Any tips to stop me eating when not hungry/out of boredom

I cannot stop eating junk food! Crisps, chocolate, biscuits, sweets, even when I'm not hungry and full from eating so much crap I continue to eat it! I need to lose weight but there's always junk food in my house. My husband and children eat it so it's not really an option not to buy it. Any tips? Seems to be all mind consuming

I could, have written your post OP, I am the same! I am so good during the day and come evening I can eat all around me, its soul destroying as I walk and its all undone every evening. I can't stop myself and as silly as it sounds I don't know what my trigger is as I cannot decipher if I'm bored, stressed etc.
I go to get crisps and know I should not but I just can't stop myself.
Any ideas would be great, watching this thread with interest! Good luck OP

There are times when I feel as though I could eat a horse, but know that I do not need this. What I do (well try and do!) in these situations is to drink a glass of water instead.

Teach yourself how to knit or crochet - something to concentrate on and distract yourself

Obviously just stop buying it. Your kids and husband don't need to eat it either. If your husband complains tell him to buy his own and put it somewhere away from you.
It's literally hardwired into our DNA to crave and eat salt, sugar, fat. Willpower is actually not enough, its not just you.
If you're serious about eating healthy, don't buy unhealthy, it's the only way.

Same.
I'm ttc and really need to lose weight but it's so hard to not eat.

I'll start eating a family bag of something and then feel bag for eating it but then finish the bag!?

I eat crap all day long it seems an addiction and because I know I shouldn't I want it more. Then feel crap after as there's nothing I can do.

Stop buying it. It’s not good for anyone, especially your children. Everyone’s health will improve.

Drink water. Feel an urge to eat, drink water instead.

I'm the same but only since menopause. Seemed to have triggered a major sugar/salt addiction. I hate myself afterwards. Every day is the day I say I'll eat better. Every day I fail.

LittleFingerStrength · 23/03/2023 22:23

I was like this most of my life.

I started to look at food differently and I don't abuse it anymore.

What worked for me may just be a personal thing though, as it wasn't just one thing as someone pointed out hormone changes can make a difference.

I suspect I am peri menopausal. I have read up on it and apparently for some your taste buds change as does your sense of smell, so food you once loved you can go off and food you once hated you can start to enjoy.

Have you looked into intermittent fasting? If done
prop the cravings stop as your hunger hormones and insulin will be balanced instead of up and down. Read 'delay don't deny' by gin stephens for a better explanation that the one I've just given. Worked for me though and I'm a complete chocolate and biscuit fiend.

Brushing my teeth after a meal can sometimes stop me from wanting to snack.
Also crunching on ice works really well for me when I'm feeling snackish through boredom.

Pixiedust1234 · 23/03/2023 23:46

I can go all day being good but once 8pm comes then I turn feral. No idea why unless its something to do with being 2 hours after a big meal and a sugar drop. Atm its salt and vinegar crisps, eat them near me then please count your fingers afterwards 😳

I agree it is easier to delay than deny. For me, delaying tactics include eating non-calorific foods just to have something in my mouth. This include cucumber sticks with soy and sugar-free jelly. That might satisfy you for an hour - that is a whole hour of not eating crisps and cakes.

I don't eat after dinner around 5-6pm. If I'm hungry after then I just ignore it. I recommend getting a gym ball and bouncing on it while watching tv. You can't bounce and eat. Drink more water definitely. I'm perimenopausal and am down to 9 stone and half a pound from
10 stone 10 lb last September. Mainly through eating less, currently 1500 calories a day on average, getting more exercise (walking) and using evening times to bounce if I'm watching tv. Brushing my teeth after dinner helps too. I do eat snacks but as part of my calorie allowance and nothing after dinner. Porridge for breakfast with chia seeds, Greek yogurt and berry compote and honey for lunch, fruit, dinner is often homemade vegetable soup of some description with 2 petit pains or pasta or occasionally something from the chippy (about once a month), homemade pizza, falafel, wraps, homemade chips, whatever I fancy but a small portion. Time of the month might see me eat my exercise calories for a day or two but it's not affecting Ted my weight loss. No food is off limits and no food is demonised. It's just food, it has no moral attributes. Good luck, you can do it!
