Do water fasts work ? Shedding lbs in few weeks

I've been watching people on YouTube doing water fasts.
Drinking nothing but water for 24/48 hrs claiming they lost like 4 lbs in one day or 7lbs at end of fast.
Is that legit? How can you lose that much weight in a few days ? I don't see how the body can do it. If they are drinking lots of water surely they aren't losing water weight ?

Anyway have my surgery weight in on 15th June and still have 5lbs to lose 🙃 I'm guessing it's not possible

As I understand it, if you are retaining water then drinking more helps you to flush it out. Counter intuitive, but I think sometimes the body can retain in response to dehydration (e.g. salty food) and introducing more allows it to 'let go'.

This may all be nutribollocks though, so happy to be corrected.

In 24 hours it will likely be water retention. Maybe look at 800 kcal fasts.

You could possibly lose 5lb by 15th June for your surgery weigh in by going on the fast-800 diet (low carb and low calorie) and upping your water to around 2lts a day.

You will probably be hungry and peeing like a racehorse but you could hit the number you need as long as you are rigid in sticking to the diet.

It will likely all go back on as soon as you start eating carbs again unless you stick to a long term diet, not as rigid as fast 800, but eating less than you need to maintain your weight. You can figure out that number by using a TDEE calculator.

It’s glycogen storage and water loss. Not fat loss. But if you’re just after a loss on the scales it will work.

FatGirlSwim · 05/06/2023 21:01

I mean loss of stored glycogen
