Lost a lot of weight but thighs and stomach still 'fat'

I have gone from 11st 4 to 7st 4.

I am 5ft 2.

My inner thighs still touch and my stomach is still very 'there' (can't wear tight clothing.)

This is really depressing me to the point I'm still trying to lose more weight.

Apart from liposuction and a tummy tuck, is there anything else I can do here?

Some people just naturally carry fat in different areas of the body. I carry a lot of fat in my thighs and hips and there isn't a way to spot-reduce fat.

The best thing to do might be to start using weights to create more muscle and tone in these areas so you get less of the "skinny-fat" look.

Obels · 08/06/2023 16:24

It's not all about cardio and losing fat, those slim toned figures require a good muscle base.

Yes I think I'm going to have to do some weight training but have no idea where to even begin!!

Surely that is about the right weight for your height? I would say that you need to exercise now to tone and build muscle, not lose more weight necessarily. I am 5ft and about the same weight but my stomach muscles are rubbish after two kids - only thing that helps is crunches etc.

I have no idea, I haven't been this weight/size since I was a teen! Also have two children. Youngest is 2.

Your inner thighs may always touch, not everyone is physically able to have a 'thigh gap' see below extract from Womens Health magazine.

What causes a thigh gap?
'Even typically slim people may not have a natural thigh gap,' says GP, Dr Ross Perry, medical director of Cosmedicss_. 'If they have higher sitting adductors [the group of muscles on the inside of your thigh] and an alternative pelvic bone shape.'
'This is because it's generally not only down to very little body fat but also the width of the hips compared to the length of the femoral head [a bone at the top of the thigh]. Predominantly, it will be down to genetics, bone structure and amount of body fat on the person.'

You don't need to lose weight. It would be interesting for you to find out your body fat percentage though, because it could be that you don't have much muscle and have proportionally high fat for your weight?

Focus on toning. Lunges and squats for legs, core work for stomach. I've managed to build a nice amount of muscle just by doing a once weekly kettle bells or pump class. Now I'm stronger and my muscles ache for less time, I'm doing twice a week. But that seems to be plenty to see a noticeable difference.

I went to a podiatrist recently and he told me about the Q angle. Which is basically the angle between your hip and knee. Mine is wider than normal so my thighs don't meet at all, even at the very top. I'm lower end of healthy BMI but would still have a thigh gap even if I was bigger. So I assume it will be the reverse for some people - no matter how thin they are, their thighs will touch? Maybe have a Google and see if it makes sense, I am probably explaining it badly!

You are tiny at that weight. I am the same height and was quite ill for a while, going down to 6 stone 7. And you know what? My thighs and tummy were still there! I am 8 stone now and quite pear shaped, it is just my body type.
Can you do some exercise to tone up generally? No guarantees on the wobbly bits (sadly) but it would give you a positive goal rather than focusing so much on your weight.

CreamTeaThievery · 08/06/2023 16:52

I'm the same height as you and always have a funny, doesn't matter what I weigh sadly, that's my shape.

How would I find that out?

My gym has scales that tell you your body composition. Some larger Boots have them too. Probably not 100% accurate, but a good indicator. And then you can go back and measure again after building muscle for a couple of months. Your bodyweight might increase, but you should see your body fat decrease.

astronuts · 08/06/2023 18:25

@BlackFlyChardonnay I do have "smart" scales at home but doubt they are accurate!
