Started my diet today. I need to. My weight has crept up and up and now I’m huge. I need to lose weight for my health, my kids and my self worth. But I hate it, I hate every second of it. I’m not even being that strict, and I’m probably not hungry, but I’m so depressed. How do I get into it mentally?

What is the diet? Is it that you're eating food you don't particularly like?

WhinnieThePoohHead · 16/01/2023 18:38

I’m just doing calorie control so I can eat food I like? But I’m obsessed with food and planning what I’m going to have and when I’ll eat etc so this is awfil

Drink water
drink diet coke
have chocolate protein puddings with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries.
fill up on high protein to keep you feeling full
inclide plenry of fruit and veg.
you don’t need to cut out carbs.

At first calorie and macro counting on MFP is hard. After a while it gets easier. Make sure to count your macros as well. After a while you know what foods you like and can eat and hit your calories and macros and can just log it. I would also recommend logging food the day before or a few days before in MFP so that it hits your calories and macros. That way you don’t have to spend time deciding on the day.

Watchkeys · 16/01/2023 18:59

Quit flour and sugar for 3 days. Just 3 days. Forget how you feel; you'll feel like crap, because you're forcing your body to break an addiction. See how you feel on Friday. Better, I'd imagine.

TwilightSkies · 16/01/2023 19:01

You don’t sound like you’re in the right frame of mind to be doing a diet.
Whats the rest of your life like? Work? Hobbies? Relationship? Stress levels?

Oh, yes, I know that feeling! I found I was on the edge of being obsessed with planning out what I was going to eat that day, but the planning itself is good, I think. It means I know I'm going to meet whatever calorie/macro/vegetables targets I've set, and I know I'm going to have enough food. I mean, I know if I get hungry I can eat between meals because I've already built in snacks.

Do you have enough water throughout the day? And do you allow yourself a snack? Is it possible you have set your calorie limit too low?

LynetteScavo · 16/01/2023 19:10

Hmm, only one day in?

I think you should detox rather than diet. Detox is painful - no Diet Coke!!!! Or sugar. You will cry on day two because your body wants sugar. And probably day three and four you will think you are going mad. But after a week of no sugar or alcohol you can then start to calorie count and won't fell like actually killing some.

If you're still alive after a week of no sugar there is hope.....

BigBangSmallBang · 16/01/2023 19:18

I don’t agree with a lot of the advice here. There is no point giving up sugar unless that is something you can do for the rest of your life. Give it up to lose weight and you will regain all plus some extra when you go back to your old eating habits.
I think you just need to get used to calorie counting. It gets easier and it isn’t a bad thing if you are a bit obsessed for a couple of weeks. I also like 16:8 fasting as I find I don’t get hungry till I start eating, so I fast till 2pm each day.

Inkpotlover · 16/01/2023 19:26

You need to come up with a plan that is yours, that suits you and your lifestyle, because it sounds like calorie counting triggers obsessiveness. I took a long, hard look at my diet and realised it wasn't massively unhealthy, with quite a few cooked-from-scratch meals, I just ate too much! So I've invested in a portion control plate and it's really working. I still have the foods I like, but a lot less.

Sorry, meant to say, because I use the plate, I don't have to weigh or measure, I just serve up what fits in the section. It takes away the obsessing over 'how much'.

Watchkeys · 16/01/2023 19:31

I think that maybe the inability to cope with a certain level of discomfort even for a short period might be at the root of this. Changing habits is hard for a while. Changing diet is hard for a while. Maybe try it for the first hour of the day today, first 2 hours of tomorrow, and build up your stamina for the discomfort? Within a fortnight you'll be doing the whole day, and will have eased yourself in at the shallow end. It's taken a long time to put the weight on. A couple of extra weeks taking it off is nothing, really, and it might smooth your path a little.

yes that is a portion control / calorie control of sorts just a different and less accurate way of going about it.

Your body detoxes naturally by itself.

Yes changing habits is hard. If it were easy then everyone would have a superfit body.

Eliminating whole food groups or food you like unless prepared to give them up for rest of life need to have a way of controlling the portions you eat and not wanting to finish the whole packet etc.

Watchkeys · 16/01/2023 20:19

Simply not true. You can stop the wild addiction and cravings, and return to indulging, but in a far more controlled way. I know this because I've done it, and seen many of my clients do it. It's almost impossible to avoid sugar altogether in our culture, but learning to say no, and breaking the physical addiction, is very worthwhile.

Hedjwitch · 16/01/2023 20:28

Ditch the diet and the calorie counting. Try and figure out why you have gained so much weight and what triggers over eating. Address that first.
Add in a little gentle exercise round the house, short walks,a few bends and stretches. Just be a little more active than usual.
Cut down - not out- on snacks. Normally have two biscuits? Just have one.
Go for slightly smaller portions with more veg.
Drink an extra glass of water each day.

Be kind to yourself.

Noicant · 16/01/2023 20:39

Have you cut calories quite drastically? Maybe try adding things instead so it feels a bit more positive, say a protein goal, a veg goal and a piece of fruit. I find protein really helps. Also build something you like in every week. So if your cal goal is 1500, try 1400 for 6 days then on the 7th you get 2100 in total, glass of wine etc on a friday night.

WhinnieThePoohHead · 16/01/2023 20:39

Thanks for all the help and advice

I can’t give up sugar, I’ll go crazy or just stop trying if I can’t have sugar, it is definitely one of my big issues! I don’t drink alcohol so giving that up isn’t going to work either 😁

another issue I have is portion control, that’s why I thought calorie counting would help, it’s reducing the size of the meals I’m cooking, but I’m bulking them up with things like vegetables and lettuce?

Noicant · 16/01/2023 20:41

Honestly I’ve found pushing my protein up is the only way to reduce appetite for me. I can’t get full with extra veg tbh, I’ll be full for 20 minutes then hungry again. I’m aiming for 1.6g per kg.

One of the biggest issues for me is that whole getting obsessed with food thing.

can you do a week food plan and just repeat it?

LynetteScavo · 16/01/2023 20:46

@S70V12 - of course your body naturally detoxes by itself, but if you consume Diet Coke and sugar, alcohol etc, your body will never get the chance to get them out of your system and you'll still crave them.

If you stop consuming them, after a few days your body will adjust and you will no longer cry because you feel you need sugar.

Just calorie counting but still consuming diet drinks and refined sugar, but not lots of healthy foods isn't the answer, IMO.

The problem with calorie counting is that it can trigger obsessive behaviour and it turns eating into a chore of measuring and weighing. The fact that you're already fed up after a day suggests it's not the best method for you. I've been using this plate for a few weeks and it's transforming how I eat. I'm cutting calories but I'm not counting or measuring, I'm just dolloping on food that fits each section!

Can you see how this sounds like an addict talking?
