Which vegetables help weight loss

Lovetolosepounds · 24/01/2023 11:29

I am only interested in vegetables as I am allergic to pretty much all fruit (a rare autoimmune disease).

I need to up my veg intake, in all meals. Looking for all those that keep you fuller for longer.

I could also do with some snack ideas for cooked veg (maybe in an oats bar).

docs has suggested a dietician to assist but then found out the waiting list to see him is over two months

if anyone can suggest books or websites etc I would be hugely grateful as I am massively depressed about where I am at, discussion with my doctor today would seem that I haven’t a clue about food and weight loss and I thought I was actually on the right track. My recently diagnosed autoimmune disease has thrown previously successful dieting methods literally out the window.

What are you eating at the moment? I would say that most vegetables are low in calories and high in bulk. They help to lose weight, as you can fill your plate with them instead of densely calorific items. They obviously also provide lots of nutrients etc. But it's really hard to advise without knowing what you like/currently eat/why you need to loose weight.

Basic heathy low calorie meals might be along the lines of:
Salmon, broccoli, green beans, brown rice
Chicken breast, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, beetroot, sweetcorn
Vegetable stir fry with tofu or halloumi.

MagpiePi · 24/01/2023 11:38

Probably just aim to eat as wide a variety as possible- ‘eat the rainbow’ as they say.

Could you be referred to a dietician or nutritionist?

pizzaHeart · 24/01/2023 11:39

I think it depends how you we eating them but in general: green salad, cucumber, celery are very low in calories so basically just fill you up.
Sweet potatoes, parsnip, carrots and beetroot are good for carbs.

Thank you for replying. I am borderline obese, my knees hurt and I know if I lose weight they will be better and I generally hate my current size. I don’t drink alcohol, I know I ate far too much chocolate and crap over Christmas but it’s been piling on the last three years. Due to a family members health we don’t go out much so exercise is very limited to what it was pre Covid.

I mainly eat lean meat (chicken, lamb, pork, steak) and two veg (or three or four veg). I try to limit potatoes, I eat, carrots, broccoli, peas, green beans, mushrooms, cauliflower, peppers, Brussels, cabbage, swede, celeriac, parsnips, red onion, spring onion.

i probably don’t eat enough salad mainly because I don’t find it filling but I do make a chunky coleslaw of white cabbage, carrot, spring onions, red onions about once a week and add a small amount of low fat dressing. I always cut the fat off meat before I cook it. I try to limit bread.

once a week I do a massive stir fry and include lots of the above and have tinned bean shoots and water chestnuts.

i want to try and boost the foods that help the most, ie are carrots better than say parsnips, someone told me to eat peas with every meal.

Rather than focusing on regular portions of a specific list of veg, I'd focus on variety and cooking them in different ways so that you don't get bored rather than just always as a steamed/boiled accompaniment.

I'd ditch any low fat products that have sweeteners or are filled out with gums/thickeners as they're bad for digestion and won't have any protein.

Try to focus on eating real food - the things you could buy if the only shops you had available was a butchers, fishmonger and greengrocer for example.

Plenty of chicken/turkey and fish. Other meat less often.

We enjoy things like:

roasted Mediterranean veg with onions, courgettes, garlic and tomatoes and a small amount of olive oil. Roasted on a high heat and then add fillets of white fish to the tray for the last 15 minutes

Root vegetable curry with cumin roasted cauliflower. Served with brown rice and plain yoghurt with coriander stirred through it

Butternut squash roasted with garlic and chili flakes then mixed with bone broth and blended to make soup

Mushroom omelette with a big salad

When we have a more traditional meat plus veg meal I always do at least three different veg

Broccoli is a really good vegetable to eat a lot of, as well as kale, if you have auto-immune disease.

Personally I find I benefit from eating pickles - beetroot, gherkins, capers, peppers etc. They help to steady my gut (whole other story) and my blood glucose & BP. And I use the pickle vinegar in cooking, i.e. might add to a sauce made of tinned tomatoes or the spicy jalepeno liquid to a stir-fry.

And I eat a lot of olives as snack (green and black) and add them to cooking as well. Ditto a few cashews.

I also like artichokes and asparagus (fresh or from cans or jars), and aubergines and courgettes roasted.

I use kefir (a kind of probiotic live yogurt) as a sauce or dressing.

The only bread I find I can tolerate these days in toasted sourdough (rye or seeded) in small amounts, i.e. low in gluten. I like beans on toast or mushrooms on toast.

Best of luck Flowers

Is your autoimmune condition thyroid related OP? If so you will need to steer clear of certain brassicas.

WeirdPookah · 24/01/2023 12:48

Juicing will not help you lose weight.

It's a bunch of calories without the fibre and bulk that will keep you fuller. Yes it has nutrients, but it will not fill you up at all.

Try looking what it is in season, what is on offer this week to try new things.

A meal we love that is so easy is a bunch of evenly chopped veg in a pyrex dish (easier clean up, no oil needed) with different seasonings to ring the changes, and serve with a protein of choice.
(mix of things like peppers, courgettes, fine sliced onion, tomatoes, butternut, parsnips, sprouts, spring onions, small mushrooms)

Remember that legumes count as one of the 10 a day servings you should be aiming for. Chickpeas in the above mentioned tray bake are delicious. They are also filling.

SnoozyLucy7 · 24/01/2023 13:04

Also you need good fats in you diet, to keep you healthy and fuller for longer. Always include things like Olive oil, variety of nuts, avocados, oily fish, eggs etc in your diet. These will keep you sated for longer.

And do eat some potatoes. They are full of fibre, nutrients and vitamins, and they are cheap. Obviously, if you only fry or roast them, they will lose all of their nutritional value. So boiled, mashed or as jacket potatoes.

Stay away things that are labled as “low fat” or “diet”, because these are filled with horrible and unhealthy ingredients. And keep away from diet drinks. The artificial sweeteners badly mess with you body. Just drinks lots of water and get into juicing, if you can. Just try and eat as much unprocessed food as you can.

When you say that after talking to your doctor, it seems you haven’t got a clue about food and weigh loss, what exactly do you mean? Did the doctor give you advice about the types of food you’re eating, or just that you’re not eating healthily enough based on your current weight?

Could you give examples of dinners you eat? You say you eat lean meat like lamb, pork and steak, but how are you preparing them? I wouldn’t necessarily consider them the best examples of lean meat. I would think chicken, turkey, very lean mince. If you’re having a steak and cooking it in loads of butter, for example, that won’t really help with weight loss.

Also might help to keep a food diary, apps like My Fitness Pal are great. You’ll need to weigh out your portions, because again, saying you make a ‘massive stir fry’ - do you just mean that you have a wide variety of veg? If you’re having a massive bowl full, with lashings of soy sauce and cooked in loads of oil, might be lots more calories than you think.

What’s a typical breakfast like, and what kinds of snacks do you have?

amyboo · 24/01/2023 14:04

DH bought me one pot, pn, planet for Christmas, as we're both trying to eat veggie or vegan 2-3 dinners a week and find tasty meals for leftover lunches. We've tried a couple of things from there so far and they're delicious and perfect for leftover lunches the next day. Today we finished up last nights' dinner of sweet potato, squash and coconut stew. Nom nom nom

Can you say a little more, @OwwwMuuuum please? I've not heard of this, and I thought I'd read everything going about auto-immune - clearly not! Thanks.

Lovetolosepounds · 24/01/2023 15:45

Thank you everyone. I wrote a long reply and decided to not post it as I realised it would be outing discussing my life, my very rare autoimmune disease (not thyroid) and the day to day shielding life I still have to lead.

I am going to up the water,, go for a brisk walk on my own, I think exercise is seriously lacking, portion control needs addressing, I think I’m depressed with life in general which is obviously not helping, your messages made me realise I know what I should be doing, I am doing a lot of it, but possibly not very well.
I’ve got a food diary so I’ll get that out again, and I think I’ll try my old slimming club again, I’d discounted it because I can’t eat a lot of the recipes and the size of group meetings, I think I’ll look for a quiet one and wear a mask and see if the group leader can help me where I’m struggling. Thank you.
