How to start a diet

It sounds like a daft question - how to start a diet. I'm 2 stone overweight. I know it's not good for my health and I hate being fat and wearing cover up clothes. But i don't know how to make a start on it I've started diets and given up after two days. I'm scared of falling off the wagon again.

How do I eat less? Do I count calories, join a club., cut out foods

help me get going and keep going

There are a lot of different diets but ultimately it will be the one you can stick to.

Most come down to a formula of your current weight in pounds x 100 is how many calories eg 10 stone is 140 pounds = 1400 calories.

You buy the book/sign up.
Go through the recipes and decide what you like.
Make a list of the ingredients.
Make a simple plan of what you are going to eat each day.
Go shopping and get the food in.
Start.
Track what you eat - My fitness pal is a good app.
Repeat.

I have signed up to The Six Pack Reveloution which is 10 weeks starting on 9 Jan. They tell you what to eat and what to do for exercise at home. Plus you are part of a Facebook group for the social element. It is a transformation challenge and so it does take a big mental commitment. But I like it for the structure.

For me clearing out the cupboards is important, get rid of whatever is your downfall (wine and crisps are mine), then meal planning and follow through with a healthy grocery shop. If it isn’t in the house you can’t eat it. Try to see your new regime as a positive, something you are excited about rather than a horrible trial. Have a dress or pair of jeans you want to fit in again or something to aim for.

A big issue for me with diets has always been not planning ahead for making the right, healthy meals. I would then just use this as an excuse and eat whatever (rubbish) food was in the fridge / cupboards.
This time, I've joined Weight Watchers (just the digital one, I'm not interested in going to meetings etc). They have an app with lots of recipes and points values so I've planned out the next 4/5 days of meals and done a shop based on the recipe ingredients. I now have no excuse not to eat healthy as everything is there, ready to be prepared!
You could search for some healthy recipes online if you don't want to join a plan and just start there.
Also I hate going to the gym and running but I've started doing yoga and bought a skipping rope that I actually enjoy so it doesn't feel like much of a chore and won't give up as easy!
I'm not a drinker so that doesn't bother me but my husband has ditched his cans of lager for some gin, for when he wants a drink so he's prepared for a weekend tipple.
Good luck and hope it goes well for you Smile

Plan ahead. Eat well (nutrient dense foods with plenty of protein and veg) in moderate portions. Don't cut stuff out but control portions of less nutrient dense foods

Make a pledge to make every single meal at home (apart from one a week). Do not allow yourself to buy anything from a packet - nothing processed. Just simple, whole ingredients.

Plan out 3-4 days ahead, and buy just those ingredients. It's ok if you eat a lot to start with, volume eating lean protein like chicken and veg like brocolli and green beans is completely fine!

Reduce complex carbs waaaay back, little in moderation is ok. Pasta, bread etc.

Reduce sugar. No fizzy drinks, limited sweet snacks. No fruit juice.

This is the only long-term sustainable way. 'Diets' do not work.
