How to calculate how many calories per day

What tool do people use to calculate daily calories needed? I would like to lose around half a stone but more importantly I want to improve my nutrition as I’ve not been eating very well last few months over winter. I’ve signed up to my fitness pal so I can be more aware of what I’m eating but I’m not sure if the daily calories set is right. I’ve looked at other online sites but all seem to suggest different numbers so I’m not sure what to aim for.
Can anyone help please?

I use myfitnesspal and I find it far more user friendly and accurate and wide ranging than other sites

But you have to measure everything you eat (weight only) and do it per 100g. Then find the corresponding item in the menu. Dont rely on what someone else has entered check the packaging of your item and make sure it corresponds to what you pick on the menu on MFP,, then put in how much you had 1.2 or .7 for example for 120g or 70g or whatever

Dont use anything 'per serving', dont use cups, dont use american items, dont use 'home made' servings or anything like that on the site.

Following with interest. I've massively cut back on what I eat, and I'm not seeing any results, which is making it hard to stick to.

Try a TDEE calculator. I find it helpful. This is the one I use: www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/.

I don't know if perhaps I should have explained, but such a calculator will work out the total number of calories you expend. It's based on your weight, height, age, and how physically active you typically are. You can also input how much you'd like to lose and it will tell you what deficit to aim for. It's a very good starting point, I think, for working out roughly how many calories you need to consume, around which you can base your actual diet.

A person enters their height in inches, weight in pounds, and age in years to determine their BMR, In the calculations below:
For men: 66 + (6.2 x weight) + (12.7 x height) – (6.76 x age)
For women: 655.1 + (4.35 x weight) + (4.7 x height) – (4.7 x age)

If you are prepared to spend a bit of money on an app and are prepared then to track your food and weigh yourself at least once a week (but ideally every day) then the Macrofactor app will be very useful to you. It will work out what you actually expend, based on your intake and your weight. You do not need to faff around estimating exercise calories.
