No snacking after dinner! Who's in??

I'm not very good with diets and I really don't want to try one then have it fail. So this is my plan:

As soon I have finished dinner, I'm going to brush my teeth and make sure I don't eat anything else that evening. Simple.

Ok, it's not the most imaginative of plans, but here's why I think it will make a huge difference:

  1. My worst snacking is in the evening
  2. Eating chocolate in the evening makes me stay up late (caffeine) so I'm tired for work the next morning
  3. Am I right in thinking that eating right before bed makes you store more fat?

I am 5'8'' and since having kids I now weigh around 12 stone (size 12/14). I want to be a size 10 again!

I'm going to start small and do this for 1 week, starting today. If all goes well, then I'll aim for a month, then two months (should be a well-formed habit by then), then drop sugar.

If you're in, let's report back every evening right before we go to bed to confirm that we didn't eat anything after dinner.

So who's with me?? Come on!😁

Joining you from tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration, I am out of control with snacks, I can pretty much eat a whole packet of biscuits in one day and also 100g bar of chocolate. Not healthy.

summerisacoming · 14/06/2023 23:01

@technotstarnotechstar That would be standard snacking for me too, and mostly in the evening. Glad you'll be joining tomorrow.

Well, I did it - Day 2, done 🤗

Definitely taking this one day at a time... Goodnight

Day 1 of no evening snacking done, thanks @summerisacoming i need the accountability!

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 15/06/2023 07:15

Ok, I would like to try this too, although I am nervous that I won’t be able to stick to it. I have no problem with daytime snacking (not perfect but not habitual) but after a perfectly good dinner I end up eating junk for the rest of the evening. Wish me luck! It’s going to be hard today as I have had very little sleep which always makes me hungry.

checkerblock · 15/06/2023 07:16

I'm in OP.
I failed at the 800 a day diet, but still avoiding deserts. But doing well cooking from scratch to avoid the Ultra High Processed food which is designed to make us eat expensive high profit snacks.
I shall weigh on Saturday when I get up. That will be baseline.
At least the wine isn't processed. All the calories are natural🤔

Beginningless · 15/06/2023 07:18

I need to do this too, it’s usually one of the main parts of previous weight loss for me. For me it’s totally emotional eating - my craving is worse if it’s been stressful getting kids to bed and then I feel I deserve a treat. I’m in. Starting tonight!

DontBeGrossTammy · 15/06/2023 09:22

Good morning everyone, hope you're all well! I had a really long tiring day yesterday. I went for a 5 hrs hike (feet hurt today!), bought a bike for riding around the park, and ive joined the blue tits swimming group mentioned on another thread, so i feel incredibly active and virtuous! Anyhow, I ended up not eating all day then succumbing to the fish and chip shop at 9pm. (So not ideal, but I didn't snack after because I passed out ).

toddlermom1 · 15/06/2023 10:57

I'm in! I was talking to my partner last night about how I really want to stop late night snacking in attempt to shed some weightConfused

Badatmostthings · 15/06/2023 16:22

@summerisacoming I agree, the no snacking is enough to be dealing with and just having nothing is (to me) far easier than having a bit of something.
Not snacking in the evening does become habit and one thing that helped to flick a switch in my mind is to remember that those calories are doing nothing. They are going nowhere because you cannot possibly use that energy if you're asleep!

I have started to have a protein yogurt after my tea and this stops me snacking

This worked for me tonight, thanks for the tip!

summerisacoming · 15/06/2023 21:51

Day 3

I am struggling tonight.

I feel really hungry, which makes no sense because I ate a decent dinner at about 7pm. Is this what sugar cravings feel like? Is anyone else feeling this? Really tempted to have an orange, but I've done my teeth so it probably wouldn't even taste nice. Arrghh, I will resist! It's only day 3, fgs!

Day 2 done! Drank lots of water as it’s so hot but resisted the urge to eat the kids Haribos!

summerisacoming · 15/06/2023 22:03

@Beginningless
Completely agree with the wanting a reward for getting the kids to bed. I definitely have a spring in my step, as I say my last goodnight and close the kids' door, as I know there's chocolate waiting for me 😂

As a distraction I just gave the kitchen a thorough clean, but now I'm a bit lost and can't seem to find anything good to watch.

@Badatmostthings Yes, good way to think about it! And I'm sure chocolate keeps me up far later than I should be. Saying that, it took me ages to fall asleep last night because I felt so hungry. I probably need to start eating more protein for dinner.

@Lemoncurdslice Well done! 👏

Well done @summerisacoming ! I have not snacked this evening, despite really wanting to as it was a shit bedtime after a busy evening of activities so I was soooo grumpy coming down. If there had been any crisps in the house I would absolutely have had them but there was nothing I fancied so I’ve just been grumpily doom scrolling and about to go to bed! But generally I find it easier to keep a habit like this after a few days of it so let’s try. Thanks for the motivation.

Beaverbridge · 15/06/2023 23:07

A full week of not gulching down packets of crisps, bars of chocolate, kit kats in the evenings have given me a loss of 6 pounds!. Well chuffed. Given me more incentive to keep on going now!!.

Well done, that’s brilliant.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 16/06/2023 07:57

I succeeded with day one, although I decided after my prawn salad dinner (bloody hot last night) that I was allowed a dessert (Belgian sugar waffle with cup of tea) as that was still dinner, not snacking.

Flocider · 16/06/2023 08:02

I lost 8 stone a few years back and have maintained my weight since, have learnt which stuff helps keep me on track without feeling restrictive or like I'm on a lifelong diet.

One is snacking after dinner! It used to very much be a trigger for my binging, even if I'd had a big dinner and wasn't hungry I'd often just eat until I felt sick; crisps, chocolate, biscuits- all of it. This always felt worse when I'd been restricting food during the day.

I now make up 'snack boxes' and factor them into my daily calories (I don't actually calorie count as such now but I'm aware of what I'm consuming if that makes sense). It keeps me from binging and also its nice to know I have that allowance so if I see something I really want I don't spend ages craving it or whatever. I either have a bar of chocolate (a regular size one from a multipack) or if I'm hungrier have a small one like a freddo and add popcorn, fruit etc.

Snacking after dinner if you always do doesn't have to end in my opinion, just need to account for it and find what works.

Lemoncurdslice · 16/06/2023 08:12

Well done Beaverbridge!

DontBeGrossTammy · 16/06/2023 11:14

@Beaverbridge that's great! I'm using you as inspiration, I hope I can make it to a week. Also, bloody hell@Flocider 8 STONE? I can't even manage 8lbs, you're amazing.

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe · 16/06/2023 11:20

Can I join you guys please. Almost 40, menopausal and can’t shift one pound!

Beaverbridge · 16/06/2023 14:51

Thanks folks. I, ll admit one night I nearly crumbled and went for the crisps but resisted. Kept telling myself, it, ll be worth it. I, ll check in again next Thursday with update after weighing. Realise it wonted be as much. Good Luck everyone.

summerisacoming · 16/06/2023 22:16

Day 4

I've done it... just.

@Beaverbridge Almost crumbled tonight too. Kids took ages to go to bed (like pop-up pirates!) and now I'm having to do work again. This is when I most need to snack. But I've resisted - hooray!

@AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMe Yes, please do. Let's all make it to one week, at least. But I've got 1 month in my sights!
