Any recommendations for decent protein shakes?

I really need to increase my protein intake and struggling to find a decent low sugar option that's not absolutely vile and expensive as hell. I really don't know where else to look at all. Does anyone know where might do samples? I've thrown 4 packs in the bin over the last few weeks at almost £80.
Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, no. They are all gross and ultra processed crap! Any reason you can't eat a chicken breast, eggs, pint or two of milk? (Vegan?)

The the Fast800 ones - they're low carb as well as low calorie and don't use any artificial ingredients.

I make my own. Enough for a week and it keeps great in the fridge.

I don't measure but it includes -

Oats
Berries
Spinach
Walnuts Brazil nuts Almonds
Milled flax seed
Chia seeds
Protein powder - I use vanilla flavor but there are others.

I make with water Whizz up and decant into lock top mugs. Tastes great and nothing added like the shop ones. I keep spinach and berries in freezer. It sounds time consuming but probably takes around ten minutes to make a weeks supply.

Worth a shot?

Purition

Moonshine5 · 26/04/2023 21:47

PhD
Banana flavour

I use Bulk Powders vanilla one. It’s nice on its own with oat or dairy milk. It tells you to use water but I’ve never liked any protein shakes with water.

LighterNights · 26/04/2023 22:04

I would've suggested Exante but they recently changed the formula and they're all rank now.

MyProtein. The range is incredible, cheapest about and you can use them in anything.

Belindabelle · 27/04/2023 14:19

Purition. It’s mainly ground seeds and nuts mixed with whey. No artificial nasties and only 4g carbs per 40g serving. You can order single portion sizes to try the different flavours.

I think it tastes best stirred into Greek yoghurt, kefir or quark as it does not blend totally smoothly when mixed with milk or water.

I've recently started using the MyProtein clear whey shakes. They taste like fruit squash.

I started out with a couple of sample sachets as I didn't want to buy a big tub until I knew I liked it.

Women's Best, their French Vanilla and Salted Caramel are delicious. Just avoid the vegan ones as they aren't as good.

Desperatelydoomscrolling · 28/04/2023 14:39

I like MyProtein ones, even with water they feel creamy and taste nice. I mean, it's no maccies banana milkshake but it's enjoyable rather than hold your nose and drink it quick like some of them. Failing that, you don't need protein shakes and can have enough protein in food. It's just I'd insist to myself i need a whole block of cheese to do it so it's healthier for me to have shakes lol.

NotMeNoNo · 28/04/2023 14:41

I like Purition, it can be a bit seedy but it's the only one I tried so maybe they are all like that. Blend it with milk and frozen berries.

bunhead1979 · 28/04/2023 14:43

I like Puritition and also Huel (not the normal heel meal replacement, they do a separate protein powder one) and the banana one is quite nice.

Fifiellz · 28/04/2023 15:14

The best one Ive tried is MyProtein clear whey in Vimto flavour

Yes.

I have trouble digesting lactose and dairy in general so have always stuck with MyProtein impact whey isolate. It's not full of sugar and doesn't upset my digestion. I have the chocolate brownie one but the regular chocolate and vanilla ones are good too.

A 25g serving gives 19g of protein, 1.7g carbohydrates of which 0.6g sugars.

I sometimes add a scoop to fage full fat, porridge too. But usually just add it to water. Use less water than you think you need and shake shake shake and shake some more.

Another vote here for Purition. I blend it with a bit of frozen fruit (usualyy blueberries) and almond milk. Delicious.

I’ve tried all the weird and wonderful flavours, some are just no but usually that’s obvious I am just a sucker for trying them. Banana (luminous yellow?!), red bean, milk tea, apple crumble have all been ick for me. Cookies and cream is a nice neutral one.

I have mine as shakes, in yogurt, cereal, mug cakes, porridge, cookies. It goes weird for me in porridge where it splits due to heat so I mix it with a drop of milk and add it last.

One of the gyms I used to train at use to give us free Myprotein protein shakes after a session. They tended to stick to just chocolate or vanilla. When I changed gyms, I had to buy my own and Myprotein chocolate brownie was the first one I tried. Haven't been tempted by any of the others! Am not surprised banana is luminous yellow!

I mostly take them after a weights session, so just add water and drink on my way home. I don't drink milk or dairy substitutes, so make porridge with water. Maybe this is why mine doesn't split? I also add the protein powder once it's cooked. In the summer when it's hot, I like to mix with with full fat greek yogurt, add in some raspberries and freeze for a few hours. Delicious and for me, more stomach friendly than ice cream!

Revengeofthepangolins · 28/04/2023 16:50

Have been using huel protein (not their complete) which is vegan, so gets away from dairy if that is helpful.

I wouldn't say it is tasty but I can get it down, whereas the stuff my son eats makes me retch, so worth a go!

Purition was nicer, but not such a good protein to carb ratio
