Finally forced myself to face what my mirror, clothes, feelings, body, mother and partner have all been telling me. I am obese.

Made myself fish out the dusty scales this morning, and get on. 15 stone 6lbs at 5'8" is firmly on the obese result. And at 60, well post monopause, this is not going to continue.

I've made a chart in my nice notebook and I'm only going to use the scales once a week.

I started a new job in September which is basically sat in front of a computer all day.

It's the little habits that have to change. I like a routine and unfortunately mine involves often getting the bus in, cappuccino and pastry for the half hour before work, sit typing and Teamsing til lunch, which is often a meal deal including crisps or a bagette and some kind of cookie and juice, more typing and talking, then usually walk home (sometimes bus), dinner with partner generally with biscuits or cake in there somewhere. We are very similar and he is also worried about his weight.

We don't drink much or eat meat, or do takeaways. We do eat salad, veggies and fruit, cheese, fish and eggs.

Habit change must include

Walk not bus both ways
Coffee but no cake
Get up and walk around during the day
More water
Salad and fruit not crisps and cookies at lunch
Agree to step away from the sweet stuff in the evenings.

I'm trying to find exercise classes and it's surprisingly hard.

Must be evenings and weekends - so much happens during work hours!

Must be suitable for 60+ and large ladies who have not done anything much in years, not since Joe Wick's in lockdown, so a gentle start for now.

Can't be doing with treadmills, little trampolines, weight setups - machines in general. Prefer not to be attached to a machine, liked exercising with others, little handweights ok.

I've seen a hula hoop thing advertised one where you swing a weight round a waist hoop that you can make smaller as you lose weight, looks interesting.

Dance type things would be good - I did stage combat way back when, loved it.

https://www.youtube.com/c/fabulous50s - when I restarted exercising I started with this woman - lots of low impact beginner exercises.

Congrats on all the changes you're making and your loss so far OP!

I'm in my 50s and one thing I've realised recently is that I just do not need an evening meal. I love breakfast and I look forward to lunch but had been aware for a while that the evening meal (planning what to have, shopping for it, cooking it and clearing up) has been a chore for years. When I had kids to cook for it was a bit non-negotiable but one of the compensations of this time of life is being able to step away from those old routines! I now look forward to clear evenings so I can go out for a walk or do a bit of gardening or whatever, without the meal dominating the time and making me feel heavy and lethargic afterwards.

It's definitely not for everyone and some people I've spoken to about it instantly know it wouldn't work for them, but it's been a bit of a revelation for me. I feel lighter and loads more energised.

BeforetheFlood · 11/07/2023 11:38

Should add that I don't do it every day - just Monday to Thursday usually, so I still enjoy a glass or two of wine and dinner at the weekend

TennisWithDeborah · 12/07/2023 20:10

Well done OP.

Did you get a weighted hoop in the end? Any good?

Twiglets1 · 13/07/2023 07:48

Good for you @JFDIYOLO

I’m on a diet too. Things that are helping me are finding a new activity I actually enjoy( Aquafit sessions one morning and one evening, full of larger ladies) and keeping healthy snacks in the fridge. Lots of protein snacks like chicken/ham/cheese but also tasty things like cherry tomatoes

JFDIYOLO · 13/07/2023 13:07

I didn't get the weighted hoop - I've seen several complaints about knockoffs falling apart so thought I'd read some more. I have found my little hand weights I got when I had frozen shoulder and I'm adding them to the stretches. Little by little. Also am on leave so we're doing a good walk every day and will try to keep that in the mix when I'm back. Facebook has suddkly started showing me ads for stretching and flexibility programmes … do the splits in 30 days kind of thing 🤣

Lots of helpful advice on this thread. Thanks everyone. Off to drink water.

AuraBora · 13/07/2023 14:33

Well done OP on the great start!
I've been watching what I eat and doing a lot more exercise for 6 weeks now and have got really into protein yoghurt, the Arla one (I get from Tescos) is really tasty and filling for breakfast.
Also there are all kind of protein mousses and similar e.g. Aldi (Ehrmann) chocolate one, which I find satisfy a sweet craving but are low sugar and not too bad calorie wise.

Can you put the £2 for your pastry in a jar every day? That will be £40 after a month which is basically free money to buy yourself a treat with. Even if you haven't lost weight, one less pastry a day will be good for your body and worth celebrating!

I love this idea. That's a real incentive. And have an americano with hot skimmed milk instead of a latte or cappuchino.

I find just small actions can make me feel healthier. Jumping jacks while waiting for the kettle to boil, squats while cleaning teeth etc.

Would your partner be up for an evening stroll to watch the sunset after dinner instead of TV slump?

Well done , I agree with little by little.

I lost 60lbs without dieting or calorie counting. All I did was walking and being more mindful.

Changing habits slowly until they stick is way better. I think you can still absolutely have the coffee and pastry, I'd also ignore people saying things like muesli is calorific. Getting fat is nothing to do with a specific food, is to do with habits and feelings around food.

Life is short! Eat what you like, move your body get fruit and veg in. The more you have in life that excites you the easier it is to focus on food.

JFDIYOLO · 13/07/2023 16:59

Everything we eat is calorific! We need calories to fuel what we do. My muesli is home made - the oats claim to be good for cholesterol, the nuts have protein (I'm veggie), the dried fruit has vitamins and fibre and no added sugar. And I feel full for ages.

OP posts:
crackofdoom · 13/07/2023 17:11

OK OP, you do you, but my muesli (Lidl fruit and nut- no added sugar) is 400 calories per 100g. And it's the nuts and dried fruit that add the calories- nuts are about 700 calories per 100g, off the top of my head. Now you try weighing out 100g, and see how little it actually is. I'm telling you this because muesli is one of my downfalls. "Mmmm...so delicious....I think I'll have another bowl....it doesn't matter because it's healthy! Can't think why the weight isn't dropping off...." 🤦‍♀️

JFDIYOLO · 13/07/2023 17:23

Thing is - I can't eat much of it because it's so filling. Now bread and butter on the other hand … or an entire packet of biscuits … these are my downfalls so aren't being bought!

The way this usually works though is more calories keep you fuller longer, so it all evens out throughout the day/week as you eat. As long as you're being honest with yourself about eating when you're hungry rather than doing so out of boredom, emotional reasons, etc.

Dieting is so silly because we end up avoiding food that's great for us just because it's calorific. Calorie counting has turned a lot of us into diet zombies: won't eat a handful of nuts but will eat a sugar free jelly etc.

Hubblebubble · 13/07/2023 17:28

This might sound daft, but weight loss isn't good food (porridge/muesli) vs bad food, but calories in vs calories out. So someone who has a croissant and a black coffee as their routine brekkie will be slimmer than someone who has a giant bowl of muesli and a milky coffee. To fill up on less calories I'd recommend upping your protein. So eggs (hard boiled/scrambled/omlette) or a small bowl of porrige with a scoop of protein powder.

Hubblebubble · 13/07/2023 17:30

Oops I can see someone else has already made pretty much the same point!
