Big weight gain overnight

I have been steadily but slowly losing weight over the past 2 months, down around 3kg. I have mainly being doing this by cutting to around 1200 calories per day, reducing carbs and not eating after 5pm.

I always weigh myself first thing in the morning and usually my weight fluctuates by around 0.2kg but on a slow downard trend. This morning however it jumped up by 0.5kg and also my fat % went up by 0.5%.

I don't understand the reason for this huge jump. Yesterday I ate grapefruit for breakfast, a cheese baguette for lunch and homemade pad thai with prawns at 5pm for dinner. It was a carb heavy day but I had no other snacks or drinks other than water/black coffee and total was under 1200 calories. Would the increase in carbs account for this increase?

Hoping it comes down again today as I haven't felt hungry at all.

Firstly, 1200 calories is nowhere near enough. This sounds like an eating disorder.

500 grams is NOTHING, you could be holding onto a little bit of water, be a little bit bloaty because your period is due, need a big poo. Restricting like this and not eating past certain times isn't healthy at all

Sparklfairy · 24/03/2023 12:09

You shouldn't be weighing yourself every day. Weight can fluctuate by a few lbs throughout the day - women more so than men. 0.5kg is nothing tbh.

MaireadMcSweeney · 24/03/2023 12:12

It's fine to weigh every day as long as you don't freak out when it goes up one day!!

FrangipaniBlue · 24/03/2023 12:20

In the nicest possible way, weighing yourself every day and wondering why you've gone up by 500g over a day is not a healthy attitude to weight loss.

Twizbe · 24/03/2023 12:20

It's fine to be on 1200 calories. I tend to stick to around 1000 and don't have an eating disorder.

It's also ok to weigh yourself every day but understand that your weight will fluctuate, as long as the trend over time is down that's good.

I find mine fluctuates with my cycle. Around ovulation tend to go up a bit and then go down loads as soon as I've ovulated.

LookingOldTheseDays · 24/03/2023 12:22

This sounds like very disordered eating and associated behaviours. 0.5kg is absolutely nothing - well within normal variation from day to day. The fact that you think this is a big gain is really concerning.

Eating more carbs can cause water retention, so it's probably just water anyway.

MrNook · 24/03/2023 12:27

500g isn't a huge jump, you sound like you have an eating disorder, your relationship with food and weighing yourself daily is not healthy or normal

midgemadgemodge · 24/03/2023 12:33

Depending on age , height and other factors 1200 can be a very reasonable level to lose weight

The average women used 1800 and so shouldn't go below 1300 a day

But for that to be average sone have to be less than average

The op doesn't report extra fast weight loss

Daily logging isn't always helpful - a bit more salt leads to water retention, a pre period fluctuation

Monthly weighing is probably best

But I can understand that daily checking helps you feel in control of yourself

Fremdschämen · 24/03/2023 12:46

Both cheese and prawns can be salty - possibly fluid retention.

Throwramen · 24/03/2023 12:48

To gain 500g of fat, you need to eat 3000 calories on top of your usual daily consumption.
Unless you had three big mac meals on top of your breakfast lunch and dinner, ita VERY hard to accomplish.

Its just water retention

Wheretheskyisblue · 24/03/2023 13:13

Thanks all, it was just a bit of a surprise for both weight and fat % to go up together, normally when one goes up the other drops with water retention. Plus that degree of fluctuation is not normal for me.

I find daily weighings help motivate me and I don't think a 3 kg loss over 2 months is unhealthy or extreme.

Regarding calories becuase I have quite a sendentary job I need to keep to 1200 to lose. If I was exercising more I would up my calories.

My fitness pall says I should only have 1257 cals a day so I don't think 1200 represents an eating disorder if you are dieting. However you shouldn't angst about fluctuations in weight.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 24/03/2023 14:32

I have to stick to around the same £1200 calories as due to disability I can't walk very far but you say overall you're losing which is great but a fluctuation is normal and such a tiny one could be due to simple water retention.. or even needing a poo!
Try not to weigh so frequently and concentrate on the overall loss

Long time since I did Slimming World or WW, but I seem to recall that if you followed their eating plan strictly (loads of speed foods and high fibre) you'd be on about 1250 calories a day. The NHS has recently suggested that the 2000 calorie for women guideline be dropped to 1500 calories a day and I've been told by my doctor that once a woman's gone through the menopause she ought to cut down to 1500 a day in order to maintain her weight and not gain unless she's very active. So 1200 is perfectly fine for someone aiming to lose weight as long as they're eating 1200 calories of veg and lean meat, fish etc.

Weighing everyday is actually good as you can get an average to see your actual weight
