Omezpic for those who only have not so much to lose? Successful?

GemmaPearl97 · 21/06/2023 10:36

I am consistently 25lb overweight since having my daughter (18 months) & no matter what I cannot seem to lose it.
Is Omezpic only successful in those who have a lot to lose?

You could lose the weight with ozempic and very quickly. However it's not a particularly pleasant way to lose weight and you would probably regain quickly. It's not a medication to go on, lose weight and then go off.

I am not sure of the prescribing rules in the UK but you might also find that your BMI is not high enough to warrant a script.

Also the cost is painful.

waistchallenge · 23/06/2023 10:07

What's unpleasant about it? The big Ozempic threads are full of people posting about how pleased they are with their massive losses.

GottaGirlcrush · 23/06/2023 10:18

Also wondering what's 'unpleasant'

Have you had a bad experience?

Peridot1 · 23/06/2023 10:23

I’m no expert but Ozempic doesn’t work for everyone. It’s not designed to be used for losing small amounts of weight. It’s actually not a weight loss drug at all. It’s used to control blood sugar issues. The weight loss is a side effect. For those it works for.

it is also in very short supply at the moment and diabetics who have been prescribed it for blood sugar control are rightly being prioritised.

Saxenda is a similar drug and although there are currently supply issues with that too it’s not a drug aimed at diabetics and may work for you. It’s available through Superdrug and Boots and Asda I think.

Diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, sulphur burps, vomiting the list of unpleasant side effects is a long one. I saw some muppet on here claim that blindness is also a side effect today but that's a new one to me.

I'm on ozempic for diabetes and it has helped my blood glucose levels amazingly. I've lost weight as well but I seriously doubt I would have stuck it out if I were looking to lose a relatively small amount of weight.

Didn't work for me for weight loss (only a bit overweight) but it did control my blood sugar levels

Saxenda is same family of drugs and the drug itself is a diabetes drug - it is exact same drug as victoza a diabetes medication by the same manufacturer - saxenda is just the brand name for the packaged up weight loss version of a drug that was originally and is mainly a diabetes drug

Same as wegovy is for ozempic

Peridot1 · 23/06/2023 13:40

Thanks @Sotiredmjmmy. I must admit I get confused by all the different names. I wasn’t really aware that Saxenda was Victoza. Odd that it has been available for weight loss for a while whereas Ozempic isn’t. Although I know that’s probably because of the launch of Wegovy.

I also find it odd that Ozempic gets so much more press than Saxenda.

If you're addicted to food (difficulty controlling cravings, portion sizes etc) your tendency to overeat is lifelong.
this medication is meant to be taken lifelong.
it’s known to have serious rebound effects when stopped, you gain back weight plus more.
because of the known difficulty once stopped I’m saying no.

38% of the world population could theoretically all be “hooked” on a drug.
a very dystopian vision.

Some diabetics are struggling to even get their prescriptions atm.

Yeah but is it? I think it's too early to say. I've taken blood pressure medication and thyroid replacement. Plenty of people take statins daily etc I don't think many people would think that was dystopian. Maybe not wegovy and the other ones available right now but their descendants

tobee · 23/06/2023 23:32

y to say. I've taken blood pressure medication and thyroid replacement for years*
