So, I've buried my head in the sand for a while about my weight.

In Feb 2020 I was 11stone6. Now 3 years later and 3 stone heavier. I've put on a stone in the last 9 months.

I'm so very tired. I have a few underlying health conditions and my consultant has basically told me to lose weight 😱

My BMI is 39. I'm so embarrassed. I'm snugly in a size 20. Pre lockdown I was a 14-16.

I've tried slimming world but can't stick to it and find it hard to have the headspace for it.

I'm going the gp next week to ask about saxenda.

I take the DC swimming every week and today I did 10 lengths without stopping which I'm so proud of. Normally I just bob around playing with DC.

Don't even know why I'm writing this, I need to get my head into gear. My consultant literally said my health is at risk due to my weight so why the fuck did I come home and eat sweets. FFS.

I need to change but it's so hard and I can't imagine being a healthy weight. Although to be honest id take "overweight" rather than "obese"

There is a section on here called Weight Loss Chat with various threads running on there for being trying to loose weight.

If you want some online support please have a read of the various threads to see if one would be a good fit for you or start you own. There are people doing one meal a day and a different group using injections and others where everyone is doing it their own way. We are all on that board to loose weight. I find it useful to get encouragement and to diarise everything and it makes me accountable as I post daily.

Lots of people are very passionate about what they find works for them, but I believe the main thing is finding what you can stick too in the long term. Many people will diet for a few weeks and give up or loose weight and go back to their old habits and put it back on.

If you are looking to start exercising, it might be worth looking at walking workouts on YouTube. Maybe start with Get Fit with Rick, there are ones from 1500 steps to 10k and all to great music. You can do them at home and get dc to dance along if needed.

It also might be worth getting your husband fully onboard and cutting down on the treat food in the house and meal planning.

Sorry just seen you posted it on the weight loss chat bit. I saw this in the trending section and normally those chats don’t feature on there

I have lost 2.5 stone this year with slimming world. I had to find a meeting I really liked and stay every week without fail - it really makes all the difference when it comes to ideas of what to do. I think there are online groups you could use for support if you prefer - my group are so happy for each other when we have done well, it really helps. It does help to have somewhere I have to go each week - not going is non negotiable for me. I set small goals- lose a pound, get to this weight, fit into this thing in a smaller size.... I also write down everything I eat. it really helps to keep track of what I am eating. I have a treat day once a week. I know that is controversial, but it has really helped me because if I have a craving for fish and chips, I can eat sensibly most days and know I can have them on treat day. I also stopped thinking about the negative aspects of weight loss - I focussed on the positive - like how great it will be to buy a size 14 again, or fit into a favourite dress I havent worn for a while, or be able to cut my toenails without my stomach getting in the way. Good luck to you. It is possible, but it is not easy.

It's great that you have confidence in yourself and there is no reason for you to lose that.
You mention snacking on your DS's snacks. I think the first little step to take is to get rid of the sweet stuff. What helped me is that I cannot stand coconut flavoured things. The rest of the family is quite keen on coconut. We aren't massive snackers anyway but for a while I would deliberately buy things that I don't like in order not to eat them. Then you get out of the habit of eating the sugar. What do you not like?

What are you doing to sort out the plantar fasciitis? It is really important that you take the right steps to sort that out too or else you might rely on that as an excuse to not be active (not saying its not a legitimate excuse but that you need to remove obstacles).

One of the most important things you can do is to learn about nutrition, start taking up an interest in cooking, get your children involved so they learn how to cook healthy food. Knowledge is power when it comes to food and you need to be careful not to rely on diet foods, low-fat foods and trends which will be horrible for your health overall.

Books that have helped me learn about food are:

  1. The obesity Code: Jason Fung
  2. How to Not Die: Michael Gregor
  3. The Longevity Plan: Dr. John Day (highly recommend this)

Podcasts that really helped me:

  1. Feel better, Live more: Dr. Chatterjee
  2. Eating ourselves to death (episode on Honestly podcast)

Youtube:

  1. (I eat a version of this for lunch almost everyday. I am breastfeeding so I do add in a bit of grain for extra calories but I am trying to get to a lunch that contains as many veggies as possible).

I could share a ton more information but I don't want to overwhelm you. But what is important to remember is that this is about losing weight BUT it's also about so much more. It's about overall health, teaching your children about health, it's about disease prevention and its about thriving in your life.

I would get your metabolic health dialed in with diet and start by walking everyday, swimming is great and get your children outside walking with you.

I am also needing to lose weight for my health- I picked 4 stone on in last 3 years and it's given me some health issues. I've only actually lost 12 lbs since early November despite being super sensible, no sugar , no cake, no biscuits and a lot less alcohol-far more protein and whole grains etc but I struggle to lose it on the scales. Strange thing is I can see I've lost weight on weeks even when I haven't on the scales and can tell by my clothes! Most odd. I'm also on beta blockers and they slow your metabolism down making it even harder

AdventFridgeOfShame · 28/01/2023 20:09

Read all your posts back. You are almost in the right head space.

More swimming and stopping pinching your DS's lunch box snacks are great tactics.

The only scientifically prove diet is the Mediterranean diet. Read up on it and think about how it would fit with your life. No medicine or processed diet food will work as a magic bullet. You have to be prepared to change the way you eat for life.

Keep a brutally honest food diary for a week or two. Weigh a few things (my mash portions are epic). You don't have to show it to anyone, just be honest with yourself.

All of this advice is good but really just think one step at a time and start with small changes, you know you can make.

A small goal might be adding one extra fruit / veg at each meal. The fibre fills you up so you won't feel like eating as much junk.

10000 steps is a lot of you're not used to it, so aim for walking 15 minutes extra per day.

Once you've nailed these goals add more in. I've been overweight and it's miserable. I lost it at 20 and have been the same weight now for 26 years.

Thanks for all the replies didn't expect so many! Ok so after dinner I'd usually have something like a packet of crisps or sweets or one of the DC lunchbox snacks and tonight I've had an orange 😀. Filled the sugar craving anyway. But God this is going to be hard

Beetroot seems to crave my sweet craving. I have the one in vinegar and apparently it's really good for you too.

IDontCareMatthew · 28/01/2023 21:16

You want saxenda ( worked well for me) then you will need to pay for it

Gp won't prescribe it I'm afraid

Tippletoomany · 28/01/2023 21:37

My genuine advice is just to do something really small. If you’re eating 3000 calories a day, find a way to cut out just 100 calories. And i’m regards to exercise, don’t try and do loads all at once. Set yourself a goal to do 10 minutes more than you do now, twice a week. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is just do it REALLY slowly. don’t try and do everything all at once or you will fail. Try adding foods into your diet rather than taking away such as adding more veg, fruit, legumes, grains, etc… Don’t try and change everything in one go, you set yourself up for failure before you’ve even started.
