Hiya

So looking for advice as following a bit of a break down I lost my appetite for a couple of weeks. I'd always joked about this happening but to actually experience no appetite was bizarre. So my appetite has returned but I'd say to about half of what it was at most. So since November I've lost stones hard to say how many but at least 4 stones gone since I last logged on mfp. All my one day I'll fit into that clothes I'm now wearing which again is great but my energy levels some days are very poor. I'm a lot more active now with the weight loss but still have about 6 stone to shift. Some days I do way too much and other days I struggle to get out of bed. Is this purely because I'm not eating enough do you think or a reflection on doing more? I don't eat until lunch time and often not until dinner but will have a decent sized dinner. Also my water intake is poor and I am trying to increase. I'm just wondering if anyone has a suggestion of a snack that gives them energy or suggestions to increase my energy that would help. I won't be having breakfast although I appreciate it could help, I just can't face eating that early.

What are you eating, when you eat? Is your diet very carb-heavy?

Candleabra · 10/03/2023 16:45

Are you eating enough protein? I would definitely increase water intake too.

Thanks for the replies. So today I've had 2 cuppa soups and unusually for me 3 mini sausage rolls. Tonight for dinner I'll have 2 slices of ancient grain bread from Aldi and 3 scrambled eggs. Yesterday was similar but no sausage rolls and 2 large bananas instead and ancient grain blt sandwich with lots of salad and streaky bacon. So actually not that similar but it tends to be a variation of this. Often we make our own veg soup but we didn't make it this week but soup for lunch.

I don’t think you are eating enough and that might be why you have no energy.
I would go and see your gp just to see if there is any reason you have no appetite. Your weight loss has been very fast which may be caused by a medical issue or it might be causing you issues.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/03/2023 19:04

That's nowhere near enough food for me, not surprised you're feeling unenergetic.

fluffy2buffy · 10/03/2023 19:10

I have though about seeing the GP. Writing it down has made me think that would have been a snack last year. My mental health has improved so I put it down to not over eating through depression. But I eat when I'm hungry but I just don't seem to get hungry!

Thats the sort of weight loss that someone who has had weight loss surgery experiences

Someone who has had surgery, is on a number of specialist/high level supplements, they have to log their protein and hydration and even then its very very very tough and exhausting. So its not surprising that you are exhausted unless you are being supported by medical supervision and taking the right amount of nutrition.

You sound as if you want to lose weight so its likely you've used the situation to your advantage to eat as little as possible but long term,, unless you're doinng things in a certain way you'll become ill, lose hair, lose calcium/iron etc etc

ScottishBeth · 10/03/2023 19:13

Go and see your GP - some blood tests might be in order. Losing that much weight in such a short space of time should be discussed with a doctor.

fluffy2buffy · 10/03/2023 19:14

I had weight loss surgery about 4 years and have always had a terrible relationship with food. I suspect I was nearly 30 stone before I started my liver reducing diet but the scales didn't weigh high enough to check. I was 28 stone when I had my operation. I lost about 8 stone ish but then because I hadn't tackled the demons behind why I over ate, inevitably the weight crept back up and then yo yo'd. I do want to lose the weight I've wanted to all my life I just never imagined it would be this way.

Unexplained weight loss needs a discussion with your doctor to discount health causes

fluffy2buffy · 10/03/2023 19:26

I think I should man up. I feel a bit embarrassed still massively overweight saying Dr I'm worried about my weight loss at 5 stone + overweight. Plus I've had a life of avoiding Dr's because of my weight. But I think I've had good advice, thank you all.

You're not eating any veg, op. That would be my starting point,
Also have you ever been checked for pre diabetes ? You'd be at risk being very overweight and fast weight loss and no energy is a sign.

I think you need to go back to your provider and ask for dietician/nutritionist help about how to make sure you do this safely. Or was it the NHS?

Have you read any of Denise Radcliffe - she is a leading bariatric counsellor in the UK, her book is amazing about the emotional side of weight loss surgery

Did you have a sleeve?

BIWI · 10/03/2023 19:57

I'm sorry - and I'm trying to be kind here, honestly! - but that's a truly shit diet. No wonder you have no energy!

So today I've had 2 cuppa soups

Full of artificial ingredients, and highly processed, which won't be doing you any favours.

and unusually for me 3 mini sausage rolls

I'm glad this is unusual! Lots of carbs here, not only from the pastry but also, most likely, from the sausage meat

Tonight for dinner I'll have 2 slices of ancient grain bread from Aldi and 3 scrambled eggs

The scrambled eggs are fine, but the bread is adding more carbs - even if it is made from ancient grains.

Yesterday was similar but no sausage rolls and 2 large bananas instead

Bananas are the most carby fruit you could have chosen

and ancient grain blt sandwich with lots of salad and streaky bacon

Not sure how much salad you can really get into a sandwich! But again, carbs from the bread.

You're not eating anywhere near enough vegetables, and your protein is fairly limited. So you'll be eating a high carb diet, which won't be doing you any favours at all.

Were you not given any advice about diet when you were in the run up to/after your weight loss surgery?

BIWI · 10/03/2023 19:59

You need to be eating more fresh vegetables and salad, with some fruit. Avoid the processed foods - all your protein sources (apart from the eggs) are processed too.

bellac11 · 10/03/2023 20:06

Yes, normally the diet after WLS is a mantra of 'protein first', you get your protein in first, followed by prioritising veg and then fruit and carbs come last or not at all if you cant fit them in

Your protein should be between 60-80 although that might differ dependent onw what you're advised to eat.

Your calories should be low like you are doing. You need lots of fluids to keep things moving, keep hydrated but equally deal with the amount of protein you have. Are you eating and drinking at the same time or keeping it apart still? What about your supplements?

BIWI · 10/03/2023 20:14

I realise I've posted without knowing much about WLS, so apologies if anything I've posted isn't right.

bellac11 · 10/03/2023 20:35

Well people who havent been through the process may have a fantastical view about WLS, like you have it and suddenly its a magic fix but you still have to diet and be careful about what you put inside you. You are on limited calories, you have to focus on protein, not slip back to simply smaller portions of your old ways (which some people do obviously, but ideally you wouldnt)

A lot of the focus is on making sure your nutrition is right and you maintain your loss.

Bread is not ideal but can be tolerated by some. Sausage rolls really shouldnt feature....

In terms of fats, its difficult as I am an advocate of a high fat low carb way of eating but, too high fats are not only calorie filled but can cause havoc with the gallbladder after WLS, its a big risk so most of the advice seems to be about usinng low fat yoghurt/cheese/dairy etc (which I dont like)
