So upset this morning.

I've been on a diet for 6 weeks. Lost 11 pounds. Weighed myself last week, lost nothing. Just weighed myself today and I have put on 1.5 lbs, so lost 9.5 in total.

So, I've been staying within my points, and even not using all the Flexi points, and have been doing 7 workouts a week. Been feeling really positive and good about myself.

I'm disappointed and upset and am feeling f*ck it, where's the Toblerone.

I need to lose 2 stone (excluding the 9.5 lbs)

Don't give up, you've done amazingly. I find my weight loss stops or I gain a couple of lbs for all kinds of reasons- hormones, tiredness etc. For now focus on how you feel and not the scales and keep at it.

WilkinsonM · 26/04/2023 07:14

9.5lbs in 6 weeks is loads!
you need to remember that weight isn't just made of fat. You'll lose and gain water weight, glycogen etc. and your weight will fluctuate. You need to look at the overall trend, not week to week. You haven't gained back any fat.

CamsPaisleyCuffs · 26/04/2023 07:15

Don't sabotage all the hard work you've put in so far! That would be like knocking your phone off the table onto the floor and instead of picking it up to find a little crack stamping on it instead.

Human bodies are not machines, they are influenced by all sorts of things and even if you've diligently stuck to your plan it could be hormones, water retention or any number of things at play. Be kind to yourself, maybe have a little treat (not necessarily food).

You've done so well to lose that much weight already, this is just a minor set back.

Simianwalk · 26/04/2023 07:16

Have you measured yourself? With that amount of exercise it's likely that you've lost some CMs around your stomach/arms but potentially have made muscle. The weight gain can also be water, are you more hydrated? Needed a wee? A pint of water weighs a lb.

More importantly at this stage are you feeling better in yourself? Fitter? Eating better? Is it manageable in the long run?

My BF is in a similar situation and Keep saying she hasn't lost any weight which she made though or not have done but she looks so much better. He skin tone is brighter, she has a waist, more energy. Stick at it.

Dontknownow86 · 26/04/2023 07:16

Weight fluctuates up for all sorts of reasons, a lot of sodium, where you are in your cycle, if you've done a lot of exercise. You're generally in the right direction so just ignore it and carry on. You're 9.5lb down. That's amazing!

Hmmm, I wonder if the weight increase is muscle from toning up... What's does the belt hole test tell you? 😁 If your shape is more defined I'd be happy with that.

She's highly unlikely to have built any new muscle in 6 weeks especially in a calorie deficit and if not weight training to build muscle. Toning muscle doesn't make it heavier, just stronger.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 26/04/2023 07:21

What is your water consumption like?
Are you feeling achy from the workouts?

Exercise can cause you to retain water as it's used by your muscles to recover. It's not a bad thing, you don't need to cut the exercise (though 7 workouts a week is a lot, where is your rest day?) you just need to make sure you are getting enough water to fuel the process without your body needing to retain it.

I'm at the start of long weight loss journey and convinced the scales are against me as they don't reflect the effort I'm putting in or when I might have bad days, so I can drop pounds at one point, plateau for days for now reason and have ups and downs like a roller coaster.
I weigh daily and look at trends over 7/30/90 days and as long as it's roughly downwards that'll do.
If weight loss was a linear journey that accurately reflected calories in versus out it would be so much easier to maintain.
Don't lose heart. Just keep your eye on the end game.

Ludicrousness · 26/04/2023 09:14

OK, thx for the messages of support. Feeling better now.

I'll admit that my water consumption is crap. 3 coffees and loads of tea when at work and my water bottle remains untouched. I drink water with dinner and during my workout.

I'm defo eating healthier and less trash.

My 7 workouts are 7 x 45 min workouts. Usually, Body Pump, followed by Yoga, or a run followed by Yoga, over 4 days, so I do have recovery.

In the last week, I knew I had put on weight as I felt bloated and my boobs felt massive whereas before I felt slimmer.

I know I am moaning, but I've been really busy lately and I felt like I was being really disciplined working and working out so much.

Are you due on?

I get the frustration, I've been dieting (low calorie) since jan and have only lost a stone. I didn't weigh myself for a month as I was getting so disheartened at the slow losses, then weighed myself last week and was about 5lbs more than I thought. I wish that I'd taken a note of my weight from the start and made a graph so I had a visual picture of the overall downward trend - a poster on another thread had done this and I thought it was a great idea.

Im just carrying on regardless - I feel a lot better and have lots more energy. I've got another 10lbs-ish to lose and il get there eventually. Just try to remember this is a lifestyle change, not a quick-fix diet. If you go back to eating the way you were before you'll quickly put the 9lbs back on so don't give up now.

If you've noticed feeling bloated and this coincides with the "weight gain" then the chances are it's water, rather than anything else. Although it can seem counter intuitive, weighing daily can actually help, as the overall trend is easier to spot, compared to one weekly weigh in which could be affected by an anomaly on the particular day you chose to weigh. Taking measurements can also be helpful.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 26/04/2023 10:04

Just to demonstrate how weird the scales can be. A couple of years ago I did a 100 day weigh challenge where I weighed and logged every day for 100 days. I would go up and down by 2lb a day sometimes but the overall trend was down.

Oh, someone talk me back from the ledge
Pinkflamingopants · 26/04/2023 13:39

My noom weight graph shows a 5lb difference between today and Monday. Its all relative...

sofamarathon · 26/04/2023 16:42

I think your expectations are unrealistic and you should look deeper i to the reasons why WW / diet clubs are a waste of money

Ludicrousness · 26/04/2023 17:27

Err not really. I’ve done WW’s about 5 times in the past 25 years and the weight dropped off, and I was at my healthiest. It wasn’t a waste of money.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 26/04/2023 17:37

No idea about weight watchers but I always stall/gain for a week or 10 days before my period is due and then lose a lot the following week after its arrival. Could it be that?

For the sod it, its not working so I might as well be eating feeling, I always find this picture quite helpful in such moments

Ludicrousness · 26/04/2023 17:47

Thx. I’ll take a copy of those.

Vegetus · 26/04/2023 18:16

Weigh yourself everyday and follow the trend. Once a week weighing can show increases for all manner of reasons other than fat gain, you'll also get this weighing everyday but it will help you understand +2 or -2 doesn't mean anything unless it's part of a trend.

The problem with diet clubs like SW/WW is exactly this though, the vast majority of people will end up in a continuous loss/gain cycle over time without ever truly learning to eat intuitively, or develop healthier habits by themselves. So the fix is always to go back to the club, which is exactly what SW/WW want, it's how they make money.
