Can you lose any weight walking 10k steps?

Has anyone had any success?

I’m very sedentary and usually average about 3,400 for the entire day, please don’t judge. The last two days I’ve done 10,000 and my legs ache so much I genuinely feel like I’ve done a workout. Do steps even count though for weight loss?

I’ve only got about 10ths to lose so didn’t want to do anything too dramatic and also just want to move a little more anyway

An additional 10,000 steps taken each day often results in an additional 2000–3500 calories burned each week. According to your weight and exercise intensity, you might lose around one pound per week just by walking an additional 10,000 steps each day as one pound of body fat equals 3500 calories.

I use the Walk at Home app and program.
fitness walking, low impact cardio and it certainly helps.
getting your heart rate into the right zone and maintaining it for a certain amount of time (20 minutes I think) is key.

Is that the Walk for Weight Loss app? I’ve just downloaded it. Thanks. Quite depressing to see how few calls you burn off but better off than on.

I don’t know how much I eat or how much I weigh but walking is one of my favourite ways to exercise and I’ll challenge anyone who says “walking isn’t exercise” to come back and tell me that after 30,000-65,000 steps! I always get fitter and feel trimmer after several days of that even if I couple it with eating like a horse.

if you’re aching OP then it’s exercise.

@greenspaces4peace thanks, that’s £7 per month. I’ve downloaded another one, which is free. I’ll see how I get on. My favourite app for this is FitOn (free or £ for extra features which aren’t essential).

For me 10,000 steps per day does help me lose weight. If I reduce my steps for a few weeks then I put on weight quite quickly.

MaireadMcSweeney · 20/02/2023 19:26

No. Unless you combine it with a calorie deficit. It might make it easier to achieve a deficit though.

I average about 22,000 steps a day, and have so for the better part of a decade, but still need to lose about 3 stone to be in better health. So, no, in my case. It's the food that is my problem.

DaisyDucks · 20/02/2023 20:00

You are doing well. Please keep it up because you will start to see the results. The small daly tasks make the biggest difference.

I weighed between 10 1/2 stone to 11 stone for years (5’5”)…I tried everything from running, to the full on Joe Wicks diet / exercise plan and barely lost any weight.

I started walking 10k-12k steps a day and changed my diet, and the weight dropped off. I’m now consistently 9 stone and I’ve definitely upped my calories again. I do tend to do 15k + steps each day now.

More important than the weight loss though, are the mental health benefits, and I genuinely treasure the time I spend walking. It is a real luxury.
