink more - great. Plus the body has a liver, kidneys, lungs, intestines and skin that do a marvellous job of detoxing. I don’t think a flavoured water can really compete.

L1R876 · 20/07/2023 19:00

They recommend drinking 2litres of water a day. I would say drink more. I always aim for a minimum of at least 3 litres. Plus tea/coffee etc. the more you drink, the more your body will detox etc.

lljkk · 20/07/2023 19:18

Does the fitbit know your current mass, age, sex?

This calculator says you'd maintain at that mass-age-sex on 1500/day, at an "inactive" level of activity. Fitbit saying 2000 is plausible if fairly active.
