Seem to be gaining weight, after diet success

I lost 4 and a bit stone last year and since the start of this year, I seem to be gaining weight. I was just over 13 stone and I got down to bang on 9 stone. I am 5ft6/7 ish.. I am currently 10stone 6 and lots of my clothes don't fit me. I am down to just a few outfits that I can wear.

I lost weight by reducing portion sizes, cutting out sugar, junk etc and walked everywhere. I have tried to identify where I am going wrong, but I can't seem to work it out.

It annoyed me the other day, cause I have some really nice light blue vintage Levi 501 jeans (which I bought for summer) and they don't even button up.

I am going to write down and weigh everything I eat and will update you.

So for breakfast I had muesli and Greek yogurt.

For lunch I had tuna and a salad bowl that I bought from the supermarket. It was just lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion. I added a boiled egg, some cress and also some pickled onions.

Not sure what I'm going to have for my evening meal. I think starting this thread is making think even more consciously about what I am actually eating!!

Keeping track of your habits to see if anything has slipped is sensible.

Look up your TDEE to see what you need to maintain at the current weight. Smaller bodies do need a smaller intake.

Do you exercise? Muscle mass helps boost your metabolism, and while you can't outrun a bad diet, exercise does make a difference in helping prevent a slight surplus of calories gradually building a lb here and a lb there. Gaining weight from muscle is a healthy thing, but it will look better than gaining weight from surplus fat.

It says that my BMR for 9 stone is 1339 and for maintenance is 1842.

I'm currently 10st6 and my BMR is 1430 and for maintenance is 1966.

Yes I did exercise. I walked everywhere. I did try and run, but it's not something I enjoyed.. maybe I could try again.

I am not any expert but isn’t muesli one of those hidden sugar situations, what I have found is that a lot of things you think are going to be good for you are not really and you have to actually measure out portion sizes, 30g is not very much

well done on your weight loss! This has happened to me in the past it’s so hard to sustain it - I am 5’5 and I can’t maintain lower than about 11st realistically now I am 42 without flogging myself with exercise and restricted diets. Is 9st the lowest weight for your height, or is there more of a middle ground that your body prefers to maintain at with less effort? I know it’s hard when you have bought all the clothes for the lower weight but I feel like weight for women is something you either have to work at forever and ever to stay 9st or find a balance to coast along at that takes less effort.

Well I have 45g as that's what the serving size is on the packet. It's a big contrast, compared to when I just used to fill my bowl up, without even measuring a portion.

Thanks :) I've never really been slim. Always heavier. And it's only since last year that I've actually reduced my weight.

I think you're right though. Maybe my body is saying I should weigh a bit more.

It definitely is one of those where you would have to work at it. I've obviously taken my eye of the ball and I've gone up a stone or so.

You may reach your lower weight goal... but may have to be on a permanent diet and monitor every thing. Which I might add, is something I clearly haven't done!!!!

I think it’s the reality of 2 things - either you invest the rest of your life to stay at 9st or you pick something more manageable.

I’ve chosen to stay at the top of the 25 section of BMI as my goal weight of 11st as then I think I will get the best of being not under such pressure and also something that’s realistic. Perhaps you can exercise more and get to something nearer 10st and see if it’s sustainable?

L1R876 · 07/07/2023 12:08

@Menora I am going to try and up the exercise. I walk a lot. But going to try and do a bit more.

I'm a wee bit shorter than you at just under 5ft6 and I looked pretty good at around 10st 4. 9 st seems low for your height and possibly 10-10st 7 is a better natural weight for you.

L1R876 · 07/07/2023 12:48

@rookiemere maybe :) but we all carry and look different even if we may weigh the same. Weight is an odd thing haha!!
