Where am I going wrong?

Struggling to loose weight, I've previously lost 3 stone calorie counting about a year ago, then the weight loss stopped and due to medical reasons I've been maintaining the weight. I've decided I wanted to loose more, I started the gym 8 weeks ago and have been going 3x a week, for the last 3 weeks I also started couch to 5k 3x a week and I also walk a minimum of 5 and up to 10 miles a day. I calculated my TDEE, accounted for the high activity and have been sticking to my calories and my weight has not budged! ( I know it's not muscle gain as the scales haven't changed at all) just wondering if anyone had any advice!

I think it is likely that your body tries to maintain your weight within a set range. To change your weight-set point you need to do do it gradually and with certain changes to your whole life routine. The best book explaining science behind it is Why we eat (too much). If anyone has some other resources I would like to reqd them too.

Google ‘weight loss whoosh’. It takes a while for fat cells to die.

baklavagoddess · 24/04/2023 19:58

@talknomore thank you, I've seen a few people mention this so I'll have a look!

@orangegato thanks I'll have a look into this! I'm just so frustrated at my efforts proving pointless atm!

You're probably being too generous re the activity level/intensity.
If you have really, consistently been at or below that calorie level 80%+ of the time and lost nothing over two months, that tells you that it's still maintenance.

So drop it by say 250 calories per day, see if that makes a difference over a month

baklavagoddess · 24/04/2023 20:54

@Harrysmummy246 I've tried dropping my calories to 1400 for around 2 weeks to see if it would make anything budge and found I couldn't sustain my level of activity, I was knackered, the scales again didn't budge but maybe I didn't give it enough time. I'm eating 1,600 currently

What's your current and goal weight?

ChickpeaPie · 25/04/2023 16:39

If you’re eating your exercise calories then you won’t lose weight, you’ll effectively be breaking even and maintaining. You won’t have a calorie deficit if you eat exercise calories

baklavagoddess · 25/04/2023 18:55

@ChickpeaPie I don't eat my exercise calories, I don't put them into MFP

baklavagoddess · 25/04/2023 18:56

@Harrysmummy246 I'm currently 12.5 stone, Im 5"5 my goal is 10.5 stone

You're lacking patience. Starving yourself will cause weight loss and eventually rebound weight gain. Or eating sensibly, like you are, with loads of veggies and a sensible amount of protein plus exercise, will get you there - eventually.

Hang on in there, you are doing it.

baklavagoddess · 25/04/2023 19:34

Thank you @Pestispeeved I think your right, I'll keep at it Grin

ChickpeaPie · 25/04/2023 22:01

You may not be putting the exercise into MFP but if you’ve changed your settings to include the exercise you’re doing then hasnt this given you more calories which is the same thing?

ChickpeaPie · 25/04/2023 22:01

I mean your activity level

OwlsDance · 25/04/2023 22:30

If you've suddenly dramatically increased your exercise frequency and intensity, your body will start holding more glycogen and water. It's totally normal. I always weigh more when I restart running, or up my mileage. Tape measure and calculating your body fat % will tell you a better story.

baklavagoddess · 26/04/2023 13:35

@ChickpeaPie I'm burning over 2,000 calories most days and I'm eating 1,600 calories a day if anything I don't feel like I'm eating enough

OP posts:
baklavagoddess · 26/04/2023 13:36

@OwlsDance thank you I will try that

That book I recommended will explain why calories in - calories out is a false assumption.
