Losing 'water weight'

I'm a personal trainer, and often hear people talk about diets, saying they've lost weight, but it's 'only water weight'.

My question is, why isn't that a good thing? People look less puffy, you can see more muscle definition, you're not bloated. Why is it talked down? If we could all shed our excess water, we'd all look better, wouldn't we? And feel better?

Are you for real? As in a real personal trainer ?

Water weight is lost in ketogenic diets because glycogen is bound with water molecules. The second you start eating carbs again , glycogen is replenished and with it the water.
It is not " excess" water.
Water is also not metabolically unhealthy. People will not reverser their diabetes type 2 or lower their blood pressure or lower their risk of cancer and dementia by losing water.

The amount of water loss is also limited to the beginning of keto diets and will fade with time.

Whole bunch of assumptions there, @Maraschina

I was asking for people's opinions, not a scientific breakdown, but thanks for the patronising lesson.

Are you for real?

I have no idea,my friend always goes on about it too. As far as I'm concerned if the scales move in the right direction then I'm happy!

Water weight loss is only really in the first few weeks of any serious diet though and I suppose people are just being realistic with themselves that they wont have started real fat loss in that first week of heavy losses

However what I always say to myself is that its 5lbs off my joints and feet, 5lbs less Im carrying round so I agree it shouldnt be talked down.

Equally of course water weight gain after holidays shouldnt be taken too seriously.

Not sure that's ideal either; you might lose too much water, or lean muscle mass, and retain all your 'unhealthy' fat. I'm just not sure why people on carb heavy diets don't want to lose the excess water that's stored with the excess sugar in their bodies.

Why do you call it excess water? Lean people who eat carbs have no issues with the water bound to their glycogen .

I am curious, what dietary advice do you give to your clients?

I have no idea how to not lose water . I eat healthily and lose weight. How do you know what's water and what's not?

They're probably not struggling with excess carbs either. Most overweight people are.

I'm another person who loves healthy carbs and have a tendency to loose too much weight when I drop them. I am slim to begin with though and have never dieted. My issue is IBS and the my oversensitive gut, which destroys me if I eat too many legumes or very high fibre. Simple healthy carbs certainly never bloat me. Moderation works best.

I have wondered about water weight and meno, though, since friends have mentioned this through the years. I do know that it has altered my IBS for the worse so have had to re-jig my meals a bit to ease it.

Watchkeys · 02/06/2023 20:49

Just to be clear, which I wasn't, I'm talking about people who are trying to lose weight, rather than 'people who eat carbs'.
