Confession: Ozempic and I am 60kg

I wanted to make a concession on here today (changed username) and hopefully someone might have similar experience. I know I am not overweight I am 5'7 and 60-62kg depends on my period cycle. But I've put on 5kg over the last 2 years and getting really frustrated I cannot lose it. I eat extremely clean and I walk / exercise moderate.

I have started Ozempic a few month ago, and I am frustrated I cannot lose weight and have read/heard a lot of celebrities are using Ozempic to help them to slim down. Of course in UK it is a bit more difficult to buy Ozempic than the US but I've managed to get my hands on them.

Update nearly 2month in I haven't lost any weight.

For all the side effects I had I just don't know if this is worth it any more.

Currently on .5mg and I don't know if I should be going on higher dose to see if it does work ? Anyone got any experience of trying to lose weight on Ozempic but not above certain recommended BMI?

Please don't put me down :( I know this is quite bad but I've been suffering from eating disorder and was bulimic for years in my 20s so this topic is a bit triggering.

Why are people suggesting that the OP needs tips to how to lose weight? Her BMI is 20.

I understand that it’s hard to reconcile yourself to being bigger albeit a few kg bigger than you were before but it’s such an unhealthy mindset.

I’ve recently recovered from being very ill. A side effect of which was that my BMI dropped into underweight. I looked incredibly thin but not dissimilar to lots of people we see in the media. However, that’s not healthy. Our bodies need some fat to function.

OP please address this with therapy and not fad diets and drugs.

BungleandGeorge · 04/05/2023 10:46

I’m glad you’ve found a therapist, it sounds like things are really tough and you have a lot of baggage from childhood to unpick. Have you managed to tell the therapist that you’re taking this medication?

Re. perimenopause. There is no blood test for this as one's hormone levels fluctuate throughout the day. Perimenopause is based entirely on symptoms, and one's periods don't always change. Also, high cortisol levels and periemenopause go hand in hand, so I would familiarise yourself with them because it's likely that if you're not losing weight this is what's going on. Maybe best you pause Ozempic and go see a women's health specialist.

I don't like the shape I am in when lifting weights. No offense to all the strong ladies it's amazing what we can do with our body.

Tbh, at this point in your life, weight training is the best thing you can do for yourself. Come menopause, you will be thankful if you already have decent muscle in place because being skinny fat (which it sounds like you are now), is the worst thing. Also, you're in your 40s now, what used to work re. diet and exercise is now largely redundant. Plus, and most pertinently, your body changes full stop.

Having read through all your posts, I think spending money on a therapist would be far more beneficial than spending it on Ozempic. I say this with great kindness. You only have one body and one self, you need to make peace with who you are now and learn to love yourself.

late 80s but yes getting on a bit. I did a hormone blood test they said I got high cortisol (due to my job I guess) and am not showing signs of perimenopause. I did think I have that first!

If you have high cortisol this needs proper investigation- referral to an endocrinologist and tests for cushings. I am the opposite - I have Addisons disease.

Oh thank you for this post! That's very interesting. I will definitely do some research on this. I didn't realise that and the person who explained my blood test didn't link these two things together.

She weighs more than you do but I would hardly call her body unattractive 😂 maybe slightly muscular thighs but you would have to train uber hard to get that muscle as a woman.

I completely get that. But I don’t want my legs like that and that’s just a personal preference.

Great, and really pleased this has been useful to you.

I come from a similar place to you. Was always very slim (without exercising or watching what I ate) until I suddenly gained over 10 kilos within a matter of months. I tried dieting and exercising, so much exercise, mostly HIIT and spinning and actually continued to gain weight. I had other seemingly disparate issue that I pieced together as perimenopause. My GP was useless. He said no, your periods are still regular. He also ran bloods, and again said no. I later found out that he hadn't even read them properly and had failed to notice they indicated premature ovarian failure. So yes, for me, seeing a women's health specialist was key. She was the one who explained about my high cortisol levels and why they were making it harder to lose weight. One she put me on HRT, the weight came off. But, I was also weight lifting 3 times a week too. I did not bulk out as a result of weight lifting and now fit back into all my old clothes. I do weigh more now, but because it's muscle, am leaner. And as I'm no longer skinny fat, healthier too

I won't lie, I found it all really hard, Soul-destroying even at one point. Even now, I can't get my head round the fact the scales are higher than they used to be. But, my old clothes fit me again and more importantly, I feel like myself again.

I wanted to add one thing about Ozempic

There are obese and/or diabetics who use it and don't lose either. And at the medication's core, it's not meant for someone like you. Your perceived failure with Ozempic isn't a failure at all.

Anyway, good luck with everything. You can work this out, but you need to put the work in. Ozempic isn't the answer.

abcde123456878 · 04/05/2023 11:07

Yeah definitely will go to a specialist who can look at this blood test again!

I am just confused like I haven’t done anything different recently!

I have spent my life getting a lot of investment pieces clothing wise yes so that’s also the issue now I don’t fit in them I am getting really annoyed with myself. I hate appearing in any photos and my partner wants to take photos of me I made him delete them.

Unless OP tracks macros/does a body recomposition programme, she won't necessarily transform like this. I train 3 times a week, deadlift 95 kilos and my thighs aren't that muscular. I still have a flat arse too!

It's called getting older. Our bodies change, as does our metabolism and how exercise effects us.

I get the whole investment clothing though, this was one of my motivations, if not the main motivation.

But, you need to work on your mental health and self-esteem, neither are great and clearly doing you the most harm.

Hi OP,
I've name changed too for this. I am sorry you are so unhappy. Apart from the doctor who prescribed you this needing to be struck off I wanted to offer you an unmumsnetty hug. Eating disorders are a bitch and become so ingrained and often very quickly. I was technically classed as Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified in my early 20s but it had been rumbling since childhood. I never had treatment and it ebbed and flowed. In the past year I've lost 2 stone and look at myself and still feel unhappy with my body, especially my stomach. I was slightly overweight before but my BMI is now 21. I look at myself and think another stone loss wouldn't go amiss. Then I remind myself I have 3 children and am mid-40s and will never have the long slim legs or flat stomach seeing as I'm only 5ft 3in! I could probably get a flat stomach but it would lead to a relapse because that level of dedication needed would lead to obsession and illness. I made a promise to myself that I would stay healthy once i became a mother and despite the odd wobble over the years I've stuck to that promise. My waffly point is that the bitch will probably always live in your head, sometimes she will be quiet, other times she will shout. The most important thing to remember is that she talks shit. Ozempic is something that will let you have control over yourself, if it works, but I'm sure you know that control gets out of control very quickly.
Please look after yourself and remember that you need and deserve nice food and that your self worth is not reflected by a number on a scale. You deserve health and happiness and you won't find that in any medication Flowers

CornedBeef451 · 04/05/2023 20:37

I think if you had an eating disorder than taking ozempic that you haven't had officially prescribed could be a sign that you are still in an unhealthy mindset about your weight.

Perhaps you should try counselling or other treatment rather than drugs.

If you've messed up your metabolism then you could try reading Why We Eat Too Much. It explains why our bodies hold onto excess weight after dieting and how to change your diet to help your body realise it's not starving.

JRHartley72 · 04/05/2023 20:52

How did you get hold of Ozempic with a normal BMI? Did you lie?

You're not appreciating how hard it is to get legs to look remotely like that. Unless you have 1 in a billion genetics lifting weights as a woman will not make you bulky.

Isn’t it prescription only?
It's available on numerous sites on the internet, no "prescription" needed”

You'd have to be pretty daft to buy prescription only drugs from a website.

Peridot1 · 05/05/2023 10:16

@MrsSkylerWhite - there are reputable websites where you complete an online consultation and submit photos and sometimes have a telephone call.

Peridot1 · 05/05/2023 10:17

@JRHartley72 - yes of course she did. (I’m not judging as it sounds like she is in a bad place but it’s really not a good idea obviously)
