Lost all I wanted to. Kept it off for about a year but it's creeping back. Facing a summer unable to wear last years stuff.

Best part of 40 years bloody dieting. So sick of it.

This is why dieting doesn't work. You need to make healthy, permanent lifestyle choices, aka a consistent healthy diet. Very hard to do but it's the only way!

MuthaHubbard · 14/02/2023 21:56

Absolutely agree. Lost a good amount and kept it off for a good 6 yrs or so - got fed up of the whole rigmarole and took my eye off the ball about 18months ago so weight has crept up a bit. It's true when they say maintenance is the hardest bit.
Which means I feel naff and have jumped back into it.

SingaporeSlinky · 14/02/2023 22:18

At least you’ve noticed now that it’s creeping back on. How much did you lose and how much has come back on?
I lost 1.5 stone last year and about half of that came back on, but I know full well it’s because I went back to some of my old ways. I got a bit complacent and started eating more junk here and there, exercising less, drinking more sugary coffees. But actually I know exactly what I need to do to get it off again, and have resumed my old (new) routine and it’s starting to come off again.

Yoyo dieting is depressing, you need to make the healthy changes permanent ones.
Summer is a long way off, you can still get here, but you need to put the effort in again.

lipstickwoman · 14/02/2023 22:23

I lost 3 stones and did enough exercise to improve my fitness vastly.

Exercise wise im still doing ok.. recently completed ct5k and enjoy lots of walking. It's the glasses of wine, lunches out.

Sadly I know exactly what needs doing. Just tired of doing it.

I've put half a stone back on, but that 7lbs is making a load of difference to how my clothes fit

3 stone is great, and half a stone back isn’t too bad if you can nip it in the bud now. I guess you need to decide which you prefer, because it’ll be the choice for the rest of your life! We know that yo-yo dieters get stuck in the cycle because they do the ‘right’ things, achieve their target - a special holiday / event they want to lose for - and go back to exactly the same old ways.

If it’s frequent lunches out, you need to be able to build in the buffer the rest of the day/week to afford the excessive calories. And if you want wine, again, need to compromise by having fewer glasses, less frequently, or reducing calories from food that day.

I feel your pain. I love life, enjoy all the little things that make life fun, lunches with friends, meals out with family. But yes, you get to the age as a woman where you have to be a puritan or be overweight. It's very irritating.

TransportedCarla · 14/02/2023 23:25

Yeah, I understand. In my early 50s. For me it comes down to a choice. TCarla do you want to wear the clothes in your wardrobe you like (the non elasticated waist clothes) and feel comfortable in your body or do you want to eat bread, drink wine and have salty snacks late at night on the sofa. Which is more important? It’s just a choice.

AutisticLegoLover · 15/02/2023 06:57

7lb isn't much to lose so you will do that easily by summer. Have you worked out your tdee? If you do that you'll see your maintenance calories and cutting calories. As a rough guide cutting is usually 500 calories less per day than maintenance. Once you've lost the weight your maintenance will be less than it was originally so you'll need to recalculate once you reach your goal. Good luck and maybe give the LOSE IT thread a good. It's a very supportive thread where we are all losing in a healthy, sustainable way. No fad diets or anything, just healthy lifestyles.

heartbeatt · 15/02/2023 07:12

I hear you. I'm so fed up of either being fat or having to watch every single bloody thing I put in my mouth.

7lbs is really do-able though. I'm doing Slimming World (albeit a version without the unlimited 'free' pasta and spuds) and I lost 7lbs in my first week. I'm not hugely overweight either.

If you've lost 3st - amazing, by the way - then you can easily get rid of 7lbs in a couple of weeks.

But I really do agree that the whole weight thing is relentless.

AreYouSeriouslyThere · 15/02/2023 20:38

I'm in a similar situation. Maintained my goal for a couple of years. But I've left things slide since Christmas and now have 7 lbs to loose ☹️.

Think it's partly down to starting a new job where snacks are freely available!!

At least I know what I need to do.......and you do too. I'm trying to view it as having got a bit padded over the depths of winter and I'll lose it over the spring.

Roussette · 15/02/2023 20:45

I'm so with you OP. Lost 3 stone in the last couple of years, then went on a long holiday of a lifetime and put back on a whole effing stone.
Finding it really hard to shift again.
I seem to spend all day every day working out what I can and can't eat, it's sooooo tedious.
I find it really hard at this time of year because I just want comfort food and more than I eat when weather is better

AutisticLegoLover · 15/02/2023 21:59

Constant vigilance. That's the pessimistic view. The more optimistic view is moderation with the occasional blow out should keep you steady once any you have to lose is lost.

lipstickwoman · 15/02/2023 22:04

It's like you turn your back for a moment and 'Ooo hello 7 pounds'. That last half some took for bloody ever to lose, and then came back with me barely noticing. It made more difference to my shape than any too.

It has to go though.

It’s so depressing!
I lost about 15kg a couple of years ago through low carb and running. But it’s sad to think that you have to watch what you eat for the rest of your life or put it back on. I’m working on it again, but I do think there needs to be a bigger conversation around diet culture and why we all feel the need to be thinner rather than accepting our natural shape!

SpotOnMyBot · 16/02/2023 06:29

I have exactly the same problem and it's exactly the same amount 3kg

It actually pushes me up a size in clothes because of my waist. It's so depressing. I am going to end with a side of my wardrobe one size and the other one size bigger.

I have started restricting calories again today to lose it but it's super depressing. And I know it's entirely my fault really not helped by Dp having a chocolate and wine session every evening.

picklemewalnuts · 16/02/2023 07:29

I'm in the same place. Lost 5.5 stone, kept it off for a year. It's creeping back on despite everything. Christmas broke me

BountyGalaxyTwixKitkat · 16/02/2023 07:43

I think the secret is to make friends with feeling hungry and feel hungry everyday. Slim people just do not eat like we eat.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 16/02/2023 07:53

Put on 3kg during a week's holiday last month. It was so easy! 3-course meals and way more booze than I usually have. My clothes were pinching around my gut, so this week have finally felt mentally ready to get rid of it.
Reducing carbs big time (pastries/bread) although having porridge (with raspberries/blueberries) as it sustains me until lunchtime.
Yesterday I had an avocado and boiled egg for lunch and chicken/veg soup for dinner, followed by melon.
Woke this morning and didn't feel hungry.

This is why dieting doesn't work. You need to make healthy, permanent lifestyle choices, aka a consistent healthy diet. Very hard to do but it's the only way!

In my case that seems to mean no bread or butter ever.

I've made some permanent adjustments, but find it hard to be without various treats or basics on a permanent basis.

TransportedCarla · 16/02/2023 10:28

I am resigned to not eating bread ever again. Booze has to be only special occasions, like less than once a month. I am proof you don’t need to have a sweet tooth to be overweight, I look like I love a pudding but literally never eat them. It’s all about the crisps and second helpings of dinner. I am in my 50s.

picklemewalnuts · 16/02/2023 13:24

I'm resigned to booze... bread crisps and chocolate are my downfall. Apparently I can't have them in the house.
